Josh Blackburn welcomes his former LHS students

The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett

It’s a well-known fact that Santa only had to check his list twice. I think he might be fibbing. I have multiple lists and I’ve had to check them all more than twice.

I’ve got a list of presents purchased and presents that need to be purchased. There’s the grocery list and the Walmart list.

The list of what we’re eating for Christmas Eve dinner (a.k.a. Sofia’s Birthday), Christmas Day Breakfast, and Christmas Dinner. A list of treats to be made. And a list of deliveries that need to be done.

Luckily this week doesn’t include a list of assignments to create, lessons to plan, and papers to grade!

High on my list of things to do is soak up this time with my family. Every time the five of us are together, I am super aware that it might be the last time that I get them in the same place for this long.

Jake and Landon have been eating in a dining hall for the past four months and they are happily adding their favorite family dinners to the list of things to cook and eat: fried chicken, tamale pie, steak.

One list that is dwindling is the list of places to go. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the holiday events I have been able to attend.

Last week the Drill Team was invited by principal Josh Blackburn to help at Shaffer School’s Christmas Carnival. With the help of Anna Townsend, the girls placed glittery tattoos on the arms of many young girls and boys. They were definitely a hit!

The school grounds were beautifully decked out in lights and with the sweet voices of students filling the air with carols, really put me in the holiday mood.

Then I drove through the Live Nativity at the Church of the Latter-Day Saints with friends. Christina Anderson (with her husband Tim and a creative team of volunteers) keeps adding more amazingness to this display. This year there was a program, more set pieces, accompanying music, and a beautiful host of graceful angels.

It was especially fun to see who you could spot in their roles of shepherds, guards, angels, etc. Some broke the fourth wall (Luke Peterson, Logan Stiles, Justin Ellena) and some were firmly committed.

Since we were already in the car, it was natural to drive through the Festival of Lights at the Lassen County Fairgrounds. We were so proud of Lassen High’s entry which won first place! The scene of ice-skating bears was imagined and created by our Student Advocate Nancy Singh.

It was over-the-top adorable Miss Nancy! Congratulations! I bet she is already planning what to do next year.

With each thing that gets checked off my list, my mind gets one step closer to Christmas. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and cherish your time with family and friends. See you in 2023!

There was a lot of holiday fun to be had at Thompson Peak

Charter School’s annual Gingerbread Night – photo submitted

Thompson Peak Charter Hosts PTSA Gingerbread Night

Festive fun returned to Thompson Peak Charter school on Tuesday when the annual PTSA Gingerbread Night was held for the first time since 2019.

All of the school’s students, staff and families were invited to participate in the big party.

“We served a full spaghetti dinner, played a movie in our great hall and provided all the materials for each child in attendance to build their very own, one-of-a-kind, gingerbread house,” explains TPCS Clerical Assistant Jenn Roshau.

“It was so nice to be able to bring back the tradition – everyone had so much fun!”

Westwood Wellness Center Reopens

After Temporary Snow Closure

The Westwood Wellness Center, on Birch Street, is again open for services after a brief temporary closure due to hazardous winter conditions.

The center was shut down December 10th, out of caution, as snow affected roadways, walkways and the center’s parking lot.

“We anticipate a robust winter season this year so please use caution driving and when walking in parking lots and walkways to prevent falls,” says County Director of Health and Social Services Barbara Longo, MS, RDN.

The center is open Monday through Friday from 9:30a.m., to 4:00p.m.

Icy Roads and Drinking Don’t Mix: Police Department Begins Holiday Campaign

The Susanville Police Department is reminding folks about the dangers of driving impaired this holiday season, encouraging them to celebrate the holidays responsibly by not driving under the influence.

“From now through New Year’s Day, the Susanville Police Department will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” explains SPD Cheif Ryan Cochran.

The extra enforcement effort is part of a national campaign, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, with the goal of stopping suspected impaired drivers who put others on the road at risk.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 11,654 people were killed in car crashes nationwide in 2020 that involved an alcohol-impaired driver, or one person every 45 minutes.

“The Susanville Police Department encourages everyone to stay in for the night or have a ‘go safely’ game plan by scheduling a ride or designating a sober driver if you plan to consume alcohol.

“Impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Marijuana, prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may also impair. Do your research and understand how certain drugs may affect your driving ability.”

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Susanville Man Finds Out it’s a Small World

December 20th, 1955

Steve Arainty, who has returned to Susanville after a visit of six months with his parents in France, is convinced it’s a small world.

On his first return to France since arriving here eight years ago, Arainty related he met in Nice a retired schoolteacher, Fitz Henry, who had taught in the Susanville schools.

Henry, 80, retired in 1947 and is residing on the Riviera.

Arainty was enthusiastic about traveling through France by car. He stated he purchased a French vehicle for $1,050, used it six months, then sold it on leaving for $990.00

The Susanville man, who visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dominic Arainty of Tarbes, Hautes Pyrenees, flew his own plane to New Jersey where he put it in storage.

He flew to France by commercial airline. His European visit included a month spent in Spain. He returned to the United States by ship, picked up his airplane and flew home.
