Biz Buzz: Local Business News for April 17th
By Marshel Couso
Welcome to our weekly feature dedicated to covering Susanville and Lassen County’s business scene! Grand openings, new employees, renovations, new hours… each week we’ll keep you up to date with important information about the businesses you rely on.
Susanville Supermarket IGA
| | | On April 6th, Susanville Supermarket IGA celebrated the anniversary of long-time employee Debbie Oschner. Oschner has now been with Susanville Supermarket for an impressive thirty-two years. | | |
Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?
Create a great offer by adding words like "free," "personalized," "complimentary," or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take action, so consider inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
Rick Stewart, the store’s previous owner says, “Congratulations Debbie, you were one of our very best hires. So glad you chose to come work with us all those years ago!”
Jessica Miller, current owner of IGA, told us, “What they say is true, when you’ve been around someone long enough, they become family, and after working together for 15 years, that’s exactly what she is.”
| |
If you swing by IGA for an early morning donut, make sure you wish Oschner a happy anniversary.

Celebrating National Public Safety Telecommunications Week
This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and Lassen County Sheriff John McGarva took time this week to thank the dispatchers who work in the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office 9-1-1 center, the Susanville Area CHP Dispatch Center and the Susanville Interagency Fire Center, providing critical services to people in our region.
“Public Safety Dispatchers are the first to help those in need,” explains Sheriff McGarva. “Whether it is law enforcement, fire or medical, they are the ones who triage the calls to get the right services where they are needed.”
| | | “They work in a high-stress environment with a very intensive workload. My dispatchers do an amazing job for the citizens of Lassen County and we are lucky to have such dedicated and professional people working hard for us.” | | |
Lassen County’s public safety team includes Lead Dispatchers Angela Lewis and Yvette Proffer, Dispatchers Tracy Mattern, Phylicia Hinze-Buff, Jeris Stevens, Sarah Anderson and Trysta Spangle.
National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week was established in recognition of this special group of people who show care and compassion while performing very challenging duties.

Susanville Votes for Annexation
Big Territory Added to City
April 17, 1947
By a margin of more than two to one, residents of five Susanville additions voted themselves into the city in a special election here Tuesday.
The move increased Susanville’s population from slightly more than 1,500 to an estimated 7,500 and swelled the city’s area by more than 200 percent.
Of the 626 ballots cast, 435 were in favor of the unification and 191 were opposed. Only residents of the five affected additions were allowed to vote. The ballot was less than 50 percent of the registration list of 1,400.
Additions now within the city limits as a result of the election are East Milwood, Arnold, Richmond and Fruit Growers hill.
Main Street, the principal thoroughfare, now runs for more than a mile in the city limits. It previously ran only a few blocks within the official boundaries of the town.
The lumber mill section, which includes its own residences, was not included in the annexation move.
Among other things, the unification is expected to make the administration of schools here easier, with all elementary schools now within the city limits. Two of the largest previously were beyond the boundaries of the town.
The special election was called by the city council after petitions requesting it had been filed with the city clerk and received no protest.
