Mom Michelle and Dad Tyron look at Reegan with pride | |
The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett
Exciting news for Reegan Dunten of Lassen High School! He’s off to Southern Oregon University in Ashland to play football and attend college.
Last Thursday his parents Michelle and Tyron, friends, family members, and coaches gathered in the LHS library to celebrate Reegan’s next steps.
Before he signed his letter of commitment, a few of his football coaches spoke on what Reegan has to offer on the field.
| |
|
Coach Jason McMullen recalled that Reegan was known as the “Pancake King” for earning the pancake award several weeks in a row.
A pancake in football is when an offensive lineman blocks a defensive player and forces them to the ground. (Google told me that.)
Paul Moore, offensive coordinator, said that in certain situations in doesn’t matter what play you call, but what player you call to make that play. In many crucial instances this season, Reegan was the guy who made it happen.
Recruiter BT Thompson, who Reegan and his family have worked with, reminded the young athletes in attendance that only about “7% of high school athletes play at a higher level.”
He emphasized that you have to have a good work ethic and the ability to “hustle.”
Reegan is excited to pursue his education at SOU, majoring in Education. He hopes to earn his teaching credential in addition to making moves on the field as a Raider.
He says he knew that SOU was the right fit when he walked on campus. The community was welcoming and they have some great facilities.
His mom Michelle echoed that sentiment, saying that she “knew the moment [they] personally met Coach Brown”, it was very welcoming with a family feel. The coaching staff emphasized that “it’s not just about football, it’s about growing a leader, a responsible young man, and his education. We liked that.”
After the signing ceremony, the attendees were served cake and other treats.
Thank you to ASB/Athletics secretary Carol Kramer and Athletic Director Bob Nielsen for hosting the event. And go Raiders!

Reegan receives congratulations from his teammates
Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to shelleybennett24@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”

Scouts Clean Paiute Creek in Vicinity of Susanville’s City Park
February 4, 1971
Twenty three boys from Boy Scout Troop 58 and Cub Scout Pack 58 spent Saturday morning on a community project – cleaning Paiute Creek of litter from North Street through the city park, ending the project on the south side of Main Street where the new high school tennis courts are located.
A wide variety of debris was taken from the creek, filling the city dump truck two times.
Items found included boots, shoes, pants, tires, chains, bottles, cans, sunglasses, wire, barrels, tennis balls, limbs, boards and a suitcase.
The Scouts, after their clean up, expressed the hope that Susanville citizens would do their best to keep Susanville clean and beautiful.
The city furnished a dump truck and loader manned with a capable operator for the project.
The picture above was taken after the boys had completed their project. Those participating were Bruce Parshall, Gus Anderson, Wynn Stweart, Ken Patton, Clayton Ellis, Rex Haskett, Dave Ellis, Charles Flinchum, Ray Rice, Joe Almon, Jim Bright, Ken Guy, John Peay, Earl Johnson, Kenvin Drake, Leo Johnson and Paul Bates. Others assisting were Fred Dunell, scoutmaster; Tom Margrave, assistant scoutmaster; Wayne Rushing, guide patrol advisor, Bill Burr, Scout committee chairman and Ennard Kenoyer, equipment operator.
