Adopt A Pet from the Lassen County Animal Shelter – Miss Piggy and Mr. Spock
Hi there, humans. We’re Miss Piggy and Mr. Spock, a dynamic duo of senior Chihuahuas with stories to tell and love to give.
I’m Miss Piggy (yes, that Miss Piggy), small in size, big in sass, and unapologetically food-obsessed. If there’s a snack within a 10-mile radius, I will find it. I enjoy short walks and curling up under a pile of blankets for long naps.
And I’m Mr. Spock, logical by name, legendary ears by fame. They say I could probably pick up satellite signals with these things. I’m a thinker, a snuggler, and the more refined of the two (someone’s got to keep Miss Piggy in check).

Despite our ‘senior’ status, we’ve still got pep in our step and tails that wag like there’s no tomorrow. We’ve got personality for days and are looking for forever homes where we can retire in style in cozy beds, warm laps, and LOTS of tasty treats would be lovely, thank you very much.
We promise to make you laugh, keep you company, and fill your home with love and little snores. Adopt us (together or separately, we don’t mind either way), and you won’t just gain two dogs — you’ll gain two legends.
Xoxo, Piggy & Spock

Honey Lake Hospice Announces Winner of $2,000 Scholarship
Honey Lake Hospice has announced the recipient of the Marge Dunlavy Memorial Scholarship for 2025. This scholarship is awarded annually to the most deserving applicant pursuing a degree in a health-related field with a special interest in gerontology, oncology or hospice and palliative care.
This year the $2,000 award is being given to Habiba Darwish. Habiba is currently an undergraduate student at California State University, Sacramento, majoring in Health Science with a pre-nursing focus.
Her long-term goal is to become a nurse practitioner specializing in trauma or palliative care.
In addition to her classes, Habiba is a volunteer at a doctor’s clinic in Folsom and has been able to use her bilingual skills to facilitate communication between patient and doctor. She also works part time at Jack’s Urban Eats.
Habiba’s instructors and employer all stress her positive attitude, interpersonal skills and friendly personality.

They state she takes the initiative and is always willing to assist and guide her peers. “She is kind, considerate, adaptable and respectful.”
In many current war zones across the globe there are health care workers laboring in devastating conditions. Some have no anesthesia for amputations and are treating mass casualties with limited resources. This deeply impacted her. “Their courage fuels my desire to pursue a career in health care” she says.
Providing compassionate and effective medical care to those in need she sees as “a calling – a way to alleviate suffering and restore dignity.”
Her commitment to service is also shown in leadership roles. She has received multiple accolades recognizing her dedication to community service. From the Associated Students Inc. (ASI), the Student Success Scholarship; and from the Counsel on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the Youth Leadership and Service Award.
In her position as a mental health ambassador with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) she developed initiatives to support student well-being stating, “I believe mental health is just as vital as physical health.” Advocating for awareness and humanitarian aid as a board member of Students for Justice in Palestine she believes knowledge and empathy can drive meaningful change.
Habiba not only balances work, volunteering and school, she also crafts and sells handmade jewelry using her creativity as another means to support her education while maintaining a weighted GPA of 4.0.
Honey Lake Hospice is honored to be able to assist Habiba Darwish in her chosen career. As an all volunteer organization Honey Lake Hospice has been providing services to our community since 2004. It is dedicated to offering end-of-life support with a program of flexible services providing compassionate and supportive care in the setting of the patient’s choosing.

Susanville Park Plans Approved
April 7, 1947
City officials and members of Susanville’s public park committee this week approved the final blueprint plans for what probably will be known as Susanville Memorial Park.
Glenn Hall, city planning engineer from Sacramento, presented two plans to the group. One of these plans was accepted as fitting the area for the city’s new park after some revisions had been made and agreed upon. Mr. Hall promised to have the final plans completed and back to Susanville within three weeks.
When these plans are received, the committee will immediately start primary action upon the park site. Survey of the plans indicate the park will include tennis courts, children’s playground and wading pool, an area for teenage recreation, baseball park, handball courts, horseshoe courts, camp-fire circle, and a community or scout building as soon as feasible.
