Diamond View School Hosts 7th-8th Grade Girls Basketball Tournament
This past weekend, Diamond View Middle School hosted a 7th-8th grade girls basketball tournament, welcoming eight teams – Portola, Loyalton, Chester, Westwood, Janesville, Shaffer, Johnstonville, Richmond, and Diamond View – and according to Principal Dede Heimbigner the weekend was filled with great competition, teamwork and community spirit.
“I wanted to take a moment to share how proud I am to be part of this amazing community,” Heimbigner explained. “What stood out most was how the entire community came together in such a positive way. Throughout the tournament, people were helpful, thoughtful, and supportive. From encouraging all the players to helping clean up or making room for strangers, the kindness and camaraderie were truly inspiring.”
According to Heimbigner, the gym was packed with standing-room-only excitement for three days. Parents, grandparents, family members, and friends cheered for all the teams, showing sportsmanship and support, even during those intense overtime and double-overtime games. The girls played with heart and determination, and their sportsmanship was a highlight of the event.
“A big thank you to the coaches, referees, players, and staff for making this tournament such a success. It was wonderful to see our community come together in such a positive and uplifting way.”
“This weekend reminded me of how lucky I am to live and work in Lassen County. Thank you to everyone who joined us, supported the players, and helped make this event so special. Congratulations to all the teams on a fantastic tournament!”

Lassen Office of Ed Launches New Family and Community Engagement Program
The Lassen County Office of Education has launched Family University, a new initiative designed to connect families, students, and communities in the pursuit of educational success.
As part of the Family and Community Engagement Program, Family University offers a variety of engaging events, mini-online lessons, and community pop-ups that provide valuable resources to support students from preschool through 12th grade.
One highlight of the program is the Family University Pop-Up Night, a fun, interactive event that brings families and schools together to support student success. Through engaging mini-workshops and hands-on activities, parents and guardians gain tools to help with academics, emotional resilience, and personal growth.
These events foster community, strengthen family involvement, and provide valuable resources for student support in a collaborative atmosphere. Stay tuned for the first pop up event.
Family University also offers Empowered Adult workshop sessions, which equip parents and guardians with effective strategies for fostering student growth and well-being. Topics such as homework support, emotional resilience, and academic goal-setting are tailored to students’ developmental needs at each grade level.
These workshops provide actionable insights that help families support their children’s success.
Families can also benefit from interactive mini-sessions, quick under-six-minute videos packed with practical tips for academic and emotional support. Each session includes a fun family activity to reinforce learning, making it easy for busy families to engage and boost their children’s educational journey.

Cal-FIRE Funding Projects to Restore
and Protect Forest Ecosystems
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has announced the availability of up to $70 million in funding for projects aimed at improving forest health across the state. Cal-FIRE is soliciting applications for projects that work to proactively prevent catastrophic wildfires and restore forests to healthy, functioning ecosystems while also sequestering carbon and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Applications are being accepted until 3:00p.m. on January 15th, 2025.

“We know this work makes a difference both in forest health and wildfire resilience and that is why Cal-FIRE is proud to have awarded over $700 million in Forest Health grant funding since 2017,” said Chief Matthew Reischman, Deputy Director of Resource Management.
“This Forest Health grant funding supports sustainable land management practices, reforestation efforts, promotes a healthier ecosystem, and ensures that future generations can enjoy and benefit from California’s natural resources.”
For examples of efforts, including forest health projects, that have been effective at mitigating the effects of wildfire in 2024, click here.
The Forest Health Program funds active restoration and reforestation activities aimed at providing for more resilient and sustained forests. This ensures the future existence of forests in California while also mitigating climate change, protecting communities from fire risk, strengthening rural economies, and improving California’s water and air.
A virtual pre-recorded workshop will be made available to explain the grant process and requirements. Please check the Forest Health webpage to view the workshop. Any questions can be directed to ForestHealth@fire.ca.gov.
Projects that receive funding from the Forest Health grant program are designed to complement the California Forest Carbon Plan, California’s Natural and Working Lands Implementation Plan, California’s Wildfire & Forest Resilience Action Plan, California’s Strategic Plan for Expanding the Use of Beneficial Fire, and AB 32 Climate Change Scoping Plan.
The Forest Health grant program is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of cap-and-trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment– particularly in disadvantaged communities.
