Adopt A Pet from the Lassen
County Animal Shelter – Chili
Seeking: One ranch. Endless room to run. A full-time job. Bonus points if you appreciate a little sass.
Hi. I’m Chili… but my friends call me Chili Dog. I’m a gorgeous red Border Collie with a sharp mind, endless ambition, and absolutely zero interest in being a couch potato.
My ideal position includes:
- Acres to roam
- Livestock or a job to do
- Humans who understand working dogs
- Plenty of opportunities to use my brain

Border Collies don’t just want a job, they NEED one. If you’ve got a ranch, farm, or an active lifestyle where I can stay mentally and physically challenged, we’re already speaking the same language.
Now… let’s talk about people. I can be a little anxious when meeting someone new. I like to take a moment to decide if you’re trustworthy. But once I know you’re one of the good ones? Oh, I’m all in. I absolutely love being loved on, soaking up affection, and spending time with my favorite humans.
And about that leash… I wasn’t exactly thrilled when the shelter introduced me to one. Frankly, I’d rather be free to do my job. But to appease the humans, I learned to walk on it anyway. See? I’m adaptable… when I feel like it.
I’m smart, driven, loyal, and full of personality. Give me purpose, patience, and a little understanding, and I’ll become the kind of partner you’ll wonder how you ever lived without.
So, if you’re looking for a dog to lounge around all day… keep scrolling.
But if you’re searching for a hardworking ranch hand with a soft side, a brilliant mind, and just enough sass to keep you humble…

Featured animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter are available for adoption on a first-come-first-serve basis. According to California law, all adoptable dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered before leaving our facility. If interested in adopting, please call the shelter directly.
Current shelter hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday. You can contact the shelter at 1.530.257.9200.

Bicycle Association Contributes Public Bike
Repair Stands at Two Local Trailheads
Local cyclists have a new reason to celebrate as the Susanville Area Bicycle Association continues working to improve our local trail experience. Board members Aaron Johnson, Mark Kovacic and Randy Robbins recently spent the day installing a high-quality public bike repair stand at the Historic Railroad Depot, with another stand planned for Susanville Ranch Park in the near future.
The depot repair stand was installed this week in cooperation with Lassen Land and Trails Trust and is already fully operational and ready for public use at the Bizz Johnson Trailhead. The second repair stand will be set up at the main parking area at Susanville Ranch Park soon.
Equipped with all common bike repair tools, these heavy-duty stations allow trail users to make quick adjustments, pump up tires, or handle minor fixes right at the trailhead.
SABA expressed enthusiasm for the new additions, noting that the organization is excited to contribute to our amazing local trail system by providing these high-quality repair stands to help keep riders safe and on the trails.

Supervisor Ingram Collecting School Supplies for 5th District Students
Lassen County District 5 Supervisor Jason Ingram is calling on the community for help as he kicks off the 10th Annual Backpack Drive to gather essential school supplies for students in the Doyle, Milford and Herlong areas.
The annual effort provides local youth with the tools they need for a successful school year, with a focus on delivering supplies directly to schools and families throughout the southernmost part in the county. The district is home to just under 30,000 residents.

“We are always in need of supplies and backpacks for the drive,” Ingram said. “I typically deliver around 100 backpacks between the schools and to people in the South County.”
Organizers are in need of donated school supplies, including backpacks, pencils, crayons and notebooks.
Ingram says that backpacks represent the primary expense for the annual drive, and rising costs have added to the challenge this year. Even when purchased in bulk, the cost of backpacks has increased by more than $5 each.
“Any and all donations are truly appreciated.” Ingram noted, adding that, “an investment into our youth is an investment into the future of Lassen County!”

Deadline to Enter Plumas-Sierra Ruralite Photo Contest is This Friday
Attention local shutterbugs: the deadline is fast approaching to show off your best shot and potentially land it on the front cover of Ruralite magazine! Plumas-Sierra Rural Electric Cooperative is holding its 2026 Photo Contest, and entries must be submitted by this Friday, July 31st.
Each month, PSREC distributes more than 7,000 copies of Ruralite across Plumas, Sierra, Lassen and Washoe counties. Up to six winning photographs will be selected by an unbiased team of judges at the magazine, with winning shots showcased on a cover. On top of the bragging rights and public exposure, contest winners will receive a $100 credit on their bill.
To be eligible, photographers must be members of PSREC (or own a business served by PSREC or its telecommunications subsidiary), and photos must be taken within the PSREC service area.

Images can feature local people, places, or things from any season, though judges suggest capturing dramatic scenery, seasonal motifs, or local hidden spots while avoiding pet photos. Shooting around sunrise or sunset is recommended for optimal lighting.
Technical requirements specify that photos must be taken in a vertical format and submitted as digital JPEG files that are at least 300 dpi at 9 inches wide by 11 inches tall. Each contestant may submit up to three entries. Photographers can email their entries to marketing@psrec.coop, upload them online at this link or mail them on a CD to the Plumas-Sierra Rural Electric Cooperative Photo Contest, 73233 State Route 70, Portola, CA 96122.
Make sure to include your name, address, member number, email address, phone number, location of the photo, and a brief description with your submission. For email entries, use the phrase “2026 Cover Photo Contest” in the subject line, and ensure the attachment is under 10 megabytes.

Dress Revue Contest Winners
July 27, 1973
DRESS REVUE CONTEST WINNERS—Peggy Carman, right, and Cindy Geissert, left, were the winners of the 1973 Lassen County 4-H Dress Revue held Saturday, July 23rd, at Lassen High School.
Peggy was the senior division winner, modeling a shocking hot pink wool princess line dress with a paisley print neck tie.
Cindy Geissert took top honors in the junior division in her white tennis dress, trimmed in navy.
Peggy Carman will represent Lassen County at the annual State 4-H Dress Revue held on the Davis campus of the University of California.
