It was one of those events that simply felt historic. More than a hundred local, regional and state dignitaries joined with Susanville Rotarians to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Susanville in Jensen Hall at the Lassen County Fairgrounds.
Opening ceremonies kicked off with a performance by the Lassen High School Drumline, followed by the Presentation of Colors by Lassen County’s 4-H Leadership. Richard Bendix led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance and Pastor Terry Johnson delivered the invocation.
Guests enjoyed catering by local favorite barbecue magician Joe Comino and family, while the lovely Carol Fontana provided a beautiful violin soundtrack for the celebration.
While current Rotary President Todd Eid presided over the ceremony, Past Presidents Ron Jarrell and Michael Kirack took on Master of Ceremonies duties. Together, they introduced a number of Rotary dignitaries, including Rotary International Director Wyn Spiller, District Governor Larry Harvey and Past District Governor Dennis Geare.
A special delegation from Fallon’s Rotary Club—the chapter responsible for sponsoring the original 1926 charter that created the Susanville chapter—also attended to congratulate the club on its century of service.
The Susanville Rotarians were further feted by a host of government officials. Assemblymember and congressional candidate James Gallagher spoke briefly and presented a framed resolution to the club. Retired State Senator Brian Dahle also spoke, representing his wife, Senator Megan Dahle, who was unable to attend.
Teporaca Roadrunner delivered remarks on behalf of Assemblywoman Heather Hadwick’s office, followed by two local civic leaders – Susanville Mayor Mendy Schuster and Gary Bridges, Chairman of the Lassen County Board of Supervisors.
To close out the landmark event, Bill Gillaspie, the club’s President-elect, was named Rotarian of the Year by Eid, who emphasized the immense amount of work Gillaspie put in to make the 100th-anniversary ceremony a resounding success.

Blue Star Moms Holding BINGO Night Fundraiser June 8th at Vets Hall
The Blue Star Moms, a support group for mothers of military members, is hosting a bingo fundraiser on Monday, June 8th. The event will take place at the Veterans Hall, located at 1205 Main Street, starting at 6:00p.m.
Admission is $5 per bundle, which includes five games.
A total of 200 bundles will be available. Doors open at 5:00p.m.

There will also be beverages, snacks and tickets to a Quilt Raffle available for purchase.
The Blue Star Moms invite the community to come out and enjoy a fun evening of bingo while supporting a worthy cause.

Washington Man Killed, Two Injured, in Frightening Highway 395 Collision
A Snohomish, Washington resident was killed and two Nevada residents suffered major injuries following a head-on collision Sunday afternoon on US-395 south of Doyle, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP Public Information Officer Travis Music reported that at approximately 2:45p.m. on Sunday, an 84-year-old Nevada man, identified as Johnney Mixon, was driving a 2025 Subaru Ascent southbound on US-395 when he attempted to overtake a slower-moving truck tractor.

Mixon pulled into the northbound lane directly into the path of a 49-year-old Washington resident riding a BMW motorcycle northbound. The front of the Subaru collided with the motorcycle, ejecting the rider. The motorcyclist sustained major injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Following the impact, the Subaru careened off the west side of the highway and caught fire. Passerby’s stopped and quickly helped Mixon and his passenger, an 84-year-old Nevada woman, to safety. Both occupants received major injuries and were transported by ground ambulance to Renown Medical Center in Reno, Nevada.
The collision forced a full closure of the roadway for the emergency response and scene clean-up, with traffic diverted onto Constantia Road. One-way traffic control was eventually established on US-395 at approximately 8:00p.m. while fire crews completed their suppression efforts.
The identity of the deceased motorcyclist is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Lassen Family Services Offers Free Weekly ‘Budgeting & More!’ Life Skills Course
Lassen Family Services is presenting a new weekly resource designed to help residents take control of their finances and daily routines. The organization is hosting its Budgeting & More! Life Skills Course every Monday from 11:00a.m. to 12:00p.m. at 1306 Riverside Drive.
This helpful class is completely free and open to all members of the community, with no prior registration required – attendees simply need to check in at the front desk upon arrival.
The interactive sessions focus on practical, everyday strategies to improve household stability. Rather than following a rigid structure, the curriculum is highly flexible and adapts directly to attendee input each week.

Participants will learn how to uncover hidden budget breakers, map out successful financial goals and discover ways to plan meals efficiently. The course also offers guidance on managing time effectively and connects residents with valuable community resources.

LHS Lady Grizzlies to Host Annual ‘Camp Grizz’ Youth Basketball Camp
The Lassen High School Lady Grizzlies basketball program is inviting local youth athletes to hit the hardwood this June for Camp Grizz, a three-day summer basketball camp designed to build skills, confidence and teamwork.
The camp will take place June 15th, 16th and 17th at the Lassen High School Big Gym. Sessions will run daily from 8:00a.m. to 12:00p.m., with drop-off beginning 30 minutes prior to each session.
Developing Skills On and Off the Court

Designed for incoming 3rd through 6th-grade students, Camp Grizz offers a fun, structured environment where campers can learn the fundamentals of basketball while building sportsmanship and responsibility.
Participants will be grouped into small teams with trained counselors, ensuring personalized attention and a supportive atmosphere.
Camp organizers emphasize that the program is about more than just dribbling and shooting.
“We believe sports are a valuable part of life,” the camp information states, highlighting a focus on life skills such as teamwork, responsibility, and conflict resolution—all taught through engaging and positive instruction.
What to Bring
Campers should come prepared each day with:
- Appropriate athletic clothing
- Non-marking basketball shoes
- A water bottle
- A healthy snack
Registration Information
The cost to attend is $80 per child. While same-day sign-ups will be accepted at the door, families are highly encouraged to register early to help organizers with planning and team placement.

Have you ever wanted to perform under the Friday Night Lights? Now is your chance. Tryouts for the award-winning Grizzliettes dance team will be held each afternoon through this Thursday, May 21st, from 3:30p.m. to 5:00p.m. in the small gym.
To participate, students must hold a minimum 2.0 GPA and have a current physical on file. Please see Mrs. Bennett in room 115 with any questions.

This is a huge achievement for the school and an amazing opportunity for students who excel academically and demonstrate leadership, service, and character. Basos Uninjured in Unusual Accident
May 19, 1971
ALEX BASOS of Susanville escaped injury at about 6:25 p.m. on Tuesday when his out-of-control vehicle crashed through the front of the Montgomery Ward store on Main Street and stopped 16 feet inside the store.
Basos was preparing to leave a parking place near the store when the right front wheel apparently hit the curb, causing an impact force.
It is believed that when Basos was thrown forward he froze with his foot on the accelerator. The Susanville Police Department reported major damage to the store and appliances and moderate damage to the vehicle. (Schullo photo).
