Celebrating 100 Years: Lassen College Holds Convocation Activities
Faculty, staff and Administration at Lassen Community College celebrated the institution’s 100th anniversary Tuesday as part of convocation activities to kick off the 2025 Spring Semester.
The college began in 1925 when the Junior College Department of Lassen High School was established. A separate facility was created in 1941 with the remodeling of a Main Street garage into a classroom building.
In 1945, because of increasing enrollment, a new building was built adjacent to the high school.
Lassen entered its modern era in March 1965 when it established the Lassen Community College district and separated from the high school.
The new campus on Highway 139 was dedicated in September of 1971.

Why We Love This Place Wednesday: Hometown Hero Jessica Miller
By Terra Avilla
Picture this: A crisp Wednesday morning, sunlight streaming through the IGA’s windows, my daughters ramming the shopping cart into my heels as I stand at the bakery counter… and there’s Jessica Miller – my hometown hero – bustling around like a whirlwind of energy and warmth, smiling as she pops in and out of the registers to greet customers.
One moment she’s helping an elderly customer reach the top shelf, the next she’s chatting with a local about this season’s best produce.
| |
|
Between managing the store, chasing her adorable kids, and being an active Rotarian, she makes superhero moms look like amateurs.
It almost makes me forget about the throbbing in the back of my calves from where the shopping cart hit.
Its very clear that she’s not your typical grocery store owner. With a smile that could light up Main Street and a heart bigger than the produce section, Jessica has transformed our local IGA into something magical – I literally think of that place as part grocery store, and part community living room.
Sure, she’s Tod Eid’s daughter – and anyone who knows our town knows that’s big shoes to fill. But Jessica? She’s becoming a local icon in her own right. The way her employees talk about her is a testament to what type of leader/owner she is.
Anyone who has been in the town knows how much IGA helps our little corner of the world. Food drives, little league sponsorships, supporting local farmers – Jessica doesn’t just participate in our community; she’s goes out there and does her part to make it better.
Young, passionate, and wickedly smart – Jessica represents the best of our new generation of community leaders. Walk into our IGA, and you’ll feel it immediately. It’s warm. It’s welcoming. It’s personal.
Our IGA isn’t just a store. It’s a business with love and care at his forefront and with the help of Jessica, its one of the reasons I love where we live.

Show Someone How Much You
Appreciate Them with a Bucket of Hearts
Who doesn’t love to appreciate somebody, or be appreciated? For the month of February, the Lassen County Probation Department’s Appreciation Hearts fundraiser will give community members a chance to send a ‘bucket of hearts’ to a person, group or business they appreciate, while contributing to a great cause!
The staff at the Probation Department get the fun job of delivering the big bucket of appreciation to lucky recipients.
The Probation Department has two teams competing to see who can raise the most money. On the line is lunch from Chief Branning.
Just pick a team, make your contribution and your hearts will be delivered! If a $25 or more donation is made, that person will also receive a sweet treat!
| |
|
Click here for Cupid’s Crew or click here for the Smitten Squad.
Select donate, select the donation amount, select the team member you want to support (if you have one), enter YOUR NAME in the from box (this is how the display sign will read) and enter WHO and WHERE you want the bucket to go to in the message box.
If the delivery will be going to someone’s house just put the name in the GiveButter message, and the Probation staff will reach out to you to obtain the address privately.
You can also send hearts to a group of people! The Probation folks love going to businesses! The donation amount will determine how many sweet treats go out with group buckets.
Send a bucket to kids at school or their teacher, just ask and they will take care of it.
In addition to the online donations, cash payments are also accepted at 2950 Riverside Drive in Susanville. If you pay in cash you avoid the fees that GiveButter charges.
Delivery is only available in Lassen County.

Citizens Utilities Company Installs First IMTS Set
January 29, 1971
Gary Shaffer, an employee of the Eagle Lake Lumber Co., is shown testing the improved mobile telephone which was installed in his pickup by the Citizens Utilities Co. on Tuesday. Looking on is L. D. Donaldson, technician with the Susanville office of Citizens Utilities.
The IMTS installation in the Eagle Lake Lumber Co. pickup was the first made in the Susanville area. The IMTS equipment was installed in the Susanville office at a cost of approximately $15,000 plus about $1,500 for each set to be installed.
It is anticipated that approximately 30 sets will soon be on the air. There are presently seven sets in this area based on the Citizens Utilities station in Alturas and these will all be converted to the Susanville station in the near future.
G. F. Watson, Susanville district manager for Citizens Utilities, says the equipment is the most modern mobile telephone equipment available and provides the ability to dial and receive calls direct from the customer’s car. Additional crystals are available to provide coverage for areas other than Susanville if the customer desires a broader range. For customers who wish the equipment can be installed so that the vehicle horn will sound to signal that someone is calling.
