Why We Love This Place

Wednesday: Looking Ahead at 2025

By Terra Avilla

As we step into 2025, our beloved Lassen County continues to shine with that small-town charm we’ve always cherished, while now embracing new developments that promise to make our community even more vibrant.

There’s something magical about the way the morning mist rises over our rolling hills, isn’t there? It’s a sight that never fails to remind us why we call this place home.

whywelovefeatureblock image

Let’s raise our coffee mugs (or maybe something stronger) to the long-awaited purchase of the Roseberry House. Finally, this local landmark has found a new caretaker, ensuring its place in our county’s rich tapestry for years to come.

As we watch the lights flicker on in those old windows, we’re not just seeing a house come back to life – we’re witnessing the preservation of our shared history. Who knows, maybe we’ll finally solve the mystery of why it took so long to sell – perhaps the ghosts were picky about their new roommates?

Speaking of cultural treasures, the Susanville Performing Arts Center is hitting all the right notes as it continues to grow. The Sierra Theatre, once facing an uncertain future, is now poised to become a hub for arts, entertainment, and community gatherings. It’s more than just a building; it’s a promise of countless memories waiting to be made. Just imagine the talent we’ll discover among our neighbors – who knew Old Joe from the hardware store could belt out show tunes like that?

Before we know it, Spring will return, and the familiar sound of “Play ball!” will echo across our fields once again. Susanville Little League is gearing up for another season of America’s favorite pastime, as is softball (can you believe that time is already here?) Right now, basketball is in full swing as well as the return of life in the Vets Hall with Best of Broadway practices beginning this week!

Our community calendar will soon be bursting with events that showcase the best of Lassen County. From the toe-tapping tunes of the Bluegrass Festival in June to the thrills of the Lassen County Fair in July, to every Chamber Mixer along the way, there’s something for everyone.

As we ushered in the new year, we also welcomed a new chapter in our county’s leadership. We bid a fond farewell to Richard Egan, whose decades of service as our County Administrative Officer left an indelible mark on our community.

Now, with a new CEO at the helm, we’re excited to see what fresh perspectives and ideas he will bring to our community.

As we look ahead to 2025, it’s clear that Lassen County is growing, and I am so excited for this new chapter and to share it with all of you.

So, here’s to 2025, Lassen County! May our roads be smooth (well, smoother), our events be lively, and our community spirit continue to shine brighter than the stars over Eagle Lake.

After all, why do we love this place? Because it’s ours, quirks and all, and there’s nowhere else we’d rather be. In every friendly wave, every community gathering, and beautiful sunrise over Ranch Park. We’re reminded that we’re part of something truly special.

Lassen County isn’t just where we live – it’s who we are and its why I love where we live.

Calling All Young Artists: LFS Holding Teen Dating Violence Awareness Art Contest

Lassen Family Services, a local agency committed to ending abuse in our community, is hosting a Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month art contest with $50 cash prizes for the winning artists in two categories.

Entry into the contest is free and limited to one submission per artist.

Along with the artwork, submissions must include a short paragraph on why you chose to participate and to explain your concept.

teendatingcontest2025 image

The art piece also must incorporate some specific text – Teen Dating Awareness Month, February 2025 “Respect That” – that must be easily read from a distance. You can click here to download complete rules and information.

The concept and images for the artwork should be based on the benefits of healthy relationships, and in relation to the theme. The theme “Respect That” highlights the importance of treating partners with dignity, listening to their viewpoints, respecting their boundaries, and valuing their autonomy by focusing on “respect.”

Only original artwork will be considered.

All entries will be reviewed by Lassen Family Services’ Board of Directors to pick the winning design in two categories: Category One for grades 6 to 8, ages 11 to 13 and category two for High School students ages 14 to 17.

The competition will be judged on the marketability of piece to multiple audiences, the creativity and originalality of the artwork and idea, attractiveness in terms of design and the neatness of the layout. Art will also be judged on its overall impact.

Deadline for submissions is January 24th, at 11:59p.m. For questions, please send an email to angela.reed@lassenfamilyservices.org.

January 8, 1971

Construction progress at the new Lassen College, located on Highway 139, approximately one mile north of the City of Susanville, was viewed recently by college officials, and manager of the Susanville District, Bureau of Land Management.
