Adopt A Pet from the Lassen
County Animal Shelter – Chico
Hi. My name is Chico, and I have a confession to make.
The world is a very big, very scary place.
New people? Scary. New places? Scary.
Strange noises? Definitely scary.
When I first arrived at the shelter, I wasn’t quite sure what to make of anything. But the nice humans here have been patient with me, and little by little I’ve learned that maybe the world isn’t so scary after all.

These days, when I’m with people I trust, a different side of me comes out. I love cuddling up close, claiming a warm lap as my favorite seat in the house, and showing off my zoomies when I’m feeling happy. Once I’m comfortable, I’m a silly little guy with a big heart and lots of love to give.
What I need now is a family willing to give me the same patience the shelter staff did. I may not be the dog who runs up to greet everyone on day one, but if you give me time, kindness, and a chance to build my confidence, I promise you’ll get to see the real me. And the real me?
I’m cuddles.
I’m lap lounging.
I’m happy dances and zoomies.
I’m a loyal little shadow who just needs someone to believe in me.

Featured animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter are available for adoption on a first-come-first-serve basis. According to California law, all adoptable dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered before leaving our facility. If interested in adopting an animal, please contact the shelter directly.
Current shelter hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday. You can contact the shelter at 530.257.9200.

Get Ready to Ride: 42nd Annual Mile High 100 Happens This Saturday at Lake Almanor
Calling all cyclists! The Almanor Recreation and Park District has announced that registration is now open for the iconic Mile High 100 Century Ride, taking place this Saturday, June 20th.
Now in its 42nd year, this beloved tradition invites riders to experience the breathtaking beauty of Lake Almanor, the surrounding Lassen National Forest and the mountain scenery.
Organizers promise this year will be better than ever, featuring freshly paved roads and wider, safer shoulders—particularly along the challenging Johnson Grade—following recent construction on Highway 36.

The ARPD is pulling out all the stops this year to ensure a top-tier experience. Participants can look forward to enhanced rider support, with additional rest stops positioned along the routes to keep you fueled and ready. Additionally, you can celebrate your accomplishment at the finish line with live music.
While you are registering, be sure to check out the fan-favorite Mile High Cycling Jersey, which you can easily add to your order.
For those looking to participate, there are three distinct routes available. The Full Century route covers 102 miles with an elevation gain of 4,026 feet, taking cyclists through Domingo Spring, the Lake Almanor Basin, Westwood, and the Lassen National Forest. It begins at 7:00a.m. and costs $102.43.
The Metric Century offers a 68-mile ride with 2,804 feet of elevation gain, including a full loop around Lake Almanor, the historic town of Westwood, and the Lassen National Forest. This route starts at 8:00a.m. and costs $97.10.
Finally, the Half Metric Century provides a beautiful 33-mile loop around Lake Almanor. Featuring 1,145 feet of elevation gain and amazing views throughout, this route begins at 9:00a.m. and costs $86.45. Please note that all listed prices include applicable fees.

Deadline Extended for Kids and Youth Groups to Help ‘Paint the Fair!’
The Lassen County Fair is looking for creative kids, clubs, classrooms, and youth groups to help brighten up the fairgrounds this summer! The annual “Paint the Fair” contest is officially underway, and the nice folks at the fair say the response has been overwhelming, and they are extending the deadline to July 1st to give everyone a chance to be a part of the fun.
This year’s theme, “Celebrating America: 250 Years of Red, White & You,” offers endless inspiration for participants to show off their community pride and unique group personality.

How to Participate
Stop by the Lassen County Fairgrounds office to pick up a blank wooden star for your group and then decorate the star however you would like! You can paint it, cover it in glitter, collage it with photos or use any craft supplies that represent your group’s unique spirit.
Return your finished masterpiece to the fairgrounds by Wednesday, July 1st.
All decorated stars will be featured in a special community display throughout the run of the 2026 Lassen County Fair, celebrating the creativity and connection of our local youth.

Sign-Up Now for Susanville Salvation Army ‘Back to School’ Clothing Shopping Spree
The Salvation Army of Susanville is gearing up to help local students start the upcoming school year with confidence, comfort, and the right wardrobe by hosting its annual Back to School Clothing Shopping Spree.
Through this community-centered program, selected students will have the opportunity to shop for $150 in brand-new school clothes, helping ease the financial burden on local families as they prepare for the new academic term.

According to organizers, the program is open to all Lassen County students entering grades K-12, explicitly including local homeschool students. Please note that the program does not cover Pre-K, TK, or preschool-aged children.
Because spots for the shopping spree are limited, participants will be reviewed and filled according to financial need to ensure assistance goes to those who need it most. Free Mobile Dental Services at Public Health Office July 28th and 29th
Lassen County Public Health, in partnership with Smile California and Smile Dental Services, has announced a free mobile dental care clinic that will bring a lengthy list of oral health services directly to Susanville residents for a two-day event on July 28th and 29th.
The mobile dental clinic will be stationed at the Lassen County Public Health Office and is completely free and open to individuals of all ages.

Services will be offered from 8:00a.m. until 5:00p.m. daily at Lassen County Public Health, 1445 Paul Bunyan Rd., Suite B, Susanville.
Walk-Ins and Registration:
All ages and walk-ins are welcome to attend. However, community members are strongly encouraged to pre-register and complete required consent forms ahead of time to reduce wait times. To pre-register, call 1-888-585-3368.
In addition to receiving direct treatment, families are invited to stop by the mobile dental van to connect with a Medi-Cal Dental Outreach Representative. Representatives will be on-site to answer questions, share information about available dental benefits, outline covered services, and assist residents with learning how to successfully access ongoing care.

Holiday with a Hero’s 6th Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser Set for October 3rd
Want to spend a fun day on the golf course while helping to support a really wonderful organization? The Lassen County Holiday with a Hero program will be hosting their sixth annual fundraising golf tournament at the Diamond Mountain Golf Course October 3rd.
Registration for the 18-hole, four-person scramble is $425 for each four-person team.
Lunch, donated by the Susanville Grocery Outlet, is included in the tournament entry fee, and is catered by the legendary Joe Comino.
There will be an Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest, with prizes for the team with the best sweaters, great raffle prizes and a bar.

There will also be Hole-in-One, Closest to the Pin and Longest Yard contests.
Money raised at this tournament will all go to support the year-round activities of the Holiday with a Hero program.

Flags for Flag Day
June 15, 1977
Tyson Harrell, Lions Club President, and Marion Beard are pictured placing American flags in front of Main Street businesses in honor of Flag Day, Tuesday, June 14.
The flags are placed in front of donating businesses on nine holidays per year with the donations going towards Lions site conservation projects.
The Lions have reported many positive comments from local residents and tourists on the attractiveness of the flag decorated streets. (Advocate photo).
