CAL FIRE Suspends Burn Permits in Lassen, Modoc and Plumas Counties Starting Wednesday

The increasing fire danger posed by dead grass and hotter, drier conditions across the region has prompted CalFIRE to officially suspend all burn permits for outdoor residential burning within the State Responsibility Area of Lassen, Modoc, and Plumas counties.

According to an announcement released today by CalFIRE, the suspension will also apply to Local Responsibility Areas within Lassen County, per Lassen County Code Chapter 9.17. The ban officially takes effect at 8:00a.m. on Wednesday, June 17th, completely banning all residential outdoor burning of landscape debris.

While outdoor burning of yard debris will no longer be allowed, CalFIRE officials are asking residents to use this critical extra time to prepare their homes for the upcoming wildfire season by creating defensible space and hardening their property ahead of time.

CalFIRE provided several essential tips to help local residents prepare their property:

  • Clear all dead and/or dying vegetation 100 feet from around all structures.
  • Landscape with fire-resistant plants and non-flammable ground cover.
  • Find alternative ways to dispose of landscape debris, such as chipping or hauling it to a biomass energy or green waste facility.

The department noted that restricted temporary burning permits may still be issued under special circumstances if there is an essential reason. Agricultural, land management, fire training, and other industrial-type burning may proceed, but only if a CalFIRE official inspects the burn site and issues a special permit ahead of time.

Property owners should note that this residential debris burning suspension does not apply to campfires within organized campgrounds or on private property. However, campfires on private property strictly require written permission from the owner if the property owner is not present. Furthermore, all campfires must be maintained in a manner that prevents them from spreading to the wildland. A valid campfire permit is required.

For additional information on how to create Defensible Space, Home Hardening, Evacuation Planning, and tips on how to properly prevent wildfires, visit the official website at www.ReadyForWildfire.org. LCOE Warns Childcare Providers of Prevalent Overpayment Check Scam

The Lassen County Office of Education has issued an urgent warning to local residents and childcare providers regarding a sophisticated financial scam currently targeting caregivers throughout the region.

According to federal authorities, the Federal Trade Commission has identified a widespread “overpayment scam” operating across multiple digital channels. Fraudsters are actively reaching out to local childcare providers, educators and independent babysitters via email, text messages, social media and specialized online caregiving platforms.

lcoescamalert image

The mechanics of the scam are deceptive yet effective. The bad actors pose as legitimate, well-meaning parents seeking immediate childcare services. Once an agreement is reached, the “parent” offers to pay in advance and sends an official-looking check. However, the check is intentionally written for a sum significantly higher than the agreed-upon amount.

Shortly after sending the payment, the scammer contacts the provider, claiming they “accidentally” overpaid. They then request that the provider wire or electronically transfer the excess funds back to them immediately.

Local education and law enforcement officials stress that the initial check is entirely fraudulent. Because banks are legally required to make deposited funds available quickly, it often takes several days or even weeks for a check to fully clear and be verified as counterfeit. If a childcare provider sends money back from the “overpayment” during this window, the fake check will eventually bounce, leaving the provider entirely responsible for the lost funds and any associated bank penalties.

PROTECT YOURSELF: KEY RULES FOR PROVIDERS

Verify Clients First: Thoroughly vet any new or prospective clients before entering a business agreement or accepting payments.

Wait for Clearances: Never send money back from an overpayment until your financial institution confirms the check has fully cleared. Note that funds appearing in your available balance do not mean the check is verified.

Be Extremely Cautious: Treat any unexpected request to return overpaid funds or forward balances via gift cards, wire transfers, or digital apps as a major red flag.

The golden rule to remember: When in doubt, slow down and verify.

The Lassen County Office of Education asks area residents to help spread the word by sharing this scam alert with childcare providers, private caretakers, educators and families in the community to prevent neighbors from falling victim to this financial trap.

Hunter Education and Firearm Safety Class Announced for August

A traditional, classroom-setting Hunter Education and Firearm Safety Class has been scheduled for this August at the Janesville Fire Hall. The two-day instructional series is designed to prepare students for safe, responsible and ethical hunting practices.

In an effort to raise safety and conservation awareness, California’s first hunter education law was enacted in 1954. Today, California law requires hunter education training for anyone who has never held a California hunting license, does not possess a valid hunter education certificate, or does not have a hunting license from another state or province issued within the past two years.

Classes will be held August 1st and August 8th, at the Janesville Fire Hall, 463-390 Main Street in Janesville. Students must attend both days of instruction to take the final examination and receive their certificate of completion.

Important Notes for Parents & Guardians

Classes are offered throughout the State by more than 1,000 certified volunteer instructors, all dedicated to keeping hunting safe, ethical, and available to all Californians. If you have young students attending, please keep the following guidelines in mind:

Consent Forms: If the student is under 18 years of age, a required Student Consent Form must be signed by a parent or guardian.

Supervision & Mentoring: Parents or guardians are highly encouraged to attend with young students, especially those younger than age 16, to help define new words or provide additional mentoring during and after class.

Examination Policy: Generally, parents and guardians will not be allowed to assist students while they are taking the required final exam.

Seating is limited. To register for this class and reserve your seat follow this link. wildlife.ca.gov/hunter-education

Final Plans for Sidewalking Town Now Being Outlined

June 16, 1927

At a regular meeting of the trustees of the town of Susanville, held in the town hall on Tuesday evening, the sidewalk proposition was again discussed at length. The question was not definitely decided upon at the meeting, however, but was held over until a meeting that was called for the following night.

The clerk was ordered to erect the four American Legion signs on the roads leading into the city.

Wednesday evening the meeting was convened, and the sidewalk problem was again taken up. After considerable discussion and thought on the matter the city engineer was ordered to go ahead with the work in accordance with the plans as agreed upon by the board.

These plans as agreed upon include the sidewalking of the following streets as described:

Roop street from the turn near the Model Laundry to the cemetery with a four foot walk on each side.

Lassen Street from North to Court. From Main street south to the Court House five feet wide on both sides. On the north side of Main street 12 feet wide for one block and 4 feet wide for the remainder of the distance.

Plans for the curbing of the portion of Lassen street from Main north to Nevada will be made and it will be necessary for the property owners in that area to construct the curb.

Gay street north of Main five feet wide to Nevada and four feet wide from there on. On the south of Main street the work between Main and Cottage streets will be carried on in accordance with the plans formulated at the time that the previous construction was made. This comprises a curb and a fifteen foot sidewalk. From Cottage to the end of the street it will be four feet wide.

Union street will have five foot walks constructed on either side of Main street for one block and the remainder will be four foot.

Weatherlow street north of Main street will be sidewalked to North with a four foot walk on each side of the street.

It is hoped to start the work about August 1st and the present plan should see it completed before October 1st.
