Adopt A Pet from the Lassen
County Animal Shelter – Clyde

AH-WOOOOO! I’m Clyde, a 2-year-old hound dog with a nose for adventure, a goofy personality, and a heart that’s always looking for new friends. If you’re looking for a dog who can make you laugh just by being himself, I think we should meet.

Like most hounds, I love to follow my nose and explore the world around me. That means I’ll do best with a securely fenced yard or on-leash adventures where I can safely investigate all the exciting sights and smells.

animalshelteradopt image

Hounds are intelligent, affectionate, and incredibly loyal, but we also have an independent streak, sometimes our noses have their own ideas. Keeping my mind busy with walks, sniffing games, and fun activities will help me be my happiest self.

I already know how to sit, I love spending time with people, and I’m always happy to soak up attention from my favorite humans. Whether we’re out exploring a new trail or relaxing together after a day of adventures, I’m happiest when I’m by your side.

If you think your home is ready for a fun-loving, silly, scent-driven companion who will keep you smiling, come meet me. I can’t wait to sniff out my forever family.

Featured animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter are available for adoption on a first-come-first-serve basis. According to California law, all adoptable dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered before leaving our facility. If interested in adopting an animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Current shelter hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday. You can contact the shelter at 530.257.9200.

Register Now for the 12th Annual Courage Triathlon at Lake Almanor

Registration is underway for the 12th Annual Courage Triathlon, an event dedicated to supporting Courage Worldwide, Inc. in its vital mission to rescue, restore, and advocate for child survivors of sex trafficking.

Again this year, the Triathlon is including virtual participation, allowing individuals from across the country to join the movement and make a difference. Whether you’re standing at the start line or lacing up your sneakers a thousand miles away, you’re part of this fight.

couragetriathlon image

Whether you choose to participate solo, as part of a team, or virtually from your own community, every stroke, pedal, and step you take directly benefits Courage Worldwide’s ongoing efforts to provide safe houses and essential resources for these vulnerable children.

The Courage Triathlon will be held August 15th, at 10:00a.m. at the Lake Almanor Country Club (in-person) or virtually (from anywhere!). Activities include a 2.8 Mile Run, a 6.4 Mile Bike ride, and a 3.1 Mile Row/Kayak.

When you cross the finish line — whether that’s at Lake Almanor or at the end of your driveway — you’re telling a survivor that they are seen, they are valued, and they are not alone. Whether you run five miles, paddleboard for two hours, or simply take a walk around your neighborhood and post a photo, your participation amplifies the message of support for child survivors.

Why Participate?

The Courage Triathlon isn’t just about the finish line; it’s about changing lives. Every dollar raised directly funds Courage Worldwide’s efforts to provide residential housing and therapeutic services for child survivors of sex trafficking. By getting involved, you become a crucial part of their journey toward healing and reaching their full potential.

To register as a participant click here.

The Triathlon is actively seeking volunteers, vendors and sponsors to help make the event a success. Your support ensures that every cent raised goes directly to where it’s needed most.

Cooperative Extension Recruiting SNAP Decision-makers for Participatory Research

The University of California Cooperative Extension is recruiting local Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program decision-makers for participatory research aimed at keeping food dollars closer to home.

Each month, nearly $2 million in CalFresh benefits are used across Lassen, Modoc and Siskiyou counties. Even though many local stores and some farmers accept EBT, only a small share of those dollars goes toward locally grown food. This new project hopes to better understand why.

snapsurvey image

Led by the University of California Cooperative Extension, the effort focuses entirely on listening to the community. SNAP participants are invited to share their experiences through 90-minute small group conversations. The goal is to learn what makes it easy—or difficult—for people to buy local food.

“We want to hear directly from community members about what works for them and what would make a difference,” said Laurie Wayne, the UCCE’s Nutrition and Food Systems Advisor for Modoc, Lassen and Siskiyou Counties.

Wayne noted that in rural areas, getting fresh food can take time and travel. At the same time, local farmers are producing food right here in the region. Finding ways to better connect those two pieces could help keep food dollars in the community, support small farms, and make fresh foods more accessible.

Local residents who receive SNAP/CalFresh are encouraged to apply. Participation is completely voluntary, and all conversations will be respectful, confidential, and focused on real-life experiences.

Participants are being selected now. Groups will convene in Susanville in July and August, with more to come, including a Spanish-language group in Tulelake in July. Selected participants will be compensated for their time with a $50 gift card.

Community input from these sessions will be used to develop practical ideas that reflect local needs and realities. Wayne added that the results may also help other rural areas facing similar challenges.

To learn more or sign up to participate, contact Laurie Wayne with UCCE Modoc at lwayne@ucanr.edu, call 1.530.233.6400, or sign up online at https://bit.ly/CalFresh-Research.

Lassen Fire Safe Council Invests Another
$10,000 in Local Fire Science and Forestry Students

The Lassen Fire Safe Council Community Fund has presented another $10,000 check to the Lassen College Foundation & Alumni Association. The funds will directly support scholarships for students enrolled in the college’s Fire Sciences and Forestry programs as part of an ongoing “grow our own” initiative.

The initiative, which initially launched with a $10,000 contribution in 2025, aims to build a robust local workforce by training and retaining professionals who will live and work within Lassen County.

The Community Fund committee, established in December 2023 and chaired by Chevi Amrein, is supported by the sale of unused equipment, small donations, and a portion of the 2021 Dixie Fire PG&E Settlement funds. The council has previously noted that none of the settlement money can be recovered by PG&E in customer rates, ensuring the funds are entirely used for the community’s benefit.

In addition to supporting local education, the LFSC Community Fund continues to assist Lassen County’s 15 volunteer fire departments by offering up to $800 in communication system reimbursements for platforms like IamResponding or Active 911 to improve local dispatch times.

Community members and businesses who wish to join the effort and establish similar scholarships are encouraged to contact LCC Foundation representative Jamie Giles at 1.530.251.8882.

The LFSC welcomes project ideas from its 12 Firewise communities, volunteer fire departments, and all residents to help preserve Northern California’s resources from the effects of wildfires.

Set for Saturday, September 12th, this year’s event promises something for every rider, from seasoned veterans to enthusiastic newcomers.
