DT alum Sofia Bennett taught some sideline dances to the Grizzliettes and Cheer Team. Starting a new collab at LHS, the sideline dances are short and easy to implement with any kind of music, including pieces played by the Drumline.

The Grizzliettes are looking forward to working with the LHS Cheerleaders and hope that a larger group of performers on the track will create a positive, but loud, crowd culture in the grandstands. 

Former captain Anna Townsend and her LCOE colleague Amber Akiwo led the team in a couple Team Building and Bonding exercises. The dancers started by taking a short, fun personality test which classified them as a bear, retriever, otter, or lion. Then they learned what qualities each type has and how they can work best together.

They also shared their histories in dance, heroes, and hopes for the future. The purpose was to recognize how you might help another team member when they need encouragement and empathy.

The next day, each team member shared something positive about the others, which culminated in a team-wide goal setting. There were lots of smiles around the circle as each girl read what others had shared, from their kind actions and words to the dedication they give to their team.

With no ribbons or awards, this year’s camp looked a little different than years past, but the outcome might be even better. Our team put together three-days of choreography, creativity, and teamwork that was tailored to our needs and now they are ready to get out on the field.

The Grizzliettes aren’t the only team putting in the work. Last week Lassen Football hosted their first annual Camp Grizz, a two-day intensive held at Sentimental Journey, and our Cheerleaders invited a UCA instructor to our campus to assist with cheers and stunts.

Looks like our students are ready for the school year even when some of the adults (it’s me, I can only speak for me) aren’t quite there yet!

UC Cooperative Extension Holding Forest 
Stewardship Workshop Series Beginning This Evening

The University of California Cooperative Extension invites local forest landowners and interested community members to register for an upcoming Forest Stewardship workshop series designed to provide foundational forestry knowledge. Running on Zoom every Tuesday from today, August 4th, through September 29th from 6:00p.m. to 7:30p.m., the series also features an optional in-person field day on Saturday, August 29th in Plumas County.

The workshop series aims to help participants develop their own customized forest management plans while connecting them with other local landowners and forestry professionals. It is open not only to landowners but also to any community members eager to learn more about forest management, forest and fire ecology and related environmental topics.

Over the course of the multi-week series, attendees will explore a comprehensive range of topics. The curriculum covers forest management objectives and planning, forest health, insects, and diseases.

Participants will also dive into forest and fire ecology, wildlife, watersheds, fuels reduction, and forest resource marketing.

Additionally, the sessions will guide landowners through mapping, inventory, silviculture, project development, and navigating necessary permits.

Finally, the workshop will teach attendees how to secure professional help and take advantage of available cost-share opportunities.

As a major benefit of the program, participants who complete the full course will be eligible for a free site visit by a California Registered Professional Forester, Certified Burn Boss, or Certified Range Manager, which carries an $800 value.

Registration costs $75, which covers all workshop materials, facilitator time, and lunch during the Plumas County field day. Financial scholarships are available upon request for those who need them.

Because appointments fill up rapidly ahead of the school year, parents and guardians are highly encouraged to review the dates and book an exam as early as possible to ensure their child doesn’t miss the first day of practice.

Families can take advantage of affordable pricing, with a $40 fee payable directly at the time of the visit, though medical insurance may also be billed.

To streamline the appointment, please remember that a parent or legal guardian must be physically present during the visit to provide the required signed consent. Additionally, student-athletes are asked to wear shorts on their scheduled exam day to facilitate a quick and proper physical evaluation.

To accommodate households across the region, physicals are being offered at multiple convenient locations throughout the summer and early fall. For those looking to book an appointment in Susanville at the Northeastern Rural Health Clinic, dates are available on August 11th, August 18th, August 25th and September 15th.

Families in neighboring communities can also access these services closer to home, with a clinic scheduled on-site at Westwood Family Practice today, August 4th.

Please keep in mind that all listed dates are subject to change. Don’t wait until the last minute to secure your athlete’s clearance. Participants will have the chance to train with a collegiate coach, develop solid fundamentals, enhance their confidence, and gain invaluable experience just in time for the upcoming season.

Whether your player is brand new to the position or looking to level up existing skills, this hands-on session is designed for goalkeepers of all experience levels.

Participants should bring water and goalie gloves if they already have them.

Two separate sessions will be offered based on grade level:

The first session runs from 10:00a.m. to 11:15a.m. for athletes in 2nd through 6th grade.

The second session takes place from 11:30a.m. to 1:00p.m. for players in 7th grade and up, and adults are welcome to join as well.

The fee is $35 per player, which includes attendance for both the player and their coach.

Here in the Honey Lake Valley temperatures are expected to climb to between 95 and 102 degrees during the peak of this event, with overnight lows offering only minor relief as they hover between 58 and 65 degrees.

With widespread Moderate Heat Risk expected across the region, heat-related illnesses become significantly more likely. This risk is especially high for anyone spending extended periods outdoors, those residing in poorly cooled indoor environments, or individuals who are particularly sensitive to extreme temperatures.

To stay safe throughout the week, residents are strongly encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, limit sun exposure, and remain in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. It is also vital to take a moment to check in on relatives, elderly neighbors, and vulnerable community members.

Get Ready to Swap: Puzzle Exchange Returns 
to August 12th Depot Night Market

It’s time to dig through your closets and clear off those shelves! The popular Puzzle Exchange is making its return at the Lassen Land and Trails Trust Depot Night Market on Wednesday, August 12th, hosted at the Historic Railroad Depot on Richmond Road. Whether you are looking to clear out completed jigsaws or hunt for a brand-new challenge, this community event makes it easy to refresh your puzzle collection.

Getting involved starts well before the night of the market. From now through August 10th, you can drop off your gently used, complete jigsaw puzzles at Margie’s Book Nook. Out of respect for fellow puzzlers, please ensure there are no missing pieces! For every puzzle you drop off, you will receive an exchange ticket.

When market night arrives on August 12th, simply head over to the Historic Railroad Depot and stop by the Puzzle Exchange tent, conveniently located right next to the Market Info tent. Hand in your ticket and browse the selection to pick out a “new-to-you” puzzle to take home and enjoy.

If you don’t have any puzzles at home to trade but still want to grab a fresh set, a limited number of exchange tickets will be available for purchase for $5 at the Market Info Booth.

If you drop off puzzles ahead of time but can’t make it out to the Night Market to complete your trade, there is no need to worry. Any leftover puzzles from the event will be brought back to Margie’s Book Nook, where they will be available for pick-up after the event.

Gather up those finished puzzles, drop them off at Margie’s before August 10th, and get ready to swap!

Vacation Atmosphere at Lake Forest Estates

August 4, 1973

In the cool setting of a pine tree forest about five miles northwest of Susanville, on the Eagle Lake Road, one can live in a vacation atmospheres. Near the recreation sites of Eagle Lake and Lake Almanor, Lake Forest Estates is only 10 minutes from Susanville’s business district.

As one drives through Lake Forest Estates the quiet and serenity is readily apparent. Yet there is activity in the air. A mobile home going in here, a permanent structure there. Some homes are newly finished while others are under construction.

Developed by Dean Beckett and Russell Realty, the area was first intended for vacationers, said Phil Russell of Russell Realty. “But people found it desirable for permanent homes,” he said. And the mixture of mobile homes and permanent structures soon became a reality.

There is power, phones and water available for each lot at Lake Forest. And county road crews began paving the streets last week. “The county,” said Russell, “Will be maintaining the roads.” Lake Forest Mutual Water Co. furnishes the water. Russell Realty handles sales and promotion.

At least two of the homes were partially constructed of logs from nearby trees. Yet the luxurious A-Frame structures are far from the log cabine of yesteryear. Many of the new homes have grass covered yards. Some have vegetable and flower gardens.

Some people chooes to camp on their lot but many people plan on retirement there. Others are moving their families to Lake Forest as construction of their homes is completed. School districs provide bus service for students.

Still others use their lot for what it was originally intended – vacations.

Although many lots are sold, property is still available in the forested setting for as little as $100 down, said Russell. Most lots have been sold to Californians with between 40 and 50 percent to Susanville residents. Not many lots have gone to people form out of state.

Yet along with the newly paved roads and modern homes the vacation atmosphere still persists. And whether a retiree or a commuter, a vacationer or a camper, the individual will find Lake Forest Estates an experience in serenity.
