Susanville State Preschool gets a visit from HopeWheels – photos provided
Susanville State Preschool Hosts a Fun-Filled Event with Hope Wheels
By Kaitlyn Midgely
LCOE Communications Specialist
The Susanville State Preschool was filled with excitement and laughter on February 21 as students, families, and staff participated in a special event featuring the Hope Wheels Group. The morning was packed with music, movement, hands-on activities, and a wellness workshop for parents, creating a memorable experience for all involved.
The event kicked off with a heartwarming dance performance by the preschool students, who showcased their enthusiasm and energy in front of proud parents and staff.
Shortly after, the children moved to the gym area, where the Hope Wheels Group engaged them in interactive activities designed to inspire creativity, exploration, and fun. Meanwhile, parents gathered for a quick wellness session, focusing on practical tips for supporting their child’s well-being and development.
From building and creating with Hope Wheels materials to active play and movement exercises, the event gave students a chance to learn through hands-on experiences.

Hope Wheels, widely recognized for its Guinness World Record achievements, is dedicated to providing children with engaging activities that promote physical, cognitive, and social development.
Dawn German-Howe, Lassen County Office of Education’s Preschool Education Specialist, emphasized the impact of the event, saying, “It was incredible to see the joy on the students’ faces as they danced, played, and explored. Events like these highlight the power of movement and creativity in early childhood education. We are grateful to Hope Wheels for bringing such an engaging and meaningful experience to our preschool community.”
The event concluded with a shared lunch for students who remained on campus, allowing them to reflect on their fun-filled morning with friends and teachers.
Lassen County Office of Education and Susanville State Preschool extend their gratitude to the Hope Wheels Group, students, parents, and staff for making the day such a success. To learn more about Hope Wheels and their inspiring work, visit www.hopewheels.org.

She’s the Elphaba to my Glenda
The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett
For the past 15 years, my friend and coworker Dawn Lightsey has given her heart and soul to Lassen High School.
In the beginning she was hired as a clerk, assisting the director of the Lassen Technical Institute (LTI) and covering Academic Detention and lunch shifts in the front office.
She moved quickly to the Safety Office where she worked closely with the discipline team and security. Now she is our Registrar, an important facet of the counseling office, ensuring that students’ grades, credits, and transcripts are accurate and up to date, organizing graduations, registering new students, and in general, being the glue that holds this place together.
| |
|
Unofficially, she has acted as my personal classroom decorator and organizer, 2015’s Class Advisor (and in the background for 2018, 2020, 2024), dessert provider for birthdays, proms, and WASC visits, Girls Soccer team mom, and assistant team dinner caterer for Varsity Boys Basketball during the 2017-2020 seasons.
That’s what happens when you work with one of your best friends.
For every idea that I have, Dawn has something to embellish it. Whether it is a metallic fringe curtain to go around the base of a Homecoming float or battery-operated candles for Gatsby’s funeral, she will dig deep into her “stash” and there it will be on my desk in the morning. Like magic!
Known for being “extra”, Dawn goes all out for spirit days and decorating contests. Under her direction, the counseling office has been turned into a pirate ship with a skeleton at the wheel, a Winter Wonderland with glittery snowflakes hung from the ceiling, and a life-sized Gingerbread House complete with giant gumdrops and candy canes.
| |
You thought I was lying about the pirate ship?
And she will be the first one to tell you it’s all for the benefit of our students.
Dawn spends most of her time tracking down kids. From making sure their name is correct on their diploma to checking if they have enrolled in a new school after moving to a new town.
During Covid, she made sure that the Class of 2020 had the graduation they deserved. As I arrived on campus that morning, I started to cry because she had already covered the back parking lot with our grad’s banners and encased the surrounding buildings in purple.
There was a whole crew out there, but Dawn was in charge, waving her staple gun around and giving orders.
She’s also the person you contact when you need a transcript and I can’t tell you how many times she has dug through files from the 1970s and 80s when someone has applied for a new job or decided to finish their high school diploma.
When she was in the Safety Office, she kept her drawers stocked with snacks and bottled water for students who needed a pick-me-up. She was always kind and positive, even when monitoring lunch detention.
There was one boy, Kolby, who we both had a soft spot for. Dawn would send him to my room on an “errand” just so he could have a few minutes out of his chair.
Over the years, she has made sure that students have access to the resources they need, whether it be pre-natal care or a prom dress.
Friday will be Dawn’s last day of school. Her graduation from LHS. I know she is looking forward to spending time with husband Terry, traveling to visit daughters Katrece and Chantal, and taking grandkids Amour and Hunter on many adventures.
Thank you Dawn for sprinkling your glitter throughout the halls of Lassen High. We will be a little less sparkly without you.

Unintentional matching on the first day of school
Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to shelleybennett24@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”

Fruit Grower’s Mill in 1936 from an Eastman Studio postcard
Operations of lumber Mills to Begin Soon
Fruit Growers will Send Fallers into the Woods
February 25, 1934
Manager A. G. Breitwieser of Lassen Lumber & Box Company announces that their mill will begin operating March 5. To begin with the operation will be on about a 50 per cent basis, using up the NRA allotment of January, February and March.
By March 20 the allotment of the second quarter is expected to be supplied them and this will determine the extent of their operation for the first half of the year. At least a hundred men will be employed.
Fruit Growers Start March 12
Manager Earl Birmingham of the Fruit Growers states that their saw mill will begin operation March 12 and men will be added to their crew as they get under way.
Late in March fallers will be sent into the woods, and by April 1 is it expected they will have 150 men or more engaged in logging.
The contemplated activity will add 250 of their former employees to the payroll, and the outlook is that by early summer Fruit Growers Supply Company will be “back to normal” so far as logging and milling operations are concerned.
There have been a decided improvement in lumber demands during the past ten days and prospects for the industry in Lassen county point to operations approaching old time proportions.
New Mill Rumored
There are constant rumors of new mills being located near Susanville by early summer with crews ranging from 50 to 100 men in plants.
