Adopt A Pet from the Lassen
County Animal Shelter
Lassen County Animal Shelter – January 2025 Report
We’re kicking off 2025 with a strong commitment to saving lives and finding loving homes for our animals! Here’s a look at our January statistics and what they mean for the future:
Total Intakes: 60 – We welcomed 60 animals into our care this past month, ensuring each one received the love and support they needed.
| |
|
Owner Surrenders: 23 – While some pets had to be surrendered due to various circumstances, our team worked hard to find them the best possible outcomes.
Adoptions: 13 – Thirteen wonderful animals found their forever homes! Thank you to all the adopters who opened their hearts and homes.
Reunited with Owners: 10 – We successfully reunited 10 pets with their families! A big reminder to keep your pets microchipped and tagged to increase the chances of a happy reunion.
Transfers to Rescue Partners: 29 – Our network of rescue partners helped us ensure even more animals had a second chance. Collaboration is key to saving lives!
87% Save Rate – We are incredibly proud of our save rate, which reflects our dedication to positive outcomes for the animals in our care.
We are thrilled to announce that we are collaborating with another shelter and will soon be welcoming a group of wonderful dogs looking for loving homes. These new arrivals will make fantastic companions for Lassen County residents. If you’ve been thinking about adopting, now is the perfect time! As we move forward in 2025, we aim to increase adoptions, reunite even more lost pets, and continue working with our rescue partners to give every animal the best chance at a happy life.
Give us a call at 1.530.257.9200 or visit us at 472-000 Johnstonville Road to learn more. Let’s make this year even better for the animals of Lassen County!
Featured animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter are available for adoption on a first-come-first-serve basis. According to California law, all adoptable dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered before leaving our facility. If interested in adopting an animal, please contact the shelter directly.
Current shelter hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday. You can contact the shelter at 1.530.257.9200.

Looking down Main from above the Elks Lodge
Tuesday Morning’s Susanville Solstice Provides a Unique Photo Opportunity
The annual Susanville Spring Solstice happens Tuesday, February 11th, at precisely 7:00a.m., when sunrise will align with Susanville’s Main Street and for just a few minutes following sunrise, buildings on both sides of the street are illuminated equally, with odd shadows that parallel the street from the Elks Lodge all the way down to the big bend at Mesa Street.
It’s a unique event that happens twice a year just by natural coincidence – depending on the year it occurs on October 29th or 30th and then again on February 10th or 11th.
“But the Summer Solstice isn’t until June,” some people feel the need to point out. But this is not that, this is the Susanville Solstice. Relax. It’s completely made up. But we love it.
When you think back over time, the hardest, worst winter storms always seem to happen between the end of October and the middle of February, so these two solstices are actually a pretty good bookend for our Susanville winters.

From the photoephemeris.com
So, what do you do on a Susanville Solstice morning? Well, lots of us meet uptown to take pictures. The show only lasts a few minutes and there are so many unique things to photograph during the alignment.
In past years photographers, including world-famous-outdoor-adventure-photographer Randy Robbins, show up with their cameras to shoot the unique scene about ten minutes before sunrise. It’s like a fun, very short, party to celebrate the occasion.
Remember to dress warmly, because it gets pretty cold standing around on Main Street waiting for the sun to come up. This year the predicted low for the morning is 13 degrees.
The weather experts at the National Weather Service office in Reno are saying we should have mostly clear skies Tuesday, and with those high clouds we might get a beautiful sunrise to take pictures of so grab your cameras and come join us on Main Street. See you there!
