Why We Love This Place Wednesdays: Mary Loflin
|
By Terra Avilla
Dear lord! What happened to your back?! I jumped away from Frankie as he showed me large round, circular bruises all throughout his back. We were dating and he was showing off these impressive marks on his back from a cupping massage. “It removes the toxins”, he said as he told me he could make me an appointment with his wonder masseuse. We had only just started dating, and I adamantly told him no.

Flash forward to a year or two into our marriage and wouldn’t ya know, I met this wonderful masseuse he was talking about. She emerged from New Image, wearing workout out gear and her iconic high heels. Now I’m sure ninety percent of you, with that statement alone, can ascertain who this week’s article is about.
The ever fabulous, and wonderful Mary Loflin.
Through the years, I have been lucky enough to know Mrs. Loflin, who is a ball of energy and spirit. To say she is dedicated to her business is an understatement.
Working just a block down, I drove by New Image a hundred times a week and lost track of the crazy hours I would see her there, tending to her gym, and her customers. Who, let’s be honest, she treats as family.
Just like the firecracker that she is, Mary has a daughter, Shay, who has that same wonderful spirit, and her two sons, Cody and Chance are two of my favorite people.
Mary has dedicated her life to her family and to her business. One of my all-time favorite memories is of her teaching an aerobics step class, in heels. I just remember thinking, “if she is doing this in three-inch heels, you can do it in sneakers Terra!”
That woman is tough, there is no doubt about that. However, even superwoman, can use a little assistance every once and a while, and we, as a community have the opportunity to assist her. Last fall, Mary was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Now, this woman, of course, is a fighter, and what a great way for those whose lives she has impacted to join her fight and show her some support.
This weekend, at her family-owned gym there is a HUGE benefit in her honor. There will be cornhole, a craft fair, a morning fit work out, a kids club and more.
What a great way to show your support for a woman who continually supports this community of ours. Oh, and did I mention the food? There will be a full lunch. People like Mary don’t often ask for help, and, if I had to guess, my guess would be she didn’t ask for this fundraiser, she is just well loved, and people put this on for her, so let’s not let them down.
It will be a beautiful event, for a beautiful person, so let’s come support her… and her iconic pumps. Both of which are part of the reason I love the place we live.

Lassen Public Health: Shifting Public Health Case Investigation, Contact Tracing and Outbreak Investigation Priorities
|
Lassen County Public Health announced on March 4th, that the agency will be limiting case investigation and contact tracing to the general population in order to shift their efforts and priorities to high-risk individuals or settings.
According to the brief press release Public Health will no longer monitor individual positive cases or send quarantine and isolation orders when receiving a positive COVID-19 test. LCPH will ensure high-risk individuals and businesses with outbreaks will continue to be monitored.
|
|
|
LCPH will continue COVID-19 testing on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 to 11:00a.m., and results will be received via phone call. If a paper copy is needed, please inform staff at the time of the phone call, or call LCPH at 1.530.251.8183 during normal business hours.
Due to these changes, LassenCares will only be reporting new cases, total cases, hospitalization count, death count, positives that are fully vaccinated and hospitalizations that are fully vaccinated.
The Public Health Department encouraged the public to continue slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing masks and getting tested if you feel sick – regardless of vaccination status. Please stay home and test for COVID-19. If you receive a positive test, isolate yourself for 5 days.
LCPH also recommended getting vaccinated: Current recommendations for boosters are for everyone age 12-17 to get a booster dose of Pfizer at least 5 months after their last dose of their primary series. Everyone ages 18+ who received Moderna, Pfizer or Janssen to get a booster dose of either Moderna or Pfizer at least 5 months after their last dose of their primary series.
If moderately or severely immunocompromised, those who received a third dose when first recommended to do so, are eligible for an additional dose.
Moderate or severely immunocompromised qualifying for an additional dose is one of the following categories:
- Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood • Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
- Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
- Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
- Advanced or untreated HIV infection
- Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress their immune response
- People should talk to their healthcare provider about COVID-19 vaccination given their medical condition.

NWS Weather Bulletin: Gusty Winds and Colder Temps Beginning Tonight
|
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Special Weather Statement warning residents to expect gusty winds and light snow Wednesday evening into Thursday.
Forecasters say that an inside slider-type system will bring snow showers, gusty northerly winds, and a brief period of colder temperatures late Wednesday through Thursday.
|
|
|
Although snowfall totals are expected to be on the lighter side, these types of systems are notorious for low predictability – especially when it comes to snow amounts. Western Nevada and the Sierra will have a chance of receiving accumulating snowfall by Wednesday evening, spreading south along the eastern Sierra into Thursday.
Gusty winds will begin Wednesday afternoon. Northerly wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph will be possible for valleys, with gusts over exposed ridges along the Sierra crest increasing to up to 100mph. Hazardous boating conditions, aviation and ski impacts, and elevated concern for high-profile vehicles are possible across the region.
Breezy winds on Thursday combined with afternoon highs in the 30s to lower 40s in valleys will result in a chilly day. Wind chills in the high Sierra are likely to be between 0 and -25 degrees with frostbite a concern.
