Millpond Fire Quickly
Controlled by Firefighters
Firefighters from the City of Susanville’s Fire Department were called out on May 7th, after receiving word of a vegetation fire burning in the old Sierra Pacific millpond south of Riverside Drive.

“The fire was contained at approximately one acre,” explains SFD Assistant Chief Tom Hernandez. “It was found that the cause of the fire was human caused by transients.”
Transients, according to Hernandez, have been known to set up camp in the area.

Other units on scene included a CalFIRE engine and one bulldozer, one Forest Service engine, one water tender from Standish Litchfield Fire Department, Lassen County Sheriff’s deputies and officers from the Susanville Police Department.

Lassen Nat’l Forest Publishes OSV Decision
The Lassen National Forest published the Notice of Availability for the Revised Final Environmental Impact Statement and Record of Decision in the Federal Register on May 27, 2022.

Publishing the NOA of the RFEIS and ROD in the Federal Register initiates a 30-day waiting period which must be observed before the Responsible Official may sign the Final ROD.

Once signed, the ROD will designate specific areas and trails (groomed and non-groomed) on the LNF that are open to Over-Snow Vehicle Use Designation Project by visitors of varying skill levels and ensures a balanced approach for the need to designate specific delineated areas.
These specifically delineated areas are where both motorized and non-motorized recreational users can equally enjoy opportunities to recreate while protecting threatened, endangered, and forest-sensitive species wherever necessary.

“This completes a planning process desired by our visitors to the LNF for several years,” said Deb Bumpus, Forest Supervisor, LNF. “I believe this decision has something
that pleases everyone.”

As part of the NEPA process, an opportunity to object to the RFEIS and ROD was offered in April 2018. A total of 16 objection letters were received and reviewed by Regional Office staff. The Forest Supervisor responded to these objections by revising and clarifying issues in the RFEIS and ROD in response to instructions received by the Deputy Regional Forester.

In comparison to the draft ROD, the final ROD focuses on clarifying for the public those areas that will be open to motorized recreational use as opposed to closed, balances the needs of and opportunities for non-motorized recreationists, and protecting key wildlife habitat on the forest.

More information about the Over-Snow Vehicle Use Designation Project, including the Revised Final Environmental Impact Statement, Record of Decision and maps are available online at https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=45832.

Little Leaguers Open Drills at Susanville Park
May 16, 1951

Approximately 160 prospective Little League baseball players turned out for the organization meeting and brief practice Saturday afternoon at Memorial Ballpark.

The diamond has been donated by the Lassen Lumber and Box Co. and is now ready for play. The company erected a backstop and is moving big timbers behind it for seats.

In addition, the A.F. of L has offered the use of a room in its hall, half a block from the field, for storing equipment and to serve as a dressing room for the boys.

Each of the four sponsors has donated $200 to equip and furnish suits for the four teams in the league, and each sponsor has chosen a name for its team.

The Tigers will be sponsored by the A. F. and L. with Shine Morales acting as manager.

The Cubs will be sponsored by the Lions Club, with Alfred McFeeley as managers. The Giants will play for the Rotary Club, with Frank Maurino managing. The Yankees, sponsored by B.P.E Elks No 1487 will be managed by J. A. Pliler.
