Susanville Ace Hardware
This May, your local hardware shopping trip can help change lives right here in our community. Susanville Ace Hardware, located in the heart of downtown, is partnering with the Lassen Law Enforcement Torch Run to support Special Olympics Northern California.
How You Can Help
The process is simple: throughout the entire month of May, shoppers are invited to “round up” their purchase total at the register. Those extra cents and dollars go directly toward providing essential opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities, allowing them to train, compete and showcase their talents.

Erik Estrada Returns to Susanville for “High Rollers Patrol” at Diamond Mountain Casino
The “High Rollers Patrol” is coming to town as 1970’s television icon Erik Estrada returns to the Diamond Mountain Casino & Hotel on Saturday, June 6th. This special one-night-only event promises a mix of retro charm and high-stakes excitement.
Event Schedule and Prizes
The festivities kick off at 6:30p.m., featuring an evening of “Erik Estrada Style” giveaways. Throughout the night, attendees have the chance to win a share of up to $2,500 in cash.
Hot Seat Drawings: Winners will be crowned every 15 minutes.
Grand Prize Drawing: The evening concludes with a massive giveaway at 9:00p.m., where one lucky winner will take home the top prize.

The Depot Barbershop Introduces Live Stream and Automated Updates for Customer Convenience
The Depot Barbershop in downtown Susanville is embracing new technology to make your next haircut more convenient than ever. Owner Steve Betts recently announced the installation of a live stream camera inside the shop, allowing customers to check the current atmosphere and wait times before they even leave the house.
“I am excited to finally bring the live stream to life,” says Betts. “It is something I’ve always wanted to bring to the shop. Being walk-ins only, it does make it tough for customers to judge busy times. Now customers can view the shop from anywhere.”
The live feed is designed to help patrons save time and plan their visits more effectively. By viewing the stream, customers can see exactly how many people are waiting and “check the vibe” of the shop.

In addition to the new camera, Betts has implemented an automated telephone system to better serve clients. This new feature ensures that every caller’s questions are answered immediately through an automated menu, providing essential information without requiring the barber to step away from the chair.
“It keeps my attention focused on the client in my chair while new customers can still get information,” Betts explains. “If you find a way to bring convenience to your customers, they will appreciate it every time.”
The shop has also updated its operating hours to better accommodate customer requests. The Depot Barbershop is now open Monday through Friday from 10:00a.m. to 6:00p.m.

CAL FIRE Announces $30 Million in Grant Funding for Regional Wildfire Resilience
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has announced the availability of up to $30 million in funding through the new Regional Wildfire and Landscape Resilience Grant Program. This initiative is funded by the voter-approved Climate Bond and aims to scale up wildfire prevention and land health efforts across the state.
The program is designed to support regional collaboratives that have identified high-priority projects through data-informed processes and community input. Rather than applying a “one-size-fits-all” approach, the grants encourage local regions to tailor strategies to their specific landscape challenges and opportunities.

“These collaboratives are uniquely positioned to identify the wildfire and landscape resilience needs within their regions,” said CAL FIRE Deputy Director for Natural Resource Management Eric Huff. “Regional Grants empower these partnerships to implement projects at scale.”
Eligible Projects and Activities
The grants will cover a wide range of activities focused on both forested and non-forested areas, including:
- Community hazardous fuels reduction
- Prescribed and cultural fire
- Reforestation, revegetation, and biomass utilization
- Pest management and maintenance of prior resilience efforts
- Workforce education and training aligned with project goals
Priority will be given to projects that show broad stakeholder engagement—including meaningful tribal participation—and those that leverage multiple funding sources to maximize public benefit.
Patrick Wright, Director of the Governor’s Wildfire and Forest Resilience Task Force, noted that the grants deliver on commitments to address California’s highest-risk areas at a regional scale. “These CAL FIRE grants will support investments where they matter most,” Wright said.
Application Process
The program will utilize a two-phase application process. Concept proposals are due by 3:00p.m. on June 30th. Following a review, selected applicants will be invited to submit full proposals.

Calling All Nature Enthusiasts! LL&TT Hosting Bio Blitz Saturday at Lassen Creek Conservation Area
Lassen Land and Trails Trust is inviting the community to step into the role of “citizen scientist” for a morning of exploration and discovery. This Saturday, May 16th, the Trust will host a Bioblitz at the 385-acre Lassen Creek Conservation Area.
From 9:00a.m. to 12:00 noon, nature lovers of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to join LLTT staff, board members and local naturalists to document the rich biodiversity of the region.
Whether you are a seasoned expert or a curious beginner, the event offers a unique opportunity to learn more about the local ecosystem.

What is a Bio Blitz?
A bio blitz is a communal effort to record as many observations as possible of various species – including plants, insects, birds, and mammals – within a designated location and time period. The data collected helps conservationists and researchers track the health and variety of local wildlife.
Participants can choose their own adventure for the morning. You can team up with skilled birders, “plant nerds,” insect lovers, and mammal track hunters to learn identification tips and tricks. For those who prefer a quieter experience, solo discovery treks are also encouraged.
The Trust is specifically looking for three to four dedicated volunteers to assist with insect collection. These volunteers will help use a variety of specialized collection methods to sample the area’s population.
The Lassen Creek Conservation Area is a vital piece of the local landscape, and this event serves as a way for the community to contribute directly to science while enjoying the beauty of Lassen County’s open spaces.

Lassen Volcanoes Swim Team Holding Car Wash Fundraiser May 30th
The Lassen Volcanoes Swim Team is gearing up for a community fundraiser and is inviting the public to come out and show their support while getting their car a bath!
On Saturday, May 30th, the swim team will be hosting a carwash to help raise much-needed funds for their upcoming season and programs.
The event will take place in the parking lot of O’Reilly Auto Parts, located on Main Street in Susanville.

The team will be hard at work scrubbing and shining vehicles from 10:00a.m. until 2:00p.m., so be sure to stop by and get your car looking its best while supporting our local youth swimmers.
In addition to community members bringing their cars by for a wash, the Volcanoes are also looking for extra hands to help make the event a success. Organizers are seeking volunteers to assist with the fundraiser and emphasize that all help is greatly appreciated.

Lassen Family Services to Host 2nd Annual Senior Information Fair June 15th
In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Lassen Family Services is inviting the community to celebrate and support our local seniors at their 2nd Annual Senior Info Fair being held Monday, June 15th, from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. at the Lassen Senior Center.
The Senior Info Fair serves as a vital resource hub for seniors and their families. Attendees can gather essential information on issues related to aging, connect with local service providers, and meet with businesses dedicated to helping with planning for the later stages of life.

Lassen Volcanoes Swim Team to Hold New Swimmer Assessments May 18th
The Lassen Volcanoes Swim Team is inviting local youth to “Dive In” and join the team for the 2026 season. New swimmer assessments will be held this coming Monday, May 18th, at 3:30p.m. at the Honey Lake Valley Community Pool, located at 800 South Street in Susanville.
The Volcanoes program focuses on building confidence, having fun, and fostering a strong sense of community among its athletes.
What to Bring:
Prospective swimmers should come prepared with:

Students Entertain at McKinley School PTA Meeting
May 14, 1978
THE SECOND GRADE CLASS of Julie Sorvag was one of several groups of children who entertained parents at the last meeting of the McKinley PTA for the school year. The second graders performed the song “You Light Up My Life” in sign language.
New PTA officers were elected at the meeting held Tuesday, May 23, with Doris Munzin chosen as president for the second year; Resa Packwood, vice-president; Sedilia Casillas, treasurer and Darla Savage secretary. Joan Carey was elected room mother representative; Edith Albers will head the phone committee and Donna Sargent will be the carnival chairman.
Mrs. Munzing reported on McKinley PTA activities over the year which included bringing a children’s jazz workshop from Reno, field trips for classes to the Reno Atmospherium and sponsoring awards for the Science Fair and an Honorary Service Award for McKinley Principal Al Cooper.
PTA meetings during the year dealt with the Mentally Gifted Minors Program, Child Abuse and the closure of Washington School. Mrs. Munzing gave special mention to the third-grade class of Virginia Travis. Three of the classes’ entries in the statewide PTA art project went to the state convention in Fresno. (Advocate photo).
