Adopt A Pet from the Lassen
County Animal Shelter – Miss Rusty
Well hello there, I’m Miss Rusty, and I’ve been told I’m the purrfect mix of sugar and spice.
I’ll admit it, when I first got to the shelter, I wasn’t so sure about this whole “meeting new people” thing. I can be a little shy at first, but every day I’m getting braver.
You know what’s helped the most? Making friends with the other kittens! They’ve shown me that new places aren’t so scary, and now my curious, playful side is coming out more and more each day.

Once I know you’re kind, I’ll reward your patience with gentle purrs, playful antics, and plenty of kitten mischief. I still have that adorable little spark that keeps life interesting, just enough spice to make you smile and enough sweetness to melt your heart.
I’m looking for a family who will give me a little time to settle in and let my personality blossom. I may not be the first kitten to race into your arms, but I have a feeling I’ll end up right where I belong, curled up in your lap.

Featured animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter are available for adoption on a first-come-first-serve basis. According to California law, all adoptable dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered before leaving our facility. If interested in adopting an animal, please contact the shelter directly.
Current shelter hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday. You can contact the shelter at 1.530.257.9200.

Sunrise Rotarians Accepting Applications for Community Sponsorships
The Susanville Sunrise Rotary Club is now accepting applications from local organizations seeking community sponsorships and financial support for local service projects.
If your group or organization would like to be considered for funding, applications can be picked up at either LMUD or the Lassen County Office of Education.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. Each year, the club selects one major community service project to receive funding. Additional smaller projects may also be considered, subject to the availability of budgeted funds.

Lassen Walk for Hope: Suicide Awareness Walk Set for September 12th
The Lassen County Office of Education is inviting the community to gather for the Lassen Walk for Hope – Suicide Awareness Walk on Saturday, September 12th, at Lassen Community College. The event will take place from 9:00a.m. to 12:00p.m.
This special morning brings residents together to honor loved ones, support those who may be struggling and send a clear message that hope, connection and compassion can make a life-saving difference.
Participants of all ages are welcome to come out and walk together in support of local mental health and suicide prevention efforts.

A free lunch will be provided for attendees, and organizers will share additional event details as the date approaches.

Rotary Club Hosts 2nd Annual
Senior Citizens Celebration Luncheon
The Rotary Club of Susanville is inviting area seniors to a free celebration lunch in honor of Lassen County’s valued senior citizens. The 2nd Annual Senior Citizens Celebration Luncheon will take place on Saturday, August 22nd, from 11:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. at the Lassen Senior Center, located at 1700 Sunkist Drive in Susanville.
This special event is dedicated in memory of Shane Holland and offers local seniors a chance to enjoy fellowship, music, entertainment, and a delicious meal prepared directly by local Rotarians—all completely free of charge.

Register Now for Susanville Salvation Army’s Back to School Shopping Spree
The Salvation Army of Susanville is gearing up to help local students start the upcoming school year with confidence, comfort, and the right wardrobe by hosting its annual Back to School Clothing Shopping Spree.
Through this community-centered program, selected students will have the opportunity to shop for $150 in brand-new school clothes, helping ease the financial burden on local families as they prepare for the new academic term.

According to organizers, the program is open to all Lassen County students entering grades K-12, explicitly including local homeschool students. Please note that the program does not cover Pre-K, TK, or preschool-aged children.
Because spots for the shopping spree are limited, participants will be reviewed and filled according to financial need to ensure assistance goes to those who need it most. Families interested in having their children considered for this program must fill out and complete the registration sign-up form. Click here to fill out and print the form.
Applications are open until August 15th. Families will be notified starting September 1st.

Susanville and Westwood State Preschools Now Enrolling Students for 2026-2027
Susanville State Preschool and Westwood State Preschool are now accepting enrollment for the 2026–2027 school year and still has spots available for local families. Children who are 3 to 4 years old, or who will turn 3 by December 1st, 2026, may be eligible to join the program this year.
This high-quality early learning program offers a warm, supportive environment designed to help young children grow socially, emotionally, and academically. Families can benefit from an income-qualified program that provides breakfast and lunch daily, along with age-appropriate learning activities and curriculum tailored to preschool development.

Each child spends three and a half meaningful hours a day engaging with peers their own age, building foundational skills that prepare them for future school success.
The program is designed to serve as an important stepping stone, helping each child gain confidence, curiosity, and readiness for kindergarten and beyond.

Alignment Near Completion
August 3, 1971
THE REALIGNED PORTION of Alexander Avenue, shown at left, is expected to be opened to traffic about September 7th. H-B Investments started work yesterday on surfacing of the new street section.
The city has also contracted with H-B Investments to resurface Alexander Avenue from the new alignment to Riverside Drive. This work is expected to be in progress today.
When the realigned street is reopened the present section of Alexander Avenue from Main Street to the north property line of the Cramer property, located back of Gunderson’s Texaco Service Station, will be abandoned.
