Lassen County 4H’ers welcomed prospective new members at their annual Open House held Tuesday evening at the Tractor Supply Store on Main Street in Susanville.
Project, animal and educational displays from eight different Lassen County 4H clubs gave visitors a chance to see what amazing things can be done as part of the group.
New enrollments for Lassen 4H begin September 1st, giving youth aged 5 to 19 a chance to participate in hands-on learning experiences.

The 4H Program is an educational youth program conducted by the University of California Cooperative Extension. The purpose of 4-H is to help young people discover and develop their potential and grow into competent, contributing and caring citizens.
Learn-by-doing activities, youth-adult partnerships, and research-based educational programs help young people enhance their leadership abilities and develop a wide range of other life skills including responsibility, community service, citizenship and critical thinking.
4H allows members to explore things like shooting sports, photography, cooking, quilting, art leadership, gardening, animal projects and more.
How do you join? Pick a 4-H club you would like to join, then contact the club leader, or stop by the 4-H Office at 707 Nevada Street.
Enrollment time in most clubs is open September 1 through November 15, but enrollment in some clubs may be closed.

The aftermath of the Paul Bunyan Lumber Company’s devastating 1946 fire. | |
Lumber Company Rebuilding Mill
August 23, 1946
Construction started this week by the Paul Bunyan Lumber Co of a new sawmill on the site of its former one which was destroyed by fire the end of last May. R. L. Kemp, manager, said foundations were poured Wednesday and he estimated the mill would be ready for operation the first of the year.
When completed the mill and allied logging operations will employ about 15 men according to Mr. Kemp. He added he was not sure when the woods operation would start.
The new sawmill will be modern with all electric equipment the manager said. It is to be constructed from sections of about five different mills being shipped here from the south he said.
Eighteen men Paul Bunyan employs are now at work building the mill. Mr. Kemp said construction of a new machine shop was recently completed on the grounds.
