Why We Love This Place
Wednesday: Remington

Remington, my sweet little ninja neighbor.
Every week, I get to share stories about the people and moments that make Susanville such a special place to call home, and this week, I wanted to shine a light on a young neighbor of mine – Remington, though everyone calls him Remi.
Remi, who is only 12, is the kind of person who reminds you how much potential and positivity there is in the kids in our community.

I first met Remi not over the backyard fence, but at last year’s Grappling Bear Jiu Jitsu Camp. While the camp is open to beginners – in his age group almost of the kids there had already been training for quite some time. Jiu Jitsu can be the kind of environment that could easily intimidate someone new. But not Remi.
From day one, he jumped right in.
He listened, learned, and rolled with the more experienced students without hesitation. There was no sign of nerves or self-doubt—just a genuine eagerness to learn and a quiet confidence.
What really stands out to me about Remi is how quickly he picks things up. He asks smart questions, and is never afraid to try something new, even if he doesn’t get it perfect the first time. More than once during the camp, I caught myself forgetting that Remi was brand new to jiu jitsu. He blended in so well that it was easy to assume he’d been training for months.
During one exercise at camp, I sent the older kids – including Remi – to do a rolling drill from a standing position. Halfway through, I had an “uh-oh” moment and shrieked, “Remi, I am so sorry! I forgot you don’t know this one yet!” Remi just grinned, shrugged like it was no big deal, and said, “Nah, I think I got it.” Then, with all the confidence in the world, he launched himself down the mat with the rest of the group – rolling like he’d been doing it since kindergarten.
Moreover, whenever a new little kid shows up for jiu jitsu, they’re usually a bundle of nerves—shy, quiet, and clinging to the edge of the mat. That’s when I bring in their “big jiu jitsu buddy,” and honestly, Remi is almost always the first to step up.
I know people sometimes say teenage boys can’t be gentle or patient with little kids, but Remi is living proof that’s just not true. He’s got this easygoing way with the younger ones, and he makes them laugh, shows them the ropes, and somehow manages to make them feel like they belong right away. Watching him with the little kids always makes me smile, and it’s a good reminder that kindness and patience aren’t limited by age.
What I love about this kid – he’s humble, never the loudest in the room (unless you count his laugh), and honestly one of the hardest working kids I’ve ever seen. I’ll watch him dragging himself off the mat, looking like he just finished wrestling a bear, and then – sure enough – if another student wants a match, Remi’s right back up, volunteering.
Remi is one of my favorite students and clearly one of the reasons I love where we live.

McKinley Kindergarten Round-Up

TK and Kindergarten Round-up is just around the corner at McKinley School! Parents and students are invited to an afternoon where they can meet staff, enjoy learning activities, and learn about McKinley’s extensive offering of programs and educational activities.

Registration for McKinley School’s Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten for the 2025-2026 school year will be held Thursday, May 15th, from 4:00 until 6:00p.m., in the school’s parking lot.
Transitional Kindergarten registrants must turn 4-years by September 1st, 2025, and Kindergarten registrants must be 5-years old by September 1st, 2025.
Come learn all about McKinley School and meet the TK and Kindergarten teachers.
Plese bring your students’ birth certificate and immunization record.
The first day of school in the fall will be August 16th.

Get Ready to Swim! Honey Lake Valley Community Pool Announces Upcoming Schedule
The Honey Lake Valley Community Pool is gearing up for a splashing good season! Mark your calendars for upcoming sign-up dates and the pool opening:
Waterbaby Sign Ups: If you have a little one eager to get in the water, sign-ups for the Waterbaby class will begin on Monday, May 5th at the pool. Doors will open at 9:00a.m., so don’t miss out!

Evening Lesson Sign Ups: For those interested in evening swim lessons, sign-ups will take place on Tuesday, May 6th at the pool, with doors opening at 9:00a.m.
Morning Lesson Sign Ups: Prefer a morning dip? Sign up for morning swim lessons on Wednesday, May 7th at the pool. Doors will open at 9:00a.m.
Spring Season Pool Opening: Get ready to jump in! The Honey Lake Valley Community Pool will open for the spring season on Monday, May 19th. Public swim will be available on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:30p.m. to 3:30p.m. The pool will also be available for rental.
Summer Season Kick-Off: The summer season officially begins on Monday, June 9th! Swim lessons will start, and public swim will be offered Monday through Sunday, along with Teen Tuesdays and Family Fridays.

Susanville School District Presents
“Kids Summer Adventures”!
Get ready for a summer filled with fun and creative learning! The Susanville School District has announced its “Kids Summer Adventures” program, offering expanded learning opportunities for all current Susanville School District students in Transitional Kindergarten through 6th grade.
This exciting program runs from June 9th to June 27th and again from July 28th to August 19th, with daily sessions from 7:45a.m. to 5:15p.m. Breakfast, lunch, and a snack will be provided each day.
Participants can look forward to a variety of themed adventures, including:

Lassen High News and Information
for Parents and Students
Did you miss the Lassen County Arts Council High School opening reception? If so, it’s not too late to go to the gallery and see the artwork. The art will still be on display through Friday, May 2nd.
The gallery is located at 807 Cottage Street in uptown Susanville. The gallery is open Thursdays and Fridays from 4:00 to 7:00pm, and Saturdays from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Stop in to see the fabulous artworks before the show ends.
Seniors Going on Senior Trip – Please swing by Mrs. Vincent’s room and give her your sandwich order for lunch at the Boardwalk.

The Senior Prom will be held May 10th, at Sentimental Journey from 8:00 to 11:00p.m.
Who will be our next Miss Lassen County? Applications are now available for all Junior and Senior girls. Please see Mrs. Bennett in Room 115 for an application. Deadline is May 23rd.
Girls Basketball Open Gyms are on Tuesdays from 5:00 to 6:30p.m. and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:00p.m.

Lassen Theater Location Chosen
April 23, 1950
Site of the new drive-in theater was announced today by Lee Zwiebel, local manager of the T & D Enterprises owner of Susanville Sierra theater, and builder of the new drive-in.
The drive-in will be at Johnstonville five miles east of Susanville. Surveying of grades are underway by Walter Grimes civil engineer of Chico.
Joseph McFadden and Son will be supervising contractor for the job. They expect to subcontract nearly all the work to local firms.
Ed Topham T & D construction engineers from San Francisco headquarters of the theater company was in Susanville Saturday and put his ok on the Johnstonville site.
