Why We Love This Place Wednesdays: Susanville Soroptimist Margarita Fest
|
By Terra Avilla
Ahh May in Lassen County. The weather warms, the days stay lighter longer, and the school year is winding down. The nights are beginning to warm up, and star gazing season begins. It is by far one of my favorite months. However, I would be a big fat liar if I didn’t say one of the other reasons I love May is that it means one of my all-time favorite events is here… Margarita Fest!

Before I go any further, I want to make it clear that I rarely ever drink, (I do like Margaritas though) however aside from the delicious drinks, I really just enjoy the event for the socialness of it. I enjoy being around our community members and seeing them have fun.
I enjoy having an adult event that provides an opportunity for me and my husband to have some adult time alone.
For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about, I am talking about Soroptimists’ huge fundraiser event. The premise is that different businesses/clubs, restaurants, etc., each have a booth at the event. Each booth tries their best to whip up the best drink.
Guests purchase a card, where they can get a certain number of samples from the booths. The guests can then vote on the booth that they believe had the best margaritas.
Delicious, yes. But the fun part is seeing your family, friends, neighbors at the event. Which by the way – I almost forgot the absolute best part – there is always a live band.
And as if not to be outdone by any other event, the ladies at Soroptimist have added a Nacho bar and a Salsa contest. Seriously. What more could you want to do on a Friday night? Music, Salsa. Nachos. It’s literally a trifecta of three things that make me happy.
Some of my best memories are cutting a rug with my hubby at this event. It’s just a great idea, with great people. The fact that it also is a great fundraiser for one of my favorite non-profits is also just icing on the cake.
If you have never gone, I encourage you to stop by. No drinking necessary! Just come say hello and listen to great music. I have been to many of their events, and I have enjoyed myself at every single one. I encourage you to buy your tickets. This event is a crowd pleaser, it is an annual event that I look forward to every year.
If you can’t get anyone to go with you – just show up, I guarantee you, as is the life we live here in Susanville, the minute you walk in the door, you will see forty other people you know. Just go. Go and dance the night away and have fun at one of my most favorite events that reminds me why I love where we live.

City of Susanville Announces New ‘Adopt A River Trail’ Cleanup Program
A new program announced by the City of Susanville will coordinate volunteers and sponsors of twenty-one segments of the Susan River trail between Alexander Avenue and Highway 36. Each sponsoring group will be responsible for cleanup of a 100-yard segment of the trail at least once every two months.
“The Susanville City Council has established improving the Susan River Trail as one of its top priorities,” explains City Administrator Dan Newton. “In recent years, there has been incredible community support through clean-up efforts to keep the Susan River Trail a popular and beautiful trail.”
The city’s Adopt-A-River Trail Program provides an avenue for individuals, organizations, or businesses to help maintain sections of the Susan River Trail and promote civic responsibility, community pride and camaraderie within organizations or groups.
The river trail has been divided into twenty-one sections, and the city will identify the adopted section with an aluminum sign displaying the participating group, organization, or individuals name and/or logo. The city will place each sign in a prominent, visible location along the trail.
Safety vests, trash bags, gloves, trash collection pick-up and hazardous waste disposal prior to each cleanup activity will all be provided by the city.
Adopt-A-River Trail Program participants commitment will be to perform litter and trash removal on their adopted segment every two months for a period of two years, or as conditions warrant, and report any hazardous waste items to the City of Susanville Public Works or Susanville Police Department.
For more information on the program please click here or call Jolene Arredondo at (530) 252-5106.

What They Think Up North
May 4, 1882
The Susanville Advocate has an article on Hammond & Wilson’s stage line, headed ‘An outrage on the people.’ In which it complains of unfair treatment and extortionate charges.
It says in closing:
“They complain that the line does not pay; and why doesn’t it pay? Because a person will not send by express over this line if it can possibly be avoided, on account of the exorbitant rates, while if they were lower their business would increase tenfold.”
“If Wells, Fargo & Co. would establish an office here the rates would be no more from San Francisco to Susanville than from San Francisco to Reno. It is a very impudent concern. They even refused to carry the Reno Gazette to subscribers along the line, who pay annually the sum of twelve dollars for the delivery of all mail matter, and all because this paper spoke of the entrance to their hall, which is used for public gatherings, as being inadequate for exit in case of fire.”
“They have sub-contracted to carry the mails between this place and Oroville, and it is presumable that they will increase the fare on both routes. In all probability they will refuse to carry the Advocate through the mails on account of our denouncing their express line as a ‘bulldozing’ concern.”
