North Street Electrical Fire

Damages Residence

An electrical fire in a residence on North Street Sunday morning caused damage to an attic and an electrical panel, along with water damage to the home’s interior according to a report from the Susanville Fire Department.

At around 1:10a.m., the fire department responded to 1005 North Street for the structure fire, arriving to find heavy smoke showing from the rear vents of a single-story house.

“Firefighters acted quickly to control the progress and extinguish the fire,” explains SFD Captain Andrew Jarrett. “The fire damage was contained to the attic and the breaker panel box on the front of the house.”

“The interior of the house sustained water damage caused by suppression efforts.”

Jarrett pointed to an overloaded electrical system as the fire’s cause.

“The Susanville Fire Department would like to thank Cal Fire, Lake Forest Fire Department, Susanville Police Department, Susanville Public Work, and LMUD for their quick response and assistance with the incident.”

The Hotel Mount Lassen in the early 1930’s from the Eastman Collection at UC Davis

Susanville Hotel Company Elects New President

November 30, 1925

At a meeting of the Board of Directors of Susanville Hotel Company, held last Saturday, J. E. Pardee was chosen to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of A. G. Breitwieser, and John B. Spalding was elected President of the Board to succeed Mr. Breitwieser.

The matter of a name for the hotel was taken up and discussed with Mr. Coffin, the lessee of the hotel rooms, and at his urgent request it was decided to call the new hostelry “Hotel Mount Lassen.”

Mr. Coffin insisted that name would be a great advertising asset to the house, and as he has leased the rooms for a ten-year term the Board reluctantly acceded to his request.

An offer of $25 for the suggestion of an appropriate name had been made some time ago, with the provision that neither “Susanville” nor “Lassen” should be used in the name and under that offer names had been suggested by many persons, and for that reason as well as many others the Board was reluctant to adopt the name desired by Mr. Coffin.

To show the good faith of the Board it was voted to donate $25 to the local Red Cross and $25 to the Ladies Relief Society of Susanville, in lieu of paying $25 to any person who had submitted a name.
