Fireworks and More Return for Chamber’s
Big Independence Day Celebration
Get ready, Susanville! Everyone is invtied to come on down and celebrate the Fourth of July at the Lassen County Fairgrounds. The Lassen County Chamber of Commerce, with incredible support from their generous sponsors, is taking the reins this year to bring you a truly unforgettable, fun-filled day for the entire community.
The event promises to infuse new energy and family fun into this beloved tradition, creating a fantastic opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate in a big way.
Festivities kick off at 3:00p.m. on the 4th, and will keep going until 10:00.

Lassen County Chamber Executive Director Samantha Whitt says that you will find plenty of summer holiday fun to enjoy, starting with a delightful Craft Fair in Jensen Hall from 3:00 to 7:00, where you can browse and shop from local vendors.
As the afternoon unfolds, you can groove to live music and soak in the festive community atmosphere. Plus, your taste buds are in for a treat with a wonderful variety of food vendors serving up delicious bites and local favorites.
And for the kids? They’ve got them covered with exciting games and activities, including some refreshing water slides to help them stay cool and entertained on a warm summer day! As dusk settles, prepare to be amazed, because the night will culminate in a truly spectacular fireworks show lighting up the Lassen sky at around 9:00.
This celebration, according to Whitt, is truly a labor of love, proudly organized by the Lassen County Chamber of Commerce as a way of giving back and celebrating the amazing people who make our community so special.

Fair Happens June 13th
Local seniors and their families are invited to a comprehensive Senior Info Fair on Friday, June 13th, from 10:00a.m. until 2:00p.m. at the Senior Center, located at 1700 Sunkist Drive. This event, organized with support from Lassen Family Services, aims to connect individuals aged 60 and over with vital information and services available in the community.
The Senior Info Fair is actively looking for vendors and agencies that offer information and services relevant to the senior population. This presents a valuable opportunity for organizations to engage directly with potential clients and share resources.

Attendees can look forward to a day filled with information booths, helpful handouts, and exciting giveaways. The fair promises to be a one-stop shop for learning about various resources and support systems available to seniors in the Lassen County area.
Adding to the appeal of the event, a free lunch will be provided, making it a convenient and welcoming occasion for seniors to gather information and connect with others.
This initiative is also in support of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, highlighting the community’s commitment to building strong support for elders.

Annual Pet Adoption, Low-Cost Rabies and Licensing Clinic to be Held This Saturday
The County of Lassen and the City of Susanville are inviting you to bring your pet to their annual Pet Adoption and Low-Cost Rabies Licensing Clinic this Saturday, May 31st, at the Lassen County Animal Shelter on Johnstonville Road.
Lassen Veterinary will be administering the rabies vaccinations which cost $12 for dogs from both the city and county.
City licenses are $4 for altered pets, $10 for unaltered and for County licenses the cost is $5 for altered pets and $15 for unaltered.

Why does your dog need to be licensed? Animal licensing assists the police department and county animal control personnel in identifying the owner of a stray or runaway animal. A dog that is licensed and wearing their identification tags can be returned to the owner quicker and avoid being taken to the animal shelter.
Make sure when you visit the event that your dog is on a leash and cats must be in pet carriers. If you are just coming for the license you must bring a current rabies vaccination certificate.
The Clinic will be held at the shelter, 472-000 Johnstonville Road, from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m.

Susanville Fire Department Sets
June 30th as Weed Abatement Deadline
The Susanville Fire Department is reminding city residents that the Weed Abatement deadline is Monday, June 30th, 2025 for removal of weeds and fire hazards.
“We are asking that all hazards be mitigated before the deadline,” explains Assistant Fire Chief Tom Hernandez. “The following Weed Abatement Standards are designed to assist firefighting efforts by, prevention of, or slowing the spread of fire.”
According to Hernandez the Susanville Fire Department has the final decision in determining whether an area is ‘safe from the spread of fire’ and conforms to the intent of the code.

The applicable City Code Section, 8.28.030, says that, “It is unlawful for the owner, agent, lessee or other person having charge or control of any piece or parcel of land within the city to allow weeds or rubbish to grow, or to remain thereon, or upon the street or sidewalk in front of such piece or parcel of land.”
Weeds, grass, or other combustible growth may be abated by mowing, disking, or scraping. If mowed the combustible growth must be cut and maintained to a maximum height of 4 inches.
All hazards must be mitigated prior to the June 30th, deadline and abatement by open burning is not permitted.
Guidelines for removal of hazards on all properties within the city:
- Mow or disk space around all buildings 30 feet wide at minimum.
- Mow or disk space 50 ft. wide minimum completely around the perimeter of the property to the street or sidewalk. Mow or disk 30 ft. wide minimum cross-breaks every 50 ft. maximum, (property can be completely mowed or disked in lieu of cross-breaks.)
- Mow or disk space extending 30 ft. minimum beyond the foliage of any group of trees.
- All rubbish, trash, trimmings, rubble or litter shall be removed from the property.
- All woods, fuel, or lumber shall be neatly stacked or removed from the property.
- All weeds, grass, or other combustible growth shall be cleared at least 10 ft. from around any combustible storage.
- Greenbelt, pastures, and environmentally-sensitive areas shall be assessed on an individual basis. Contact the fire department if you believe that this applies to your property.
- Mow or disk space may be required to be larger if a potential fire hazard exists.
- Remove down branches from trees and trim lower branches up to 6 ft. from the ground or 1/3 the height for smaller trees.

Banner Lassen Medical Center is inviting local residents to a community-centered Focus Group discussion on June 16th, to help the medical facility understand our community’s health needs – identifying and understanding key priorities to improve access, services and wellness. Your feedback will contribute to Banner Health’s 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment.
The purpose of the meeting is identifying and understanding key priorities to improve access, services and wellness.

Erecting Mill on McDow Mine
May 27, 1940
Two forty-ton units, Ellis model mill, are being erected at the McDow property on Diamond Mountain. The plant was trucked here over the weekend from San Francisco.
A. C. Ackerman, mining mill contractor, and a crew of eight men are supervising erection of the mill, and he will stay at the plant for a number of months for any necessary adjustments.
A. G. Lantz of San Jose, who is financing the installation, was here over the weekend to see about trucking of the equipment. The mill will serve as a custom plant for the Diamond Mountain district.
Lantz has taken a lease-option for the Lee Musgrove property and plans to begin working it on a big scale.
Sleeping quarters and a cook house and dining hall have been under construction for the past month to care for the crew Lantz plans to employ.
The Placer-Sierra Co-operative Power Company lineman crew is extending major power lines to the plant. It is hoped to have the mill ready to start by July 1. As the demand requires more capacity units will be added to the mill.
