The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett
About two years ago a friend mentioned that if I went to an Alumni Association meeting, they might consider donating money towards purchasing a flag that the Drill Team could present. We used to always borrow one from the Depot, but during Covid it went missing.
So I did and they were all friendly and accommodating, especially the president, Mrs. Donna Morelini. Now that I look back, I think that’s how she suckered me in.
| | |
Since then, I’ve attended for other reasons, to invite them to Homecoming, give an update on school events and ASB, and most recently I was “appointed” to help with the gym re-naming ceremony. I used the word “appointed” like it was an honor many were vying for when in reality, I received a text or phone call from Mrs. Morelini and was “volun-told”.
And that was ok too, because it was something I cared about and I wanted to make sure that Mary, Ann, and Michelle knew how much our community loved and admired their husband and father.
It was at one of those meetings where I was also volun-told about the opportunity to edit the Alumni Newsletter. Luckily, I snatched that one up before anyone else could!
I’m just teasing! I know Mrs. Morelini can take it, and in all seriousness, the Lassen High School Alumni Association is filled some very interesting people and as a group, they have done some incredible things. Most recently they have given a very generous donation to the LHS Drumline and gifted yearbooks to some deserving seniors.
They are also planning the annual Alumni picnic, held on June 14, 10:00-2:00 at Jensen Hall. It will be catered by the brothers behind Zato’s Sno Mountain Chalet. I’ll share more details as I get them.
I would encourage all LHS Alumni to join our group. It’s only $35 for a lifetime membership and you receive several newsletters per year to keep you up-to-date on your classmates. And if you graduated before 1955, it’s FREE! What a deal.
I used to think I was too young to join the Alumni Association, but guess what? When you graduate from high school, you are considered old by anyone under the age of 17. Besides, it really is a hoot.
Every meeting is also a history lesson and I learn something new about my beloved alma mater. We really need some more alumni from the 80s and 90s. I’m there from the class of ’88 and VP Niki Jarrell represents ’91, but that’s about it.
Thank goodness Portia Korver and officer Curtis Bortle are there from the 2000s and up! Now that I think of it, we are all probably there as part of Mrs. Morelini’s master plan.
Next month is our Spring Social. We are honoring Shanda Hooven (former counseling secretary), Greg Dickerson (former teacher, coach, and athletic director), and Doc Blevins (longtime supporter). They will be recognized as our “Honorary Alumnus of the Year.”
If you would like to join in the celebration (and maybe become a member), it is on Wednesday April 9th, 5:00 at the Senior Center by Riverside Park.
Please bring a hot dish or salad to share and RSVP to Kathryn Dempsey 510-506-5416.
Hope to see you there and go Grizzlies!
Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to shelleybennett24@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”

A Week Full of Wins, Wonder and Wow Moments:
Diamond View School Update
By Dede Heimbigner
Diamond View School Principal
Diamond View Middle School Panthers had a week packed with action, excitement and major accomplishments! From spelling champs to volleyball victories and everything in between, our students (and staff!) showed up, stood out, and made us proud.

Spelling Bee Brilliance
DV sent five awesome students to the Countywide Spelling Bee. 6th grader Angel. Velasco took 1st Place for 5th and 6th Grade Division. Sarah Smiril also placed 2nd for 7th and 8th grade division.

Science Bowl Smarts
DV took two teams to compete in the Far NorCal Regional Science Bowl, and our Panthers did an amazing job repping their school and showing off their science smarts, teamwork, and quick thinking.

Volleyball Victories
Our 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams both snagged 1st Place in their competitions this week! The energy, hustle, and team spirit on the court were next-level. Go Panthers!

Lassen College Field Trip
Our 8th graders took a trip to Lassen Community College, where they explored career and
technical programs with hands-on activities. Welding, health sciences, tech – so many cool
future possibilities.

DV Dance Fun
DV ASB also hosted a St. Patrick’s Day Dance that brought the fun, the tunes, and all the
Panther spirit! Students danced, laughed, and celebrated being part of the DV crew.

Best of Broadway Brilliance
Not a school event, but definitely a reason to celebrate—DV students and staff rocked the stage in Susanville’s annual Best of Broadway community production. Singing, dancing, acting—so much talent!
We love seeing our students take on challenges, try new things, and shine in so many different ways. This week was a great reminder of how amazing our DV students are – and how fortunate we are to be part of their journey. I’m also incredibly impressed by our dedicated staff, who consistently show up for late nights and weekends to make these opportunities possible.
Diamond View is the only traditional middle school in Lassen County serving students in grades six through eight. With strong academics, engaging electives, leadership opportunities, and a supportive culture, DV provides a valuable bridge between elementary and high school.
It’s a unique chance for students to experience a larger, dynamic learning environment that still feels connected and personal—a stepping stone before High School designed to help students build confidence, independence, and lasting friendships.
Enrollment for the 2025–2026 school year will be open soon. Families interested in joining the Panther community are encouraged to schedule a tour and see firsthand what makes Diamond View a place students shouldn’t miss. To learn more or to book a tour, contact Principal Dede Heimbigner at dheimbigner@susanvillesd.org.

Demolition of Old Bank of America Building
March 18, 1971
This giant crane from the Reno Iron Works this week has been relentlessly demolishing the old Bank of America building at the corner of Main and Gay Streets to make way for the new parking area which will adjoin the recently completed new Susanville branch of the Bank of America.
The above picture was taken on Wednesday afternoon toward the rear of the building on Gay Street. Hundreds of spectators were on hand earlier Wednesday morning as the crane removed part of the coping on the front of the building revealing the name of Lassen Industrial Bank, predecessor of the Bank of America in Susanville.
Demolition is being done by the American Demolition Co. of Sacramento and is expected to be completed within about 10 days.
