You Can Be a Part of the Chamber’s Magical Country Christmas Celebration
The holiday season is almost upon us and the nice folks at the Lassen County Chamber of Commerce are preparing for their big annual Magical Country Christmas Celebration, which will be held on Saturday, December 7th, in historic uptown starting at 4:00p.m. on Main Street, which will be closed to traffic for the event.
At 6:00p.m. the Magical Country Christmas parade will start, with floats, dancers and participants moving up Main Street to the tree in front of the Elks Lodge. The big finale of the parade will be the arrival of Santa, the lighting of the tree and fireworks!
Holiday revelers at the uptown celebration will also get to enjoy live holiday music performances, a hot toddy walk and dancing.
Uptown businesses will be open late, and vendors will line the streets with food, beverages, and custom gifts to help with your Christmas shopping.
The Chamber’s yearly Christmas party has become tradition in Susanville, with nearly two thousand people expected to show up to help welcome Santa to town.
There is still plenty of time if your group or organization would like to participate in the parade. The chamber is looking for sponsors for this year’s event. Sponsors will be recognized in advertising and on the event poster.
Set Up a Vendor Booth
A 10×10′ booth space in uptown costs $45 for Chamber members and $50 for non-members. The vendor is responsible for providing all items needed for the booth (chairs, table, etc.) setup and tear down. No electricity will be provided. Click here for a vendor application. Applications must be submitted by December 2nd.
Be in the Magical Country Christmas Parade
Your business, group or organization can be a part of the big Magical Country Christmas parade! There are categories for float, vehicle, walking group, fire truck, tractors and more.

LHS Class of 2025 Hosts Senior Arts and Crafts Auction this Saturday
The Lassen High School Class of 2025 is inviting everyone to their Senior Arts and Crafts Auction, a celebration of student talent, creativity, and craftsmanship.
This unique event will be held tomorrow, November 16th, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM in the Lassen High School Student Center, offering an exciting opportunity to view and bid on one-of-a-kind artwork created by Lassen High’s talented seniors.
Featuring more than fifty distinctive pieces, the auction includes a variety of media and styles that reflect the diverse interests and skills of the students.

Guests can look forward to seeing exquisite ceramics, pottery, finely crafted woodworking projects, captivating photography, stunning paintings, intricate metalwork, and much more.
The Lassen High School Facebook page will showcase a sneak peek of the artwork ahead of the event, giving the community a preview of what’s to come.
The event kicks off with a silent auction beginning at 2:00p.m., where guests can place early bids on select pieces. The excitement will build to a live auction starting at 2:30, when attendees will have the chance to engage in friendly bidding wars for their favorite works.
This is a fantastic opportunity for community members to acquire original artwork while supporting a meaningful cause, as all proceeds will go directly toward funding the senior class trip — a memorable experience for Lassen High’s graduating students.
For those who cannot attend in person but still wish to support the event and bid on artwork, absentee bidder forms are available. With a range of items across many artistic disciplines, there is something for every art lover and supporter of local youth.

Arts Council Kicks Off Annual Member Showcase with Friday Afternoon Reception
The Lassen County Arts Council will be featuring members’ artwork in the gallery on Cottage Street, November 15th through December 24th, as part of their Annual Member Show. The showcase provides an opportunity for local artists to display and sell their creations.
The month-long show wil kick-off with an Artists’ Reception today, November 15th, from 3:00 to 7:00. at the gallery at 807 Cottage Street.
All of the artwork on display will be available for purchase during the show.

Normal gallery hours are Fridays from 1:00 to 5:00p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 until 5:00.

Third Annual Janesville Parade
of Lights Set for December 14th
Let’s light up Janesville this holiday season! Everyone is invited to Janesville for the third Annual Janesville Parade of Lights, being held December 14th, on Janesville’s Main Street.
The parade begins at 6:00p.m., with staging at the firehall starting at 3:00.
The festive event will feature decorated and well-lit side-by-sides, tractors, classic cars, and more.

Enjoy the holiday spirit with tree lighting, pictures with Santa, food vendors, a craft bazaar, and a festive parade that loops from the Fire Hall to the Dollar General.
Entry Fee for the parade is a new toy or new jacket. All donations go to local Janesville students.

Christmas Tree Permits for Lassen
National Forest On Sale Now
Keep the family tradition alive this year or start a new one – by cutting a Christmas tree within the Lassen National Forest.
Experience cool mountain air, the forest floor crunching beneath your boots, and finding that perfect tree this Holiday Season and according to the Forest Service cutting a Christmas tree improves forest health!
The permit system helps to thin densely populated stands of small-diameter trees. Removing these trees in designated areas helps other trees grow larger and can open areas that provide food for wildlife.
Christmas tree cutting permits are on sale through December 24th, 2024. You may purchase a permit through the mail, or at any of the district offices and Supervisor’s Office during normal business hours, or from a local vendor.
Here in Susanville, you can purchase permits at either the Forest Service district office or at Susanville Supermarket IGA. The store is open from 5:00 to 10:00, seven days a week, and permits can be purchased at the customer service desk.

Permits are $10.00 each with a maximum of two permits per household. Your permit allows you to cut your tree until December 25th.
The Forest Service has a fillable order form for mail ordering your Christmas tree permit and detailed instructions can be found at this link. Mail order forms must be received no later than December 7th, for processing.
Though tree cutting is permitted through December 25th, the Forest Service recommends cutting early in the season before higher elevations become snowbound. Trees can stay fresh for several weeks when properly stored but begin to lose moisture as soon as they are cut, so place them in water as soon as possible.
You must follow all Travel Management Rules for motor vehicles when you are out cutting your tree. The Motor Vehicle Use Maps available on our website, show all open roads and trails available for motor vehicle use under these rules.
Please practice good stewardship and be certain the tree you want to cut is located on National Forest lands before you cut it down and ensure the maximum height of the stump left behind is no taller than twelve inches above bare soil, with no live branches on the stump. Topping trees is not permitted.
Tree cutters should be prepared for unpredictable weather changes and colder conditions in higher elevations, especially as the season progresses. A fun family outing can become dangerous for the unprepared during rapidly changing weather patterns.
Plan your trip accordingly: check the weather and road conditions, let someone know where you are going and when you will return, have a full tank of fuel in your vehicle, bring plenty of warm clothes, water, emergency food, tire chains, shovel, a saw, or axe to cut your tree, and a tarp and rope to bring it home.
Please call ahead with any additional questions before purchasing a permit, as all sales are final.

The Lassen County Fair is
Looking for Next Year’s Fair Theme
The Lassen County Fair is seeking a Fair Theme for the 2025 fair. Come up with a clever and catchy theme and you could win a pair of tickets to any grandstand event and a commemorative fair poster.
All you have to do is submit the winning theme, selected by the Lassen County Fair Advisory Board.
The winner will have their theme incorporated in the 2025 fair logo.

The contest is open to all Lassen County residents. Entries can be emailed to Lcfair@co.lassen.ca.us or turned into the fair office at 195 Russell Avenue. Be sure to include your name and contact information along with your submission.
The deadline to enter is November 29th, and the winning theme will be picked at the Fair Board’s December meeting.
The 2025 fair will run from July 16th through the 20th and the chosen theme will be used in print ads, marketing materials and signage during the fair.

Vandalism at Schools Results in Cancellation
November 15, 1951
Two-way vandalism which forced cancellation of Saturday afternoon’s traditional Lassen-Westwood varsity and junior varsity football games was unprecedented and came as a surprise to officials of both schools. Lassen Union High School Principal Clinton Nielson could not remember a similar incident between the neighboring high schools, which have long enjoyed excellent athletic relations.
The game was cancelled several years ago because players illness he recalled, but no malicious acts were involved.
Westwood fired the first shot Thursday evening by burning a large ‘W’ on the Arnold field turf. Several local students, who were in the music building, put out the blaze, which Nielson said was started with gasoline or oil.
Westwood school’s superintendent, Ray Haskell, investigated the incident the following day and obtained signed statements from several members of the Westwood team admitting that they were responsible.
Haskell spoke to Lassen authorities who decided to follow Westwood’s recommendation as to whether the game would be played as scheduled. After considering the situation, Haskell, together with Nielson and Lassen District Superintendent L. V. Greenleaf agreed that the game would be played unless there was retaliation or further incident.
Accordingly, Haskell appeared that afternoon at the local football rally to apologize on behalf of Westwood school. He expressed hope that there would be no retaliation and that the good relations which the two schools had enjoyed in the past would continue.
“The response of the student body was very favorable, and at the time we felt there would be no further difficulties.” Nielson said. Those hopes turned out to be short lived, however. Friday night, Nielson said, “persons unknown but assumed to be Susanville students or susanville residents, visited the Westwood campus and burned a large ‘S’ in their football turf.
Haskell, Nielson and Greenleaf, in a three-way telephone conversation, decided that the circumstances left them no recourse but the cancel the game.
