Lassen High School in the late 1930’s.

Winter Carnival at High School Gym January 12

January 1, 1939

Here’s a bit of pleasing information for the winter sports enthusiast. On January 12, Lassen Union High School and Junior College is sponsoring a winter sports carnival and dance.

For the occasion, the gym will be remodeled to resemble a miniature Swiss Chalet of the Alps, and will be lavishly decorated to represent the winter season.

As for the main feature of the dance, “Sonja Henie” will be featured in some novelty skating acts. Since she could not bring her troupe, such girls as Virginia Timmons, Joanne McMurphy, Mary Alice Holmes, Bonnie Flagg, Madeline Gravier, Nancy Oliver, and Noma Short have kindly consented to submit their talents on skates.

However, this won’t be the only entertainment. Tom Burrows will serenade us on his accordion singing and dancing acts will be presented by the most talented pupils on the campus.

A carnival king and queen will be elected by the high school and junior college student bodies. Each of the winners of these coveted awards will receive a ski sweater of the very best quality. Anyone can vote and as many times as they want. Votes will sell for 21/2 cents apiece.

A movie will be held next Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 featuring the Winter Olympics of 1936 and the winter sports in Yosemite. Admission will be 10 cents, and they will be shown in the physiology laboratory.

The admission price entitles you to a vote for king and queen also, so come and see a good movie and vote for your favorite.

Music will be furnished for dancing by “Hans” Dumont and his ski rangers. You can buy bids for 50 cents which admits a stag or a couple. Everyone is invited so, let’s make this dance and winter carnival put Susanville on the map for winter sports.
