By Marshel Couso

Welcome to our weekly feature dedicated to covering Susanville and Lassen County’s business scene! Grand openings, new employees, renovations, new hours… each week we’ll keep you up to date with important information about the businesses you rely on.

Ken’s Repair Service

Ken’s Repair Service has been taking care of local folk’s appliances since the early 1980’s and after being employed at Ken’s for over twenty years as a technician, Richard Reid is now the proud owner of the business, which features repair and service for a wide variety of appliance brands and models.

Their motto? We’re here because you broke something!

“We are committed to keeping your appliances running smoothly,” explains Reid.

“We are so excited to continue into the new year with our amazing team and amazing customers old and new.”

Reid added that efforts made in the last year to boost business, including a new website and expanding their service areas into Portola and Quincy, have shown definite results.

The new website is now live and you can click here to visit.

“We are so proud that we’ve come this far and would like to thank our customers for their unrelenting support of our shop! Without the support of the community we would never have been able expand this fast and we have no intentions of slowing down.”

You can find Ken’s at 2011 Main Street in Susanville.

Rite Aid

The Rite Aid Pharmacy store in Susanville will be closing their doors for good on January 22nd. According to pharmacy staff, all prescriptions will be transferred to the Susanville Walgreens Pharmacy on that day.

If you would like your prescriptions sent to a different pharmacy you, or your provider, must contact the Rite Aid Pharmacy prior to the 22nd, after that date you will have to contact Walgreens to have it transferred elsewhere.

Rite Aid will have some items on sale for 50 to 75% off until they close.

Along with the artwork, submissions must include a short paragraph on why you chose to participate and to explain your concept.

The art piece also must incorporate some specific text – Teen Dating Awareness Month, February 2024 “Love Like That” – that must be easily read from a distance. You can click here to download complete rules and information.

The concept and images for the artwork should be based on the benefits of healthy relationships, which are the focus of the contest. Only original artwork will be considered.

All entries will be reviewed by Lassen Family Services’ Board of Directors to pick the winning design in two categories: Category One for grades 6 to 8, ages 11 to 13 and category two for High School and College students ages 14 to 20.

The competition will be judged on the marketability of piece to multiple audiences, the creativity and originalality of the artwork and idea, attractiveness in terms of design and the neatness of the layout. Art will also be judged on its overall impact.

The winner for each category will receive cash prize of $250.

The view from Antelope Grade looking down towards

Hidden Valley in 1946 from the Eastman Collection at UC Davis

Walter Long Goes Off Antelope Grade

January 11, 1920

Last Monday, while on his way north with Uncle Sam’s mail Walter Long, driver of the stage, met with one of the old-time accidents for which the Antelope Grade north of town was famous.

His team was acting badly, and one of the horses went off the grade taking the entire outfit with him.

Walter was pitched out when the stage upset and received severe bruises about the head.

The stage turned over several times and the horses were piled in a heap.

Fortunately, the damage, considering the nature of the accident and the place where it occurred, was comparatively slight, and Walter has been going about as usual, but with his head pretty heavily bandaged.
