Why We Love This Place Wednesday:

Lassen County’s Holiday Season

By Terra Avilla

As the crisp winter air settles over our beloved Lassen County, it’s impossible for me not to feel a surge of warmth in my hearts. Our little community may be small, but when it comes to holiday spirit, we’re as big as they come!

Is there anything better than the holiday season in a small town. I think not. There is just so much that I love this time of year I wanted to bring it to the forefront for this week’s article.

whywelovefeatureblock image

For starters – the holiday season kicks off with a bang – or should I say, a gobble?

The annual Turkey Trot gets us moving before we dive into our Thanksgiving feasts. It’s the perfect way to build up an appetite and connect with neighbors before the big day. My daughters absolutely love this fun (and brisk event!)

But that’s just the appetizer. As November turns to December, Lassen County becomes i a winter wonderland of activities that would make even Santa’s elves jealous.

The highlight of our festive calendar has to be the Festival of Lights at the Lassen County Fairgrounds. This has long been an Avilla family tradition, and I know I am not alone in this.

From December 6th through the 25th, our community comes together to create a dazzling display that lights up the night. I can’t thank the fairgrounds enough for putting the wonder in my children’s eyes as they drive through this twinkling wonderland – it’s pure magic.

And speaking of magic, who could forget our cherished Christmas tree lighting ceremony? It’s a moment when time seems to stand still, and we all come together to watch our town square sparkle to life as we watch the Christmas parade and see the ever so iconic tree come to life at the top of town.

But the holidays aren’t just about lights and decorations. In our community-it’s about the spirit of giving, and boy, does our community have that in spades!

The sound of Salvation Army bells ringing outside Walmart from November to December is music to my ears. It’s heartwarming to see so many volunteers sign up to ring those bells, that too has become an Avilla family tradition.

From craft fairs showcasing local artisans to live nativity scenes that bring the Christmas story to life, there’s no shortage of ways to get into the holiday spirit. We’ve got photos with Santa for the little ones, holiday concerts for music lovers, and of course the amazing Christmas dance shoes put on my the local studios.

What makes all of these events truly special isn’t just the twinkling lights or the festive music—it’s the people. It’s seeing familiar faces bundled up against the cold, sharing smiles and warmer hugs. It’s the way our community comes together, from the smallest towns like Westwood and Doyle to Susanville itself, to celebrate the season.

In Lassen County, the holidays aren’t just a time of year-they’re a feeling. A feeling of belonging, of joy, and of home. It’s why we love this place, not just during the holidays, but all year round.

So bundle up, grab a cup of hot cocoa, and I hope to see you celebrating the most wonderful time of the year in the most wonderful place we know – our very own Lassen County.

Video: Honey Lake Hospice Holds Annual Memorial Ceremony and Tree Lighting

A SusanvilleStuff Video Feature

by Marshel and Jeremy Couso

Honey Lake Hospice held their annual Memorial Ceremony and Tree Lighting in the Fellowship Hall at the United Methodist Church on South Lassen Street Saturday evening. The ceremony offers a special opportunity to honor the memory of loved ones by having their names inscribed on a dove and placed on the Hospice Memorial Tree in front of the church.

The Memorial Ceremony began with a welcome from Andria Cuypers and Claudia Dunlavy.

Debra Sokol performed a touching rendition of the song I Will Light a Candle.

Kathy Barker read the names from the Angel Tree while Dennis Roberts and the United Methodist Church Hand Bell Choir performed the Tolling of the Bells.

The illuminated tree will shine brightly each night through the first day of the new year.

Newspaper Photo Reunites Family

with Doyle Man Missing Since 1999

A Doyle man, missing for more than two decades, was reunited with family this week thanks to a chance sighting in a USA Today newspaper photo and some tenacious detective work by a Lassen County Sheriff’s Deputy.

On November 22nd, according to details provided by LCSO Operations Division Commander Captain Mike Carney, the Sheriff’s Office received a call from a woman who said that she had some information on a previously reported missing person.

“The woman informed Sheriff’s Deputy Derek Kennemore, that she had been sent an article from USA Today that had a picture of a man that she believed to be her missing brother,” Carney said.

“The woman explained that her brother was reported missing in 1999 from Doyle, Ca. The man had not been heard from since. The USA Today article was printed in April 2024 and was requesting assistance in identifying the man, who had been admitted to a hospital in the Los Angeles, area.”

Deputy Kennemore contacted the hospital and was told that the man had been transferred to another hospital in the Los Angeles area in July of this year.

“The man was non-verbal and had never been identified. Deputy Kennemore contacted the second hospital who confirmed that they had a non-verbal, unidentified man in their care that matched the description of the missing person.”

Kennemore then contacted the Los Angeles Police Department, Missing Persons Unit, and was put in contact with a Detective who responded to the hospital and fingerprinted the man. The Detective was able to positively identify the man as the one reported missing in 1999 from Doyle.

“Deputy Kennemore recontacted the woman and informed her that, with the assistance of LAPD, we were able to positively identify the man as her brother. The family will be reunited soon.”

Names in this case have been withheld for family privacy.

Captain Carney and the LCSO commended Deputy Kennemore on his tenacity with this case.

“We would also like to thank the Los Angles Police Department for their assistance in identifying the missing man and closing out this 25 year old case.”

Help make Christmas special for the dogs and cats at the Lassen Animal Shelter and score some great LED Christmas Lights at the same time! Lassen Municipal Utility District is partnering with the Lassen Humane Society to collect items during their Pet Treats for Lights drive.

You can help LMUD help animals in need this year by donating new, unwrapped dog/cat toys, dry or wet cat food and dog food, pet dishes, durable chew toys, leashes, collars and pretty much anything dog or cat related.

LMUD can’t take rawhide chews, blankets, toys or beds with stuffing and heated blankets.

Pet Treats for Lights begins on Monday, December 2nd, and continues until LMUD’s supply of LED lights is exhausted. But if you are feeling especially generous, you can bring in pet supplies through the end of the year.

The first 200 customers who bring their pet into the LMUD office to help drop off their goodies, will receive a custom, LMUD pet bandana! If your pet is shy, just drop by with a photo of your furry friend and they will be happy to make sure they get a bandana.

For more information call LMUD at 1.530.257.4174 or visit www.lmud.org.

Susanville Has Parking Meters

November 27, 1956

It now costs to park in Susanville.

Susanville’s new parking meters, installed this week, have been viewed with mixed emotions by local residents.

Although meters were being used frquently on Main Street, usage in the two-hour parking meters is light.

And the Spalding Drug Store may be expressing something of a popular sentiment with its prominent floral display: A large floral tribute marked “In Memory of Free Parking.”

A total of 351 parking meters were installed on the downtown district this last week, 125 for one-hour parking and 226 for two hour.

Costing approximately $64 each, the meters will “pay for themselves” with half the collections going to the meter company, half to the city.

During the one-year trial on which they have been installed, the meters will be serviced by the police department, according to Chief of Police Fred D. Bradbury.
