Susanville Future Farmers Help Salvation Army Stuff Stockings for the Angel Tree
On the evening of December 8th, members of the Susanville Future Farmers of America gathered to ensure that every child in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program receives a stocking this holiday season.
The group stuffed nearly 200 stockings – a massive increase from previous years. While the students typically prepare around 50 stockings, the heightened need in the community this year tasked the FFA members with quadrupling their normal output.
To meet this goal, the students rallied support from generous local sponsors who donated stockings, toys, necessities, and cash to purchase specific items in need.
“Our gratitude on behalf of the children we are helping cannot be expressed in words,” said Susanville Salvation Army coordinator Carla McDonald. “We want to thank every business, student, and individual that contributed to the success of this project in such a short period of time.”
FFA Advisor Elizabeth Ammon thanked the students who brought in items and donated money, while also recognizing a list of generous community supporters:
- Kirack Construction
- Peace Officers Association
- Jo Forsyth
- Dena Wemple
- Ranielle Mallery
- Lori Cooley
- NCAA and Shelley Bennett
- Andy Shuck (who hand-crocheted over 100 items to donate)

Be a Hero: Two Vitalant Blood Drives Coming to Susanville Next Week and in January
Vitalant has announced two major opportunities for Susanville residents to roll up their sleeves and make a lifesaving difference this winter. With critical shortages often occurring around the holidays, the community is being asked to come together to help replenish the supply.
The Need is Constant
Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. That statistic represents real people—it could be a little girl in the ICU, an accident victim, or a mother battling Stage 3 leukemia. Your single donation can save up to three lives.
| | | |
If you’ve never donated because you’re worried about needles, put those fears aside! Most blood donors compare the experience to nothing more than a mild, split-second pinch. The entire process is very safe, very fast, and you will walk away feeling amazing knowing you have directly impacted the lives of others.
Here are the details for the two upcoming opportunities to donate:
Susanville Holiday Blood Drive (Community Center)
Help meet the critical need during the holiday season at the first Community Center Blood Drive! As a special bonus, donors who give blood between December 1st and December 31st are automatically entered for a chance to win $20,000.
Susanville Community Center 95 N. Weatherlow Street
Tuesday, December 16: 10:00a.m. to 2:30p.m.
Wednesday, December 17th: 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m.
Annual January Community Blood Drive (LDS Church)
Kick off the new year by being a lifesaver. Join the annual community drive at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Gym) 905 Richmond Road
Tuesday, January 20th: 12:00p.m. to 5:30p.m.

Ex Mayor Jim Chapman
December 12, 1976
EX-MAYOR JIM CHAPMAN, left, hands the mayor’s gavel over to the newly elected mayor, Councilman Charles Richardson, who was elected by the City Council at their meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 6th, at 7:30p.m. in the council chambers.
This is Richardson’s second term as mayor of Susanville, an office he held for one year from April 1965 to April 1966. Richardson, who retired as a ranger from the California Division of Forestry in 1975, was a City Councilman from 1964 to 1972. In March of 1976 he was again elected to the Council until his new position as mayor.
Chapman was recently elected to the County Board of Supervisors and resigned as mayor at the Council’s meeting.
When asked why he has become mayor for a second time, Richardson commented “because the council has chosen me to do it.”
He also feels that he definitely has his work cut out for him. “These next three months,” says Richardson, “the work load will be the heaviest, because we will only have three Councilmen.” It is more than probable that the Council will have an election in March.
The Council may appoint their members but must do so within 30 days of an opening or must have an election within 74 days. (Advocate photo).
