Why We Love This Place Wednesdays: Lassen County 4H |

It’s Fair Week You’all! One of my most favorite weeks of the year for an array of reasons. The most notable being that it is the time of year when our county comes together and celebrates our wonderful community and the people within it. All while our children run rampant, giggling, with corn dogs and cotton candy.
Yes, the fair brings vendors, rides, concerts, and this year a wrestling extravaganza, but it also consistently brings out the wonderful animals and challenging work of our local 4H.

Prior to moving to Lassen County, I had no idea what 4H was, what they did, how to join etc. It took a very short time being in Lassen County for me to be acquainted with many people who do 4H. And I can tell you what a wonderful thing for our youth, but also for our community.
According to 4H’s website they provide “experiences where young people learn by doing. For more than 100 years, 4H has welcomed young people of all beliefs and backgrounds, giving kids a voice to express who they are and how they make their lives and communities better.”
In our community our 4H community “kids and teens complete hands-on projects” such as raising and caring for various animals, in an “environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles.”
These kiddos and teens take pride in their animals, caring for them for months leading up to fair. At fair they will be judged on their showmanship as well as the animal itself. And these kids and teens take so much care and pride in their animals, from bunnies to chickens to goats, and cows (and I’m sure so much more); you see them in their iconic outfit-with their smiles beaming.
They take so much pride in competing at the fair, and as someone who has experienced eleven fairs – every year I become more and more familiar with the smiling faces in the barns and in the arena.
As a school resource officer, but also as a mother and member of the community, I can tell you we as a community should be very thankful for this program, instilling responsibility, community, dedication, and teamwork into our youth. Also, I think I would be remiss about mentioning the actual therapeutic portions of caring for a living being.
If you have never taken a gander in the stalls at Fair, I highly encourage you to do so. Tell the 4H members in there (who stand by all week!), hello – and I’m certain they would be more than happy to discuss 4H, or their animals with you.
It is a wonderful program with wonderful people in it. Happy Fair week my community, go out and enjoy one of the very best reasons I love where we live!

Writer’s Group Hosting Music and Poetry This Afternoon in Janesville |
The Thompson Peak Writer’s Group will be presenting an afternoon of Poetry and Music today beginning at 3:00 in Janesville, featuring poet Phoebe Reeves and the musical stylings of ‘No Consolation’.

Phoebe Reeves earned an MFA in poetry at Sarah Lawrence College and is Professor of English at the University of Cincinnati.

Her chapbook The Gardener and the Garden was published in 2019 and her book Helen of Bikini is forthcoming from Lily Poetry. Her poems have appeared in The Gettys-burg Review, Grist, Forklift OH, and The Chattahoochee Review.
No Consolation

Lassen National Forest
Implements Fire Restrictions
|
Due to current fuel conditions and upward trending weather observations, Lassen National Forest has implemented forest-wide fire restrictions on lands administered by the Forest. The Forest Service consulted with Cal-FIRE Lassen-Modoc Unit, Bureau of Land Management, and Modoc National Forest on the implementation of these restrictions to reduce fire activity and protect the local communities.
Fire restrictions enhance public safety, protect natural and cultural resources, and help prevent human-caused fires.

Several criteria are used to determine when to implement fire restrictions, including fire activity levels, current and predicted weather, fuel moisture, and the availability of firefighting resources. Additional restrictions may be required if conditions warrant.
These fire restrictions will remain in effect across Lassen National Forest until September 30th, 2022, or until rescinded, whichever occurs first.
As of Tuesday, the following restrictions apply:
- Open fires are prohibited outside of designated, developed campgrounds and camp sites, even with a valid California campfire permit. Designated Recreation Sites (see exhibit A of Forest Order 06-22-04) that are exempted from fire restrictions are exempted because fuel management in these areas decrease the likelihood of fire starting and its transfer to wildland.
- Smoking is prohibited except within an enclosed vehicle, building or designated recreation site.
- Operating an external combustion engine, except a motor vehicle, is prohibited outside designated recreation sites.
- Motor vehicles are allowed only on established Forest System roads, trails or within designated recreation sites.
- Welding and operating acetylene or other torches with an open flame is prohibited.
- Please call (530) 257-9553 for an up-to-date wood cutting status before you leave to harvest fuelwood.
- Visitors may use stoves, grills ,and lanterns fueled by propane or other liquid petroleum gas (LPG) fuels that meet manufacturer’s safety specifications. If you plan to visit the forest, be sure to practice One Less Spark vehicle safety guidelines by securing chains, checking tire pressure and properly maintaining your brakes.

Everyone is welcome to stop by, browse, and take clothing.

Army of 1,500 Guards Town In Danger Of Fire
Susanville In Momentary Peril From Flames; Four Homes Go; Stores, Mills Close
July 20, 1924
An army of 1,500 men is camped about the city limits of Susanville tonight, guarding the town against destruction by forest fire, threatened throughout the day.
All business houses and the two large lumber mills were closed today as the flames entered the city limits and destroyed four houses. All available men joined the fight.
For hours this afternoon the residents were in momentary fear that the entire town would be wiped out.
A solid wall of flame hovered at the edge of the Lassen county metropolis.
The blare of fire whistles from the lumber mills called out all workers, and businessmen also rushed to the scene of the blaze.
Fire at Hospital
Patients were removed from the county hospitals when the fire, a menace to the city Sunday, again broke from control this morning and showered sparks about the building. As the flames crept into the hospital year 15 men and women inmates were taken to the Riverside hospital in the eastern part of Susanville.
Westwood sent 50 men and equipment to assist on checking the fire.
The flames crossed the right of way of the Southern Pacific railroad but trains went through on schedule.
After being brought partially under control last night, the fire flared up anew at about noon, sweeping everything before it for a stretch of three miles, until it reached the city limits. Hills to the south and southwest of Susanville are covered only with charred stumps of trees.
The houses destroyed were in the Winchester addition n the southern section of the town.
Water Supply Fails
Pumps were used to protect the enormous piles of lumber in the Lassen Lumber and Box company and the Fruit Growers’ Supply company yards. The water was taken from the mill ponds and ditches. In many cases this afternoon, however, the supply was completely depleted.
Where the supply of water ran out, only the chance that sparks failed to fall, saved valuable property in the mills and town.
With the fire line at the city limits, women of Susanville worked this afternoon and evening preparing food for the fighters, who will remain on duty tonight.
A second fire in Lassen County was reported to the Fruit Growers’ Supply company at its camp F, 30 miles northwest of Susanville, toward Redding. The fire is near the highway and burning exceptionally valuable timber. Every available man from the camps has been sent to check on the fire which is reported being swept before a high wind, towards Eagle Lake.
Telephone lines between the camp and Susanville are down and detailed information of the blaze is lacking.
