CSEA Regional Representative Deborah Smith and Lassen County Superintendent of Schools Patricia Gunderson – photos provided

Lassen Office of Education Honored with ‘Super Star Award’ from CSEA

The California School Employees Association has recognized the Lassen County Office of Education with the 2024 Super Star Award for Most Honorable.

The award was presented by CSEA Regional Representative Deborah Smith to Patricia Gunderson, Lassen County Superintendent of Schools, during a recent visit to Susanville.

“This prestigious recognition highlights the Lassen County Office of Education’s dedication to fostering a supportive and collaborative environment for classified school employees and the broader educational community,” explains LCOE Communications Specialist Kaitlyn Midgely.

CSEA, established in 1927 by Oakland custodians seeking retirement benefits, is now the largest classified school employees union in the United States, representing nearly 250,000 school support staff across California. Its members play an indispensable role in public schools and community colleges.

“It is an incredible honor to accept this award on behalf of the Lassen County Office of Education,” said Gunderson. “This recognition reflects the hard work and commitment of our entire team and their dedication to creating a positive impact for students, staff, and the community.”

“CSEA continues to uphold its mission to improve the lives of members, students, and communities across the state. The Lassen County Office of Education is proud to stand alongside CSEA in advancing the goals of public education and supporting the vital work of classified employees.”

Cal-FIRE to Host Tribal Wildfire

Resilience Grant Workshop

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection will host an online Tribal Engagement Roundtable Workshop and invite participants to share their feedback and suggestions for the upcoming Tribal Wildfire Resilience Grant solicitation process.

Those encouraged to participate include Tribes, cultural practitioners, native-serving nonprofits, tribal governments, intertribal organizations, current grantees, future applicants, and other native-led organizations working in land management, cultural fire, and fire.

The workshop will provide a forum for Tribes, cultural practitioners, and native-serving nonprofits to share their input to improve our support and program for tribes in land management, Traditional Ecological Knowledge and wildfire resiliency.

A total of $5 million in grant funding will be available. Cal-FIRE is committed to supporting tribes and tribal non-profits who plan or carry out projects that focus on fuels reduction, cultural fire, environmental compliance, workforce training, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, land stewardship, reforestation, and other related efforts.

Cal-FIRE Tribal Liaison, Deputy Director Helen Lopez, will provide opening remarks. There will be presentations from Cal-FIRE staff on the current solicitation draft process, specific topics on which Tribal Wildfire Resilience particularly requests feedback, stakeholder discussion, and opportunities for questions and answers.

The 2025 TWR solicitation will be the second time Cal-FIRE has held a solicitation for TWR-specific funding. In 2023, $19 million in funding was awarded to 12 projects. In 2024, $6.7 million was awarded to five projects in partnership with California Natural Resource Agency’s Tribal Nature-Based Solutions solicitation.

The workshop will be held Tuesday, January 7th, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., online via Teams.

To register, please follow this link. Once registered, the video link and call-in number will be emailed to you.

Draft grant guidelines, the link to the online round table, and additional information will be posted on the Tribal Wildfire Resilience Grants website. The TWR application window is expected to open in late January 2025.

Town Hall Formally Opened

January 6, 1924

Visitors are entertained and shown through new city building. Susanville’s new town hall was officially opened to the public last Sunday afternoon and a good sized attendance enjoyed the entertainment that was given and appreciated the warm welcome that was extended by the reception committee.

Approximate cost is $35,000. The new town hall which is located on Lassen Street is a concrete reinforced building and cost approximately $35,000 to erect. Its wooden joists are the only things which keep it out of class A buildings. Woodward & Greebe were the lowest bidders for the contract and will without expense to the town make good all defects which might occur in material or workmanship for one year.

The clerk’s room is a small office at the entrance to the building and in this is a good sized built safe. The council room is on the same floor and is a space 33 feet by 19 feet 6 inches, equipped with large desk, table and revolving chairs on a platform for juries.

On the same floor is also the engine room where the hook and ladder machine is kept. This room is 14×50 feet.

Well equipped quarters. The quarters upstairs are comfortable and well equipped. They consist of the engineer’s suite composed of bedroom, living room, dining room, kitchen, bath and laundry. The living room has a wall bed in it.

In the volunteer firemen’s quarters there are three bedrooms which can accommodate six firemen. The usual brass pole starts up here and as usual ends at the bottom.

In the basement are the fire alarm apparatus and the heating system. The latter is of the hot water type and is such that it can heat the building to a temperature of 70 degrees with the thermometer at 10 degrees below zero outside. The oil for the heating plant is in a concrete tank of more than 3000 gallons capacity and is outside the building underground.

The fire apparatus is operated by steam and pressure and is connected up with the different fire alarm boxes throughout the town.

A fifteen-second getaway. The volunteer firemen showed the visitors what they could do in a quick getaway. A false alarm was turned in and the boys were off and on their way in fifteen seconds. Fast work.

My wife texted me this morning and said, “Your great.” I replied, “No, you’re great.” She’s been in a wonderful mood ever since…

I should correct her grammar more often!
