Vegetation Fire Near Pat
Murphy Field Quickly Contained
A vegetation fire that broke out Monday evening near Pat Murphy Field was quickly brought under control thanks to a rapid response from the Susanville Fire Department and CalFire.
At approximately 7:38p.m. on June 30th, SFD Engine 621 was dispatched to the area of Pat Murphy Field following reports of a vegetation fire. Upon arrival, crews located the fire burning behind the community garden, near the river.
The fire, estimated to be about 30 feet by 60 feet, exhibited a slow rate of spread through light fuels – mostly grass and sparse brush. However, multiple spot fires were observed extending to the west. Firefighters from both SFD and CalFire worked to halt the fire’s forward progression, preventing it from spreading further. All units then assisted with the mop-up operation.

No injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported. The Susanville Fire Department received support from CalFire and the Susanville Police Department during the incident.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Cal-FIRE Reminds Residents to Keep This Independence Day ‘Safe and Sane’
Cal-FIRE would like to remind all Californians that there is no tolerance when it comes to illegal fireworks. The sale, transport, or use of fireworks without the “Office of the State Fire Marshal Safe and Sane” seal is illegal, as is possessing or using any fireworks in communities where they are not allowed. Violators face potential fines up to $50,000 as well as a year in jail.
“We all must do our part to keep Fourth of July fun and safe. I ask all Californians to use common sense and practice safety when lighting fireworks to celebrate."

"Our message is clear: illegal fireworks won’t be tolerated, and you will be prosecuted. They run the risk of starting dangerous fires in the peak of our fire season,” said Governor Gavin Newsom in a news release distributed this morning.
Over the past several months, Cal-FIRE – Office of the State Fire Marshal’s specialized Arson and Bomb Investigators have been aiding local and federal illegal fireworks enforcement efforts.
Illegal fireworks include:
- Skyrockets
- Bottle rockets
- Roman candles
- Aerial shells
- Firecrackers
- Sparklers
- Other fireworks that explode, go into the air, or move on the ground in an uncontrollable manner.
“Already this year our Arson and Bomb Investigators, along with our partners, have successfully seized over 600,000 pounds of illegal fireworks from all over California,” said State Fire Marshal Daniel Berlant.
“Our recent enforcement efforts clearly demonstrate our zero tolerance toward the use, transportation, and possession of illegal fireworks. Even ‘Safe and Sane’ fireworks are banned in many communities and bring large fines for their illegal use.”
For a fun and safe Fourth of July, know your local fireworks laws. Some California communities ban all fireworks, while others allow certain “Safe and Sane” fireworks.
It is best to leave fireworks to the experts. Attend a professional public display conducted by licensed pyrotechnic operators, certified by Cal-FIRE – Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Ejected Union Crowd Flocks To Susanville
31 Injured When Mob Drives Strikers From Westwood
July 2, 1938
Angered residents of this Red River Lumber Company town tonight dragged suspected C. I. O. members or sympathizers before a kangaroo court for “trial” in continuing a purge which drove scores of strikers from the town.
The little lumber town was in a state of siege after 2,000 men battled each other with clubs, rifles, pick-handles and fists, and 80 C. I. O. men and their families were scattered along the roads out of Westwood.
A group of approximately 100 C. I. O. workers were reported in Susanville Wednesday afternoon, but residents there said they expected no trouble.
At a meeting in the Susanville city hall, a number of citizens pledged their support to the chief of police to aid in preserving order, and a signal to warn the citizens should any trouble arise was chosen.
Rumors that an attempt to picket the Lassen Lumber and Box Company, which obtains logs from Red River company, could not be confirmed.
L. R. Cady, vice-president and manager of the California Utilities Company, reported that no interference with electric service to Westwood or Susanville is expected as a result of the dispute.
Cady, following a conference with T. S. Walker, manager of the Red River Lumber Company at Westwood, reported that Walker had said the strikers had promised not to interfere with electric service.
