Susanville Fire Department Secures $40,000 Grant for Life-Saving Equipment
The Susanville Fire Department has secured a significant boost to its emergency response capabilities thanks to a $40,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. The funding is designated for the purchase of modern extrication equipment, commonly known as the “Jaws of Life,” which will aid in rescuing victims trapped in vehicles after collisions.
Department officials expressed deep gratitude for the award, noting that the new state-of-the-art rescue tools will play a pivotal role in protecting the community. According to the department, this upgrade will allow crews to respond more effectively during crises and provide critical training for first responders regarding the care of those injured in crashes.
| | | |
The acquisition of these hydraulic rescue tools addresses a crucial component of emergency medicine: post-crash care. Expedient extraction and treatment are often the deciding factors between life and death according to the agency. Federal data highlights the urgency of these situations, revealing that approximately 42 percent of individuals killed in car crashes were still alive when first responders arrived on the scene.
By reducing the time required to reach a patient and begin treatment, the department aims to significantly increase survival chances for those involved in severe accidents. The new equipment will help first responders deliver life-saving measures more rapidly to patients trapped inside wrecked vehicles.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

4H Ambassadors’ Corner: Busy
Holiday Season for Lassen 4H’ers
By John Ammon and Abigail Hemphill
2025-2026 Lassen County 4H Ambassadors
4-H clubs have been busy with community service activities. Lake and Richmond 4-H members helped set up flags and cleaned the Janesville and Diamond Crest Cemeteries in honor of Veteran’s Day.
Johnstonville 4-H members passed out flowers to the Veterans who were at the Veteran’s Day parade. Lake made ten Thanksgiving baskets for Janesville Elementary School families.
| | | |
South County members were busy making popcorn balls for Santa’s bag so he could hand them out during the Tree Lighting ceremony on Saturday.
On November 15th, Standish and Dyer Mountain 4-H clubs hosted Favorite Food’s Day at the Westwood Community Center. Members participated by making their favorite dish and/or competing in the table setting contest. This year’s special ingredient was apples.
Congratulations to Bailey Adams, Landon Baehler, and Elaina Strand for placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
We would like to thank the Lassen County Cattlewomen for sponsoring the award for the best beef dish and Standish 4-H for sponsoring the award for the best apple dish.
From November 28th to December 14th, Tractor Supply is hosting the biannual Paper Clover campaign. Tractor Supply customers can “purchase” a paper clover at checkout and it directly benefits the 4-H organization.
We appreciate Tractor Supply’s support and helping our members become “Beyond Ready.”
On December 12th, from 12:00 to 6:00p.m. and December 13th from 9:00a.m. until 4:00p.m., Standish 4-H will be hosting their annual craft fair. You could win a decorated tree along with being able to purchase a variety of holiday themed items.

Toys for Tots Drive Now Underway
December 8, 1980
The LOCAL TOYS FOR TOTS DRIVE is now running full speed ahead and toys are starting to pile up at the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department, as Sheriff Del Gorbet, left and project coordinator Dan James show.
Sheriff’s deputies have been collecting toys since last month in their efforts to brighten Christmas for area needy children. Broken but repairable toys are being fixed by Correctional Center inmates and they will be handed out by Christmas with the help of the county Welfare Department.
James said he hopes the project can serve more than the 300 children who were reached last year.
He also hopes for enough donations to get a head start on next year’s project. Donations of used toys, especially those in good shape or repairable, may be taken to the sheriff’s office or to several locations with Toys for Tots boxes. (Advocate photo by Jeff Fontana)
