The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett

As I loaded up my car to go to Drill Team practice last weekend, I was thinking of all the hours of practice my girls have put in to compete at USA Dance Nationals. It’s not just the hours in class, at Thursday night practice, or on the weekends either, it’s the time at home when they are going over counts in their head or sitting at their desk practicing their footwork.

It’s too much to count, honestly.

Not to mention the hours my captain put in every year as they learn, teach, clean the dance, make corrections, and keep the team on track. I have been blessed with incredible captains and this year Cori, Julienne, and Kylee are driven to get their team ready to compete.

Then I thought about the other students are also preparing to represent Lassen High School at an event or competition. We’ve got the LHS Drumline leaving next week to perform at Disneyland! This hasn’t happened since the 80s!

Our FFA teams are gone almost every weekend at regional events all leading up to their state competition. At the recent UC Davis Field Day, the Advanced parliamentary Procedure team won first, with Abby Vincent awarded high chairman and Julia Bruce high chair.

Many students from FBLA will also represent their local club at the state level, competing in April.

Our cheerleaders also competed at the JAMZ Nationals in January, bringing home an impressive 4th place finish!

Every single one of those students has put in countless hours preparing, practicing, and studying to do their best. They fit this in between their hours in class, studies, chores at home, and work. Some are involved in more than one organization and that really takes a balancing act.

And what about the fundraising?! Our community has generously donated tens of thousands of dollars to these clubs and organizations! From candy bars to blankets to raffle tickets, Lassen County has bought them all to support our local kids.

Thank you so much for always opening your wallets. We wouldn’t be able to offer these amazing opportunities without your financial assistance.

If you know one of these kids who are getting ready to compete, check on them in the next week or so. They’re probably tired, overwhelmed, and a little nervous. It’s time to wish them luck and send them on their way. They are going to do us proud.

They’ll represent LHS and they may come home with awards and accolades, plaques and trophies. But those things will be hung on a wall or put on a shelf and forgotten. The true awards are the friendships they have cultivated through shared meals and hotel rooms, sing a-longs in the van, uncontrollable laughter, private jokes, inspiring talks, overcoming fears, and supporting each other. Those memories last forever.

We’re cheering you on LHS!

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to shelleybennett24@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”

Many parents who visited the fair as children return to treat their own children to the experience.

Children’s Fair Coordinator James Hall explains that the purpose of the fair is, “to provide an opportunity for families to spend a pleasant day together that will hopefully reduce tobacco, substance, and child abuse within Lassen County.”

This year the fair will feature a big selection of community organization booths providing resource information and activities for students along with a vehicle display and face painting.

Would your group or organization like to have a booth at the fair? You can click here to fill out a booth application form.

There will be live entertainment throughout the day, including dancers from local dance studios and costumed characters roaming about the grounds. Static displays of emergency vehicles and other fun things for kids to see will be around each corner at the fairgrounds.

Dandy the Smokeless Dragon will be there, and Lassen Youth Football and Star Elite Cheer, Lassen Youth Soccer and the Lassen Aquatics will also be participating in the event.

“The Children’s Fair is intended to be a benefit to the community and not a profit-making opportunity,” explains Hall. “Be sure to come and join in the fun.”

Admission is free and the Children’s Fair will be held on Saturday, May 3rd, from 10:00a.m. until 3:00p.m., rain or shine, at the Lassen County Fairgrounds.

March 11, 1939

Mrs. May Delaney Streater, of 1914 Second Street, Susanville, has been in San Francisco for the past month, where she is receiving recognition for her latest song, published by the Sequoia Music Publishers of Los Angeles.

The song, “San Francisco Fair, “: has been given favorable mention by different music sections of the Golden Gate Exposition and is being featured by various schools, singers and clubs.

The leading shops of San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley are now displaying the song for sale at the regular price of 35c. Sherman & Clay, Baldwin Music company, John P. Broder, Waters and Ross and The Emporium in San Francisco are handling the sales of the song as are H. C. Capwell in Oakland, Tupper and Reed in Berkeley and the Southern Music Company and G. Mrs. Streater has also an offer from a Washington, D. C. firm to make records of her songs, but has not considered it as yet.

Mr. Streater, who lives at 1914 Second Street, has some copies of the song. Mrs. Streater has offered to let some person in Susanville take the agency for her song in this vicinity and will make the proper financial arrangements with them. Anyone wishing to contact Mrs. Streater can get in touch with her husband if the are interested in handling the song.

The cover for the song is very attractive, with a picture of the Tower of the Sun in relief set upon the cover in a blue background.
