Why We Love This Place Wednesday:
Miss Lassen County Chalise Robbins
By Terra Avilla
Chalise Robbins, our reigning Miss Lassen County, embodies the spirit of community service that makes our county so special. Crowned in 2023, this one of a kind, seventeen-year-old has been making waves and warming hearts throughout her reign.
She clearly has a passion for helping others and making a difference in the community. For example, Chalise has spent the last year spending countless hours to church activities.

|
|
Her tireless commitment to faith-based programs – from running food drives to working with the youth group – exemplifies the strength of her own faith.
You go to any social event and there she is with that iconic smile, but my favorite place to see Chalise is at the pool. This is because she teaches swimming to children. The kids love her, and she loves them.
Chalise has a talent for reassuring nervous beginners. I know this, because Peach was one of them. She develops a good rapport with the kids, and she smiles all the way through the class. You would never guess how young she is. She is genuinely devoted to making their time in the water as fun as possible.
Though her reign is almost complete, Chalise is still helping and is volunteering to help the current Miss Lassen County competitors for their upcoming pageant. I personally have seen her at the practices, just as bubbly and kind as can be.
A special shout-out goes to the entire Miss Lassen County court for their year-long dedication to serving the community. Alongside Chalise, Princess Sofia Bennett and Ambassadress Hayley Trevizu have been amazing community champions throughout this incredible journey.
Together, they have represented Lassen County with grace and enthusiasm, participating in various community events and leaving a positive impact wherever they went. Their commitment to service and their support for one another have truly exemplified the spirit of the Miss Lassen County program.
As a mother to three little girls, I cannot think of three “big” girls that are better role models for my daughters. I don’t say that lightly.
Please come and support the Miss Lassen County pageant tonight (Wednesday) at the Lassen County Fair. It is a great opportunity to get out and support our local young women and to witness the passing of the crown.
Anyone who witnessed the excellence of Chalise Robbins in winning the $1,000 scholarship and the year of service she has been called to believes that the bar has been set high.
I hope you will join us in celebrating her accomplishments and the naming of next year’s Miss Lassen County.

LL&TT Farm to Table Event Set for
August 17th at Mountain Meadow Ranch
Lassen Land and Trails Trust has announced that the 7th annual Farm to Table Dinner fundraiser will be held at 5:00p.m., on August 17th, at Mountain Meadow Ranch on Wingfield Road, featuring a magical evening of farm fresh cuisine prepared by Chef Tim Keesey.
“This picturesque evening is generously hosted by Mountain Meadow Ranch, a beautiful rural gem that traditionally served as a Maidu hunting camp, first developed into the ranch seen today by George Wingfield in 1902,” explains Farm to Table organizer Amy Holmen.
| |
|
|
“Today Mountain Meadow Ranch is lovingly owned and run by the Ellena Family, who have run a well-loved summer camp on the grounds since 1956. Established by Jack Ellena Sr, the stewardship of the land and summer camp was assumed by his son Chip and his wife Jody.”
“Today, Chip and Judy’s two daughters and their families maintain the traditions and care instituted by Jack Sr., including the values of Servant Leadership within the camp; this is inspired by the Mountain Maidu’s “Serve All” mentality and includes stewardship, true listening, integrity, and inclusivity.”
The annual Farm to Table event includes an hors d’oeuvres hour, followed by an intimate three course meal paired with fine wines. The three-course meal in the idyllic setting of Mountain Meadows Ranch will showcase locally raised beef and mouthwatering fresh-seasonal vegetables.
Tickets are $150 each and the event has limited capacity and always sells out. Tickets are available online at or in-person at Every Bloomin’ Thing, Margie’s Book Nook and The Golden Poppy Café.
“Lassen Land and Trails Trust gives its heartfelt thanks to the many volunteers and generous donations of individuals and businesses that support this event and the numerous projects of Lassen Land and Trails Trust. This year we are proud to have Cooper-Garrod Estate Vineyards and Sierra Cascade Nursery as returning sponsors of this special evening. The evenings’ annual auction will include donated spirits and other unique items- all proceeds of the auction contribute to the important fundraising that supports the Land Trusts’ initiatives.”
If you have any questions, or your business would like to sponsor this event, please contact the Land Trust at 1.530.257.3252.

Public Notice: Lassen High District’s Commitment to Nutrition Access
The Lassen Union High School District is pleased to share the following public notice announcing great news for the district’s commitment to nutrition access for all.
Lassen Community Day School and Credence Continuation High School will continue to participate in the Community Eligibility Provision program under the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program for the 2024-2025 school year at both school sites.
| |
|
|
Effective July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025, all students attending school at Lassen Community Day School or Credence Continuation High School are eligible to receive a nutritious breakfast and lunch at no charge.
Schools participating in the Community Eligibility Provision program do not collect meal benefit applications to determine categorical eligibility for free, reduced-price, or paid student meals. This approach reduces the burden for families and school administrators, and helps ensure that students receive nutritious meals.
For more information regarding the program, contact Cori Shields at cori.shields@lassenhigh.org; 530-251-1194; or LUHSD, Attention CEP Information Request, 1000 Main Street, Susanville, CA 96130.

CONTINUOUS EARTHQUAKES
Seismic Earthquakes Render Susanville Anything but Terra Firma
July 17, 1889
Slight earthquake shocks have been so continuous at Susanville in the Sierra Nevadas that the people have become accustomed to the constant trembling of the earth that they pay no attention to it.
Susanville lies on a high mountain-walled valley directly east of Lassen Butte, an extinct volcano 10,600 feet high. From its summit no less than forty extinct craters can be seen.
Cinder Cone, which rises 600 feet above the level of the plateau, was in eruption in 1850. Two prospectors visited it, and they found Lake Salfatra, eight miles south of Cinder Cone, a center of volcanic forces.
The lake was a mass of boiling water and mud, and from it vast columns of flames shot up at intervals. Timber in the vicinity was on fire.
Within two years there has seemed renewed activity in the internal fire, and the present shocks point to the possibility of another great volcanic outburst which will find vent through some of the craters.
