Why We Love This Place Wednesday:

A Lassen County Fall

By Terra Avilla

Ahh the brisk fall air. That time of year when it is freezing in the morning and by the afternoon the sun shining on your face warms you right up! This time of year in Susanville is just my favorite. My all-time favorite.

For this week, I couldn’t narrow down to just one thing. There are sooooo many things that make my heart happy and without further hesitation I will share some of them with you.

whywelovethisplace image

I know have written about Wemple’s Pumpkin Patch before, but this is the first time as a mom, I have gotten to go on an actual Wemple’s Pumpkin Patch field trip and there’s just something about seeing it through this paradigm that warms my heart.

The kids were so happy to learn about the difference between a squash and gourd. It was almost comical.

To be fair the field trip wasn’t the only time I went to patch this fall. My husband and I also braved the patch with an onslaught of baseball boys, many of whom had never been to a pumpkin patch before and another handful of boys who had never had a Carmel apple before.

They were pleasantly surprised to say the least.

Another favorite activity of mine this year is the annual Dancing for a Brand New Me. It’s just something that makes me love this time of year.

Not only did I get to see my wonderful friend Kassie constantly, but I was also lucky enough this year to host the event with my all-time hero, Jeremy Couso. And let me tell you… despite how easy he makes it look… it is difficult.

Nonetheless, it is an event that brings our community together and is synonymous with a Lassen County Fall.

Lastly, what would be an October in Lassen County if we didn’t mention the ever-iconic Uptown Trick or Treat? The time of the year when all our little ghouls and goblins gather for box car races, candy, dancing, more candy and costume contests?

Every year it’s a whole lot of chaos but also feels a whole of like Lassen County. Seeing all the Uptown Businesses at their booths, Giggling over the great costumes. Catching up with friends. Going home with pounds and pounds of candy. All of it.

I just love it and I know many of you like me, believe that it is one of the many reasons I love where we live!

Santa’s Grand Entrance in the Magical Country Christmas parade

Be A Part of the Chamber’s Magical

Country Christmas Event

The holiday season is almost upon us and the Lassen County Chamber of Commerce, along with the City of Susanville, are preparing for their annual Magical Country Christmas Celebration which will be held on Saturday, December 2nd, in historic uptown starting at 4:00p.m. on Main Street, which will be closed to traffic for the event.

At 6:00p.m. the Magical Country Christmas parade will start, with floats, dancers and participants moving up Main Street to the tree in front of the Elk’s Lodge. The big finale of the parade will be the arrival of Santa, the lighting of the tree and fireworks!

There is still plenty of time if your group or organization would like to participate in the parade.

Holiday revelers at the uptown celebration will also get to enjoy live holiday music performances, a hot toddy walk and dancing.

Uptown businesses will be open late, and vendors will line the streets with food, beverages, and custom gifts to help with your Christmas shopping.

Toys for Tots will also be in uptown from 4:00p.m., until after the tree lighting, to collect new and unwrapped toys for local children.

The chamber’s yearly Christmas party has become tradition in Susanville, with nearly two thousand people expected to show up to help welcome Santa to town.

There will also be food, drink and plenty of hot chocolate and warm beverages to help warm you up.

The chamber is looking for sponsors for this year’s event. Sponsors will be recognized in advertising and on the event poster.

If you need more information, you can call the Lassen County Chamber at 257-4323.

Inundated with Leaves? Here’s

What You Can Do With Bagged Leaves

Too many leaves in your yard with nowhere to put them? Through December 4th, the City of Susanville Public Works Department’s annual leaf collection program offers a way for Susanville residents to rid themselves of the leaves for free.

Residents can drop off bagged leaves, tied securely, to the vacant lot on Skyline Road at Numa Road.

The area where you are to place your bags will be marked with tape and barricades.

The bags are not to weigh more than forty pounds and are to contain leaves only.

If you are handicapped or elderly please call 530-257-1041 to arrange for pickup of already bagged leaves.

This program is made possible for Susanville residents through donations by C&S Waste Systems and Lassen County Air Pollution.

7:30a.m. on Monday, October 30th

Photofeature: Susanville Solstice Celebration Gets Bigger Each Year

Nearly 100 people gathered in uptown last Monday morning to witness a uniquely Susanville event – the annual ‘Susanville Solstice’ where the sunrise perfectly aligns with Main Street from the Elks Lodge down to Mesa Street.

Diamond View School Principal Dede Heimbigner brought 8th grade students with her to see the alignment and even Miss Lassen County and her court made an appearance.

Susanville’s famous outdoor-adventure photographer Randy Robbins opened up his gallery on Main Street early and provided donuts, and warmth, for the folks who came out to see nature’s display.

At precisely 7:30a.m. the sun came up, followed by a flurry of picture taking – selfies, group shots, drone shots… all with sunrise and Susanville’s Main Street in the background.

It was a very cool event.

Isaac Knoch and family with their new, 1937 Cord sedan

Isaac Knoch Has First 1937 Cord Sold North of Los Angeles

November 8, 1936

Driving a beautiful new 1937 model Cord which he purchased at the San Francisco Auto Show, Mr. Isaac Knoch returned Wednesday from the bay city accompanied by Mr. Ducasse.

Mr. Knoch’s car, a sedan, is the first of the 1937 series to be sold in California, north of Los Angeles.

Finished in “baked clay” tomes, its color will not be duplicated, having been especially prepared for the automobile show.

Mr. Knoch reports the trip to San Francisco was an easy drive, and he had difficulty in keeping the speed, which is gauged in motor revolutions, down.
