Adopt A Pet from the Lassen County
Animal Shelter – Gizmo
Hi there, I’m Gizmo… and I’m looking for a fresh start.
I’ll be honest—shelter life was a big shock for me. One day, I had a home, and the next, I was in a strange new place with unfamiliar smells and sounds. At first, I was so scared that I just kept to myself, hoping it was all just a bad dream. But the kind humans here have been so gentle and patient with me, and little by little, I’ve started to trust again.

|
Now, I’ve realized that ear scratches feel pretty amazing, being brushed is the best, and snuggling? Well, I could definitely get used to that! I may still be a little shy at first, but once I know I’m safe, I’ll be your most loyal, loving companion.
I’m neutered, up to date on all my shots, and have tested negative for leukemia—so I’m ready to go home whenever you are. If you have a quiet home and a little patience, I’d love to be your new best friend. Could you be the one I’ve been waiting for?
Please contact the Lassen County Animal Shelter with questions/inquiries at 1.530.257.9200.
Featured animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter are available for adoption on a first-come-first-serve basis. According to California law, all adoptable dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered before leaving our facility. If interested in adopting an animal, please contact the shelter directly.
Current shelter hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday. You can contact the shelter at 530.257.9200.

Lassen County 4H:
Ambassadors’ Corner for March
By Paiton Hallmark, Layton Allen, Samantha Medvin and Russell Mallery
Let’s talk about 4-H Camp! 4-H Camp used to be held annually at the Eagle Lake Youth Camp every summer. 4-H members spent several days camping out, singing songs around the campfire and learning all about Lassen County wildlife and the like.
Sadly, this tradition died off several years ago and it has been really hard to bring back. This year’s Ambassador team is going to make a run at it!

We are hosting a shortened 4-H Camp at the Lassen County Fairgrounds April 13th through the 15th. Yep, during spring break! This camp is not an overnight camp and it’s only half a day for kids ages 5-8 so that our older youth can enjoy some leadership activities in the afternoon.
We figure that kids might want something to do while their parents are at work or parents just want their kids to experience the fun of camp!
We have had many people ask – why should our kids come to 4-H Camp? Well, let us tell you a little about what we have planned for the first afternoon, which is open to children and their families, for the Camp Olympics.
Are you fast? Stealthy? Love to play team sports! 4-H Camp Olympics needs you! Layton Allen will be hosting “Capture the Flag.” There are two teams, the red and blue team. Each team has a flag, and the point of the game is to catch the other teams flag to win.
You have to play both defense and offense during this game which makes it interesting.
Layton is looking forward to the tribal dancing and cultural engagement during 4-H camp.
With 4-H Camp comes many games! During our Camp Olympics Paiton Hallmark will be hosting the classic game of the three-legged race. In this game participants pair up and stand side by side, with their adjacent legs tied together.
The objective of this game is to work together to run or walk to the finish line as quickly as possible. This game is a wonderful way to have fun, laugh a lot, and learn how to work as a team!
As much fun as this activity is, Paiton is looking forward the most to doing the Egg Drop Challenge. This challenge is a fantastic way to get creative! You will have to think out of the box to design a contraption that can protect an egg from breaking when dropped from a height.
This also allows for a teaching moment of science and engineering in a hands-on way.
Last but most definitely not least, you get to see if your egg survives or not. Even if your egg breaks, you will have a good laugh and learn what to do better next time.
At 4-H camp there are so many more fun activities planned and many cool skills to be discovered all while trying something new and meeting new friends, so why not give it a shot?
Lassen County 4-H Camp to feature the centuries old Potato Sack Race as part of the Camp Olympics hosted by Samantha Medvin. Fun Fact: potato Sack races date back to the early 1900’s when farm workers used to race each other while carrying sacks of potatoes on their back.
With a few race challenges added we are excited to bring this old-fashioned race to the Camp Olympics. Your 4-H Ambassadors are looking forward to seeing 4H camp come to a successful event attended by you. We have days planned with many activities, food, music, culture, campfire stories, special guests and fun. We want to thank many community partners who have helped the 4-H Ambassadors with camp planning.
Recently the Lassen Municipal Utility District donated $300 towards the camp, a big thank you to them for their support!
Russell Mallery is hosting some good old-fashioned Tug-of-War! Unfortunately, no mud pit in the middle though. The part of camp that Russell is looking forward to the most is making tie die t-shirts and the Egg Drop Challenge that the Ambassadors are planning!
4-H Camp Registration is closing on March 21st! If you’re between age ages of 5-18 then 4-H Camp is for you! If you’re not a 4-H member there’s a small 4-H enrollment fee of $33.50 in addition to the $25.00 camp registration fee.
If your children want to attend camp but need financial assistance please contact the Ambassador Advisor, Nickie Dilts, at 1.530.310.6882. We want every kid to get the opportunity to come check out 4-H Camp.

“Charm School” Presents Some Humorous Scenes
March 3, 1939
“Charm School,” the Junior class play, to be held on March 10, has some very numerous characters. There is Jim Simpkins, played by Jack Hayes and Tim Simpkins, by Junior Cady, who are twins. Then there is George Boyd, enacted by Arthur Mathews, and David MacKenzie, by Kim Hill.
The first act takes place in an old-fashioned New York house. The boys seem to be having a time about the washing! Listen.
George: “for the love of Mike, Tim, don’t take your shoes off in the parlor. I never saw anything like you fellows, you keep this room looking like a pig pen, law books all over the table. Say, whose week is it to put away the wash?
Jim: “Yous, my bright-eyed buckoo.”
George: “All right. Where’s the list? Dave you’ve been getting a new undershirt.”
David (proudly): “Two.”
Jim: “spendthrift.”
George: (Holding up ragged socks): “for Heaven’s sake, Jim, do you waste our money having socks like this washed?”
Jim: “What’s the matter with these socks? The holes are all below shoe level – expect one, and I paint my heel under that – My best dancing socks.”
Now isn’t that just like a man? See what happens to these boys when they arrive at the girls’ school.
