City Water Division Tackles
Big Water Leak Near Walmart
A water leak behind the Susanville Walmart on Wednesday, led to a disruption of water service to the Wingate Mall after the City of Susanville Water Division responded to the incident, which was reported at 4:00 p.m.
According to Public Works Director Bob Godman, city crews isolated the leak and collaborated with Walmart to minimize the impact by identifying the smallest possible section of their private line for shutdown. However, this required turning off the water supply to Wingate Mall.

|
Walmart initiated repairs quickly, with plumbers on-site by 8:00a.m. Thursday. City crews worked alongside Walmart’s plumbers to assess the damage.
Unfortunately, explains Godman, “a specialized part needed for the repair had to be shipped from Reno and did not arrive until Saturday morning.”
The city staff explored alternative solutions to restore water to the mall during the interim but determined that no safe options existed.
Once the part arrived, Saturday morning, Walmart’s plumbers completed the repair, which included pouring concrete to stabilize the area. City crews assisted in restoring water service to Wingate Mall around noon.
Due to the line’s exposure to the outside environment, the State Division of Water Resources Engineer requested the City Water Division thoroughly flush the pipe and issue a five-minute flush and a voluntary boil water notice to Wingate Mall customers as a precaution. The city water crews also collected a water sample for contamination testing.
The City Water Division commended Walmart for their quick response and expressed gratitude to Wingate Mall customers for their patience during the repair process.

A Message from Susanville
Mayor Mendy Schuster
The strength of a community lies in its people, and when one is lost, a part of us all is gone. -Unknown
The recent loss of community members on highway 36 and 395 has been heartbreaking. My deepest condolences to the family and friends of those we lost.
As always, our community has come together to help the families who lost loved ones. Our citizens never cease to amaze me with the kindness, love and support they give when one of us is hurting. We are fortunate to live in a place where we genuinely care about each other.
I feel it’s important to let the community know your elected officials are meeting to figure out a way to make the highways between Susanville and Reno safer.

It could take some time, but the Lassen County Transportation Commission began the effort by holding an emergency meeting on February 6th.
We met with CalTrans, CHP, Congressman Doug LaMalfa’s office and more to share ideas and concerns regarding the safety between Reno and Susanville. Everything from four lanes to more double yellow lines was discussed but, at this time, we have to look for funding.
The Lassen County Transportation Commission is made up of members of Susanville City Council and Lassen County Board of Supervisors. The supervisors include Supervisor Aaron Albaugh, Supervisor Tom Neely and Supervisor Jason Ingram. The city council members include Mayor Pro Tem Russ Brown, Councilwoman Dawn Miller and myself.
I would be remiss if I did not mention former Lassen County supervisor Tom Hammond who has championed the effort to get four lanes between Reno and Susanville for years. I want to thank him for his continuing efforts.
Lassen County transportation commission meets on the second Monday of each month at 1:30 p.m. in council chambers at 66 North Lassen Street in Susanville. You can find information about the commission including our agendas at lassenctc.com.
Until next time…

Looking down at the Honey Lake Valley from Viewland in 1937 – from an Eastman Studios photograph | |
E.R. Spraker Offers Bet on Honey Lake
February 26, 1938
Just before the current storm began, E. R. Spraker offered to be 100 head of horses against $100 that Honey Lake would fill up this winter. It has been at least 20 years since this has occurred.
“Sprake’s” friends gave him the ha-ha for offering to make such a foolish wager, but it looks now as though he may have the last laugh.
R. L. Crew, assistant farm agent wants “Sprake” to tell him whether 100 head of horses would be worth $100 should the prediction be fulfilled.
Incidentally, the records of the local Department of Agriculture weather station show that there has been a precipitation of 23.59 inches from September 1, 1937, to February 14, 1938.
And for the first 14 days of February there has been a total of 9.57 inches.
Not since records have been kept, has an entire month of February had so much moisture as has fallen in the first 14 days of the current month.
