Roop’s Fort after restoration in October of 1938 | |
Improvements to Roops Fort Discussed
at Meeting of Shasta-Cascade Wonderland
December 13, 1938
A large crowd attended the meeting of the Shasta-Cascade Wonderland, held last night in the Hotel Mt. Lassen. Chairman Ross Draper presided.
Featuring the program was the presentation, “Susanville Is Born,” by a cast of Lassen Union High School students, directed by vice principal G. A. Collyer.
The play, which was presented over Station KOH in Reno some weeks ago, was written by Marilyn Denton and depicts the story of Issac N. Roop and the establishment of a trading post here.
In the cast were: Laurence Weseman, Charles MacDonald, Marilyn Denton, Douglas Vandeburgh, Frank Maurino, Gene Kayser, with sound effects by Alfeo Del Favero, and orgatron recordings by Donald E. Butler.
Georgia Jensen, secretary for the council, outlined plans for landscaping Roop’s Fort, and the building of a rail fence, to make the scene as natural as possible.
Natural color pictures of scenic views in Lassen County were shown by Milr Simmons, and taken by Eastman Studios.
Eric O. Hebbe, of the Susanville Ski Club, gave a fine talk of the winter sports advantages of this region. Alec Sifford gave a poem.
During a discussion on road conditions in the county, the council recommended an overpass at the railroad crossing at Westwood Junction, where Mrs. W. C. Ames was seriously injured recently in a collision with a freight train.
Following the high school program, Director Collyer introduced the cast.
