Why We Love This Place

Wednesday: Randy Robbins

By Terra Avilla

We’re not just lucky to have Randy Robbins in our community – we’re blessed.

If you’ve ever stepped foot in Community Church on a Sunday morning, you’ve likely been greeted by Randy Robbins’ warm smile.

Randy isn’t just another face in the crowd. He is that guy who can make the whole congregation chuckle with a well-timed joke during announcements or a playful riff on his guitar.

His down-to-earth nature makes everyone feel at home, whether you’re a long-time member or a first-time visitor. I know because out of all the guests we’ve brought to church, they all leave there saying how much they like that “guitar guy.”

But Randy’s impact on our community extends far beyond the church walls. As a dedicated family man, Randy’s love for his beautiful family is evident in absolutely everything he does.

Whether he’s cheering on his kids at local sports events or planning family adventures in our stunning backyard, Randy IS the spirit of what it means to be a devoted husband and father in Lassen County.

Speaking of our backyard, Randy has a knack for capturing the breathtaking beauty of Lassen County through his camera lens. His photography isn’t just a hobby, it has become a gift to our entire community.

From the Eagle Lake to the rugged peaks of Lassen Volcanic National Park, Randy’s award-winning shots have put our slice of Northern California on the map. It’s no exaggeration to say that his work has garnered national recognition, with several prestigious awards under his belt.

My favorite photos are of the wildlife that he captures so flawlessly.

What truly sets Randy apart is his ability to juggle all these roles while remaining incredibly humble.

Whether he’s leading worship on Sunday, capturing a stunning sunset, or volunteering his time at Awana’s or Vacation Bible Study – Randy approaches each task with the same genuine enthusiasm and care.

His talents, his dedication to his family and students, and his ability to showcase the raw beauty of Lassen County through his art make him an irreplaceable part of Lassen County. Randy doesn’t just remind us why we love this place; he shows us through his actions, and his heart.

So, the next time you see Randy around town, whether he’s setting up his camera for the perfect shot or strumming his guitar at church, take a moment to appreciate the passion and heart he brings to our community. Lassen County wouldn’t be the same without him, and that’s why he is one of the reasons I love where we live.

Cal-FIRE to Lift Burn Permit Requirement in Lassen, Modoc, and Plumas

Due to recent and forecasted rainfall, Cal-FIRE’s Lassen Modoc Unit Chief has lifted the requirement for a burn permit in Lassen, Modoc and Plumas Counties. The change will take effect on November 22nd, at 8:00a.m.

While the burn permit requirement is lifted, it’s important to remember that anyone conducting outdoor burning is still responsible for any escaped fires and could face criminal or civil liability.

Cal-FIRE urges residents to continue practicing safe burning practices, such as:

calfirebunrallowed image
  • Avoiding burning on windy days
  • Staying with burn piles until they are completely extinguished
  • Checking with the local air district to ensure it is a permissive burn day. Air districts can issue fines for burning on “No Burn Days”

Those burning on property they don’t own must obtain permission from the property owner and present it upon request.

Weather Bulletin: Winter Storm to Continue Throughout the Day

Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno have issued a Winter Weather Advisory warning area residents to expect heavy snow above 5,000 feet, with accumulations up to eight inches in the mountains west of Susanville.

The Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Lassen, eastern Plumas and eastern Sierra counties until 10:00 this evening.

Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact this morning's and this evening's commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Snow levels are projected to rise up to near 7,000 feet after 10:00p.m., on Wednesday, which will limit additional snow totals. Roads will remain slick and wet with additional rainfall.

Slow down and use caution while traveling. The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.

Susanville Fire Department Takes Delivery of New Truck

November 20, 1976

Don Morrison, manager of the local United California Bank branch, last Friday presented the keys to a new fire truck the city acquired with UCB financing to Susanville Mayor Jim Chapman and Fire Chief Ray Berettini.

At a cost of $48,000, the International truck with a 1,000 gallon per minute pumping capacity was acquired under a lease-purchase agreement with UCB.

With the new addition, Berettini does not foresee a need by the city for any major pieces of fire equipment for quite a few years.

Berettini says the new fire truck upgrades the pumping capacity of the department and replaces two older trucks, GMC engines built in 1940 and 1943, that will become reserve units.

The new truck will join two other engines the department operates to provide the city with three Class A, or initial response pumpers. The fire chief said the acquisition was considered over the past three years and that it took a year to build the truck and install its equipment.
