Why We Love This Place Wednesday:
College Basketball Games
By Terra Avilla
This time of year is always so rough for me, because, well, Christmas is over, and it’s too early to be looking forward to spring break. It’s still cold, the days are short, and now the good holidays – like my birthday – aren’t for another 10 months. It’s just a “blah” time for me.
One thing, however, is a local constant this time of year that I can count on to make me happy, and that is catching our college basketball games! Guys, our team is good. Like really good.
| |
|
They are coached by Coach Freedman, (a “Why We Love This Place” article alumni), and it so cool to watch him and the women’s team, coached by Coach (Derrick) Jackson compete.
I know I spend a lot of time praising the baseball club for how great they are with my daughters, but I recently had a firsthand look and the men’s basketball team being ever so patient with my four-year-old, who invited herself onto the court, in the middle of their practice.
They were beyond adorable with her and were so polite to me.
Attending games is definitely a great way to get out of the house during these cold months. (Because, you know, it’s an inside sport, meaning you won’t freeze while watching it!)
Our crowd section is always filled with wonderful people, between alumni, college staff, the student section, and the other eclectic group of Cougar Basketball Fans, it is a great place to go unwind. And it’s a great price. The entry cost is minimal, the food pricing is a steal, and it is a total family friendly event.
If you have your kiddos playing basketball I would one hundred percent recommend catching a game. A lot of the time, a men’s team plays on the same day as the women’s team, so you get a two-for-one experience!
Heck, I know very little about the rules of the game, but between watching the players battle and watching how passionate the coaches coach, the games are very entertaining.
I can only imagine that if you actually understood the rules of the court, it would probably be a great experience tenfold.
The Cougs (both men and the women’s team) play today at the Lassen College Gym. The men play at 5:00 and the women play at 7:00. What a great way to break up the monotony that is this time of year than to go catch a local game.
By yourself, with your kids, or with your spouse, it is always a very fun environment.
Plus, these local athletes, I’m sure, would certainly appreciate, and deserve, your support. So, check out their schedule and come catch a game, and see why they are two of the reasons I love where we live!

Lassen Family Services Announces Winner of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Poster Contest
Lassen Family Services announced Monday that Morgan Merrill submitted the winning entry in the organization’s Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month poster contest.
When LFS asked Morgan why she wanted to participate her response was, “…because I am very involved in the community. I had the opportunity to dance at Dancing for a Brand New Me as a backup dancer this year. Being a part of this event allowed me to see how much this community cares about others who need our help, but don’t always ask.
Merrill’s theme for the poster entry was Growing Healthy Relationships.
“I enjoyed this chance to depict what a friendship-based relationship should consist of; fun activities that bring two people closer together.”

BLM Schedules Additional Meeting on
Solar Changes Due to Public Interest
Due to substantial public interest, the Bureau of Land Management has added one more virtual session to its series of public scoping meetings seeking input on potential changes to its solar energy program.
In total the BLM will have hosted fifteen meetings, both virtual and in person, to solicit feedback on its recently announced intent to update the programmatic environmental impact statement for the BLM’s utility-scale solar energy planning. BLM also welcomes written comments.
| |
|
While feedback is welcome on all aspects of the Notice of Intent, the BLM is especially interested to hear comments related to solar energy development in southern California and southern Nevada, given specific expressed interest in the program in those areas.
The newly added virtual session will be held via Zoom on February 14th, 2023, from 9:00 until 11:30a.m. Pacific Standard Time. Pre-registration is required. Click here.
The BLM is considering updates to its 2012 Western Solar Plan that included six southwestern states – Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah – and is seeking comment regarding expanding its solar planning to include five additional states: Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming.
The Notice of Intent to update the BLM’s 2012 solar programmatic environmental impact statement was published in the Federal Register on December 8, 2022, with interested parties invited to submit written feedback or to participate in one of the in-person or virtual public scoping meetings.
The public comment period opened on December 8th, 2022 and will remain open until March 1st, 2023, which is 15 days after the last public scoping meeting. Click here for the most recent information on these meetings.
