Lassen Gravel Adventure Ride on the Bizz Coming Up September 6th
Calling all adventure seekers! The Lassen Gravel Adventure Bike Ride is back for another year of challenging climbs, scenic vistas and pure gravel-grinding fun on the Bizz Johnson Trail in the forest playground west of Susanville.
Set for Saturday, September 6th, this year’s event promises something for every rider, from seasoned veterans to enthusiastic newcomers.
Unlike many ‘gravel’ rides that include significant stretches of pavement, the Lassen Gravel Adventure Ride stays true to its name.

As you ride along the Susan River, you’ll pass through two incredible, historical train tunnels on the Bizz Johnson Trail. The long course will take you near the shores of two serene, high altitude lakes.

Mudslide Closes Highway 395 Near Red Rock Road for Five Hours
A fierce thunderstorm unleashed a torrential downpour Wednesday afternoon, triggering a substantial mudslide that forced the closure of a section of Highway 395 near the California-Nevada border. The slide occurred approximately a quarter-mile north of Red Rock Road, bringing traffic to a halt in both directions.
Caltrans crews worked for several hours through the night to clear the mud and debris. The highway finally reopened to traffic in both directions around 1:00 a.m. Thursday morning.
The thunderstorm was part of a series of intense weather cells that swept through southern Lassen County on Wednesday, causing minor flooding in other localized areas.

Cal-FIRE’s New Helicopter Soars into Action Against Lightning-Caused Blazes
The skies over Lassen, Modoc, and Plumas Counties have a new guardian. Cal-FIRE’s Lassen-Modoc Unit has deployed its brand-new S-70i Fire Hawk helicopter, which the agency says has already proven its worth by actively combating the recent surge of lightning-caused fires in our region.
Stationed in Bieber, the Fire Hawk represents a significant leap forward in local firefighting capabilities. “This aircraft is a game-changer for fire response in our region,” stated a Cal-FIRE LMU spokesperson.
The Fire Hawk is specifically engineered for demanding missions. It boasts a 1,000-gallon water tank, allowing it to deliver substantial water drops on active fires. Its advanced navigation systems and night-flying capabilities are a major upgrade from the previous helicopter, enabling crews to operate more effectively around the clock.
This enhanced technology means Cal-FIRE can now respond more rapidly to fires and emergencies across the expansive Lassen, Modoc, and Plumas Counties.
Beyond direct fire suppression, the Fire Hawk provides crucial support to ground crews and excels at locating lightning fires in remote, rugged terrain, often a challenge for traditional response methods.
Its rapid deployment and advanced features are expected to significantly bolster the region’s ability to tackle wildfires.

Tickets are available for presale at $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under. Door tickets will be $12 for adults and $7 for kids. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs to enjoy the festivities.
Presale tickets will still be available today at Margie’s Book Nook in uptown Susanville.
Money raised at Saturday’s event will help the Humane Society continue their spay and neuter program, which is out of funds for the year. This has been a very successful and popular program in Lassen County.
The Lassen Humane Society was formed in 1985 by a handful of dedicated volunteers who engaged in the challenge of advocacy for Lassen County animals.
LHS sometimes receives funding from grants which the organization write themselves; however, they are unreliable and hard to get. Their more consistent funding comes from annual fundraisers, memberships, and donations. They receive no federal, state or local funding. All monies they raise or receive go right back into our Lassen County communities.
You can find out more about the services they offer by clicking here.

Hoots and Annie, playing country, country rock, southern rock, classic rock
and oldies will be one of the bands performing at the August 2nd festival in the park.

Lassen Fire Near End
August 1, 1924
One of the most destructive and stubborn forest fires in the history of Lassen County is at last burning into a section where control is assured after destroying over 4000 acres of timber in the Fruit Growers’ Supply Company’s property at the edge of the Lassen National Forest.
The blaze covered an eight-mile front and was within several hundred yards of Eagle Lake Resort when checked. A temporary camp has been established at Eagle Lake to care for the fire fighters and provide food and other supplies.
The fire is 18 miles northeast of Westwood and 31 miles northwest of Susanville. Tourists are again entering Eagle Lake, although it will take at least two days to completely extinguish the smaller brush and stump fires.
