Why We Love This Place Wednesday: Susanville’s Best of Broadway Part Two

By Terra Avilla

All right Lassen County, let me weigh in on something – part two. Now, the first time I wrote about Susanville’s Best of Broadway it was because I was just a true fan of their performances. This year however, I really wanted to revisit them as a feature because I have been lucky enough to have a firsthand look at the production, as my little Peach is in the show, and it really opened my eyes on so much.

First off, if you have not been able to catch a show, you still have the chance, but you better hurry and buy your tickets because this week is the last week the production will run. A show tonight, Friday night, and two shows this Saturday!

I had no idea the amount of working and planning and prepping, and planning, meetings, and rehearsing, and planning, that goes into this show. But after watching the show, of course it does. It is truly a visually captivating show, all while showcasing the very talented people we have in this community.

No other production in our county, brings together the arts like BoB. I had taken Peach to her rehearsals, but during last week’s shows I was able to watch the other acts… and holy smokes, are they all just awesome. I laughed, I sat in wonder, and I got choked up and goosebumps watching the number “When You Believe.”

Having very little knowledge of any Broadway show did not hinder my ability to enjoy the performances.

Watching the little kids storm the stage in Peter Pan or Willy Wonka, or watching people I work with come to life in their character’s personas was really just so enjoyable to watch.

I was super worried that my beloved husband would be bored watching the other shows that did not contain our daughter, but his review of the show was hysterical and over the top. He loved it!

Proof that it’s a family friendly show, my four-year-old daughter also loved it. She still walks through our house singing/yelling “Frankenstein! Frankenstein!” as it was her favorite number!

We are very blessed, more than I even realized, to have this production in our community. A place for creativity and inclusiveness to grow. The directors and managers are truly the kindest people on the planet, after being in their presence for merely a moment you can tell how much they love and sacrifice for this show!

The friendships and the bonds behind the scenes are very cool to see. It is no wonder that the cast has become so close and so many of them return year after year. I would strongly recommend you treat yourself and catch one of the remaining shows! You will be sure to recognize various cast members, and be treated to a wonderful production, and you too, will see why Best of Broadway is one of the reasons I love where we live.

Lassen County attracts many OHV enthusiasts from outside of our state and county.”

LIHEAP Weather Bulletin: Heavy Snow Followed by Heavy Rain – Delightful!

Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno are warning that over the next five days we can expect everything from snow on the valley floor to three days of warm, atmospheric river fed storms bringing rain to wash all of that snow into Honey Lake.

First, snow is expected this morning with total snow accumulations of up to two inches, except for the higher elevations which can expect another 2 to 6 inches west.

lassenedcsponsorblock image

Above 6,500 feet, heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of up to 8 inches, except up to 18 inches west of highway 395 possible. Winds could gust as high as 50mph.

The Winter Weather Advisory expires at 1:00p.m. this afternoon, there will be a short pause in the storms and then a bog one rolls in Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning.

Higher snow levels Thursday night through Sunday bring the risk of flooding in lower elevations, mainly in areas below approximately 6,500 feet. The main impacts are expected to be on smaller creeks and streams and in areas of poor drainage.

A Flood Watch Will be in Effect from Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning.

A warm atmospheric river will lead to rapid runoff in areas of shallow snowpack and wet ground. Continued precipitation on areas with deeper snowpack may begin to pass rain through the snowpack during the prolonged precipitation event. This will lead substantial hazard of minor flooding with significant rises on main stem rivers. Flooding on mainstem

rivers is not forecast at this time, but rises to monitor stage or even minor flooding can’t be ruled out.

Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas due to deep snow confining flow and limiting drainage.

Low-water crossings may be flooded. Storm drains and ditches may become clogged with snow and debris.

Lassen Lumber and Box in 1949 from an Eastman Studio postcard

Box Factory to Be Sold

March 8, 1953

The box factory formerly owned by the Lassen Lumber & Box Inc., is being sold to A. I. Lucero and Walter Wirth of the T &M Carpenter Shop, by the Fruit Growers Supply Co.

Lucero and Wirth plan to operate the factory as a sash and door cup-up plant, employing 25 to 30 men at the present time. The Fruit Growers Co. is making lumber available to support this new enterprise.

Property involved in the sale is the box factory, office and machine shop building, and an area including about 30 acres of land. The Fruit Growers announced that the sawmill machinery at the Lassen Lumber and Box site has been sold to the Goff Machinery Co. of Stockton, who are now in the process of removing the machinery. It is understood that the Stockton company has sold the machinery to a Red Bluff concern, and that the machinery will be taken to Red Bluff.

Also announced was the sale of the former Lassen Lumber & Box properties to A. I. Lucero and Supervisor Lester Coffin, involving about 50 residential units, several of them duplexes.

Messrs. Lucero and Coffin had no statement to make at the present time regarding plans for the residential properties.
