Adopt A Pet Today from the
Lassen County Animal Shelter – Lena
Lena is still with us and looking for a home. Are you in the market for a cuddle partner? Maybe someone that enjoys nice walks and will fetch a tennis ball for you? Then Lena is your girl!

Lena is an 8 year old sweetheart looking for her forever home. She smiles big and loves hard. Toss her a tennis ball and watch as she delights in chewing on it over and over and over again. Miss Lena came to the Lassen County Animal Shelter as a stray and she’s so through with hanging out in the noisy kennels.
She’s ready for a rug to lay on and a person to lounge on the couch with. More evaluations need to be done to determine how Lena is with other dogs and cats but so far she has yet to show aggression towards anyone.

Lena is spayed and microchipped. If interested in meeting Lena, please call shelter staff at (530) 257-9200 or come down for a visit. The shelter is located off Johnstonville Rd, next to the Susanville Airport. To view other adoptable animals, check out petfinder.com.
Featured animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter are available for adoption on a first-come-first-serve basis. According to California law, all adoptable dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered before leaving our facility. If interested in adopting an animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Current shelter hours during the COVID-19 pandemic are Monday through Friday, 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday. You can contact the shelter at 257-9200.

City Council Weighs Options as
CCC 2023 Closure Appears Inevitable
The Susanville City Council met in closed session on July 6th, to discuss existing litigation related to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s announced closure of the California Correctional Center by June 26th, 2023.

According to City Administrator Dan Newton, at the end of June, in a last-minute trailer bill to the Governor’s Budget, Penal Code was modified to allow the arbitrary closure of CCC by June of 2023, taking away the right of citizens to have any voice in the selection of a prison for closure and eliminating any environmental review prior to closing any prisons or juvenile facilities.
“When the State got caught not following the laws, it decided to just change the law, instead of doing what was right. Anyone who understands what the state has done should be in awe of the state’s blatant disregard for what is fair and just,” said Newton.

At the July 6th, meeting the Susanville City Council directed staff to ‘continue to explore legal mechanisms to keep the facility open and operational, while simultaneously working to open a dialog with state representatives regarding the future of the facility.’

“The city remains extremely concerned for the employees at CCC who are struggling through the uncertainty of this situation and also for the economic impact the proposed closure will have on our community.”

Susanville Mayor Quincy McCourt added that, “The city’s whole focus has been on protecting our citizens, valuable jobs and this amazing community.”

“When the system we rely on has too many angles and creates loopholes to justify and defend its behavior, the law loses its point. Locally a main priority is looking out for those who have made Lassen County their home and of those who wish to remain. We will maintain focus and explore all options.”

Lassen County Free From Alfalfa Pest
July 11, 1924

Entomologist Enow of the United States Department of agriculture has just completed a survey of Honey Lake valley for alfalfa weevil, but he was unable to find any trace of the pest. In addition to this, the county horticultural commissioner has swept a large number of fields adjacent to campgrounds and other places where it was feared the weevil might have gained entrance.

Hundreds of weevil have been taken by the inspectors at Doyle and Chilicoot from tourists traveling from Nevada into California. There is little doubt but what weevil would have reached the valley before this time had not the inspection been carried on.

At present, there are two inspectors on the Red Rock road leading to Reno, one inspector on the Constantia lane leading from Constantia to the Red Rock road and two inspectors at Chilicoot. Of these, the inspectors on the Red Rock road and those on the Chilicoot road are maintained by the state.

The inspector at the Constantia lane is maintained by Lassen County.
