Photofeature: CASA Program

Superhero 5K Fun Run

A SusanvilleStuff Photofeature

by Marshel and Jeremy Couso

Lassen Family Services’ CASA Program held a Superhero themed 5K fun run and one-mile walk October 5th, to help support programs for abused and neglected children in Lassen County.

It was a beautiful fall morning with walkers and runners dressed as their favorite superheroes making their way from Fruit Growers Park on Riverside Drive to the trail corridor along the Susan River.

lassenfamily5k image

Lots of local superheroes, sometimes whole families of superheroes, showed up to take part in the run.

We have more photos in our photofeature over at SusanvilleStuff.com. Click here to see them all.

The colorful 5K is not only fun, but it supports a great cause. CASA’s mission is to provide specially selected and trained community volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in Lassen County’s juvenile dependency system.

The group works as a non-profit program under the umbrella agency of Lassen Family Services, in collaboration with key agencies, legal counsel and community resources to ensure that each child’s best interests are protected.

2024 Lassen 4H Hall of Fame:

Inductee #4 Brandon Pratt

All week long on SusanvilleStuff, in celebration of National 4-H Week, we will be featuring this year’s four inductees into the Lassen County 4-H Hall of Fame.

By Paiton Hallmark, Russell Mallery, Samantha Medvin and Layton Allen. Interview and photographs provided by loving friends and family of Brandon Pratt.

Rounding out our inductees into the 2024 Lassen County Hall of Fame our fourth inductee is no stranger to most of you. In fact – we have never met anyone that isn’t a friend of Mr. Brandon Pratt.

4Hhalloffame image

Brandon has been known to serve Lassen County in many ways. He spent most of his career as a California Highway Patrol Officer right here in the Susanville Area. During that time he was the strongest advocate for keeping the 140 Squad Club going strong and making sure that they were available to serve the 4-H and FFA kids and families during the Lassen County Fair.

Brandon grew up here and has raised two beautiful daughters, Peyton and Avarie, in our community that both have been involved in the Lassen County 4-H Program.

Brandon also participated in Lassen Family Services Dancing for a Brand New Me which helps raise awareness about Domestic Violence and helps provide support for local domestic violence survivors.

When Brandon was a 4-H member he showed pigs. One fond memory his Mom, Dalene, shared was that when he used to sing the star spangled banner to his pigs. Each time Brandon would sing the pig would come lay down on his back for Brandon to scratch it’s belly.

She said the pig would normally just be going about his business but would do this every time Brandon started singing to it. He was learning it for school and took the time to practice while he was working with his animal project.

Another fond memory was that Brandon won second place once at the fair and thought he was done showing so he put his cane (show stick) away and came back to the ring to watch. His companions frantically found him and told him he had to “hurry up and come back in the ring!” Brandon did make his return to the ring but forgot his cane and nobody would give him one.

As if the pig agreed with Brandon and wanted to leave the animal ran straight towards the judge and gave him a ride around the ring on his back. Needless to say Brandon has always been a comical character!

Brandon, without all the years you’ve contributed to Lassen County, we are not sure what our fair weeks would have been like. Your devotion to your community has not gone unnoticed.

It’s an honor, Mr. Pratt, to induct you as our final member into the Lassen County

4-H Hall of Fame Class of 2024.

Lassen County 4H Ambassadors’ Corner: October Edition

By Paiton Hallmark, Layton Allen,

Samantha Medvin and Russell Mallery

In September, the Lassen County 4-H Ambassadors attended all eight of our 4-H clubs’ monthly meetings. Thank you, Thompson Peak, Lake, South County, Milford, Dyer Mountain, Standish, Richmond and Johnstonville 4-H clubs for allowing us to come talk to you about Achievement Night and invite you to participate in the camp banner contest!

As a team we have made it a priority to host monthly dinners throughout our year to bond as a team. While we might drive our parents a little crazy it has been a lot of fun and we are learning a lot about ourselves and how to help each other.

On Sunday October 6th we held Achievement Night at Sentimental Journey ranch in Janesville. Our theme for the evening was Plaidpalooza. In total we had more than 130 guests including members, their families, and our inductees into the Lassen County 4-H Hall of Fame.

We would like to thank our sponsors for their food and monetary donations to 2024 Achievement Night: Susanville Supermarket, Susanville Safeway, Susanville Grocery Outlet, Alpine Beverage, Morning Glory Dairy and Jason Ingram.

One of the requirements to be an Ambassador is to complete a project that improves your local 4-H Program. We had been keeping our project a secret for months and finally got to unveil it at Achievement Night. We will be hosting Lassen County 4-H Camp April 13th-15th. We are working on making this camp available to all youth in our county, not just current 4-H members!

Our plan is to allow ages 5-8 for the morning sessions and ages 9 and up for the entire day. We have massive things in the works and look forward to sharing updates with you here! Help us “Inspire Tomorrow!” and mark the date on your calendar if you have kids between the ages of 5 and 19.

If you did not see the biographies for our Class of 2024 Hall of Fame inductees, make sure to check them out – we are so honored to provide this unique award experience.

Thanks Lassen County – see you in November!

Annual LFS Wreath Laying Ceremony to be Held This Morning at 10:00

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and Lassen Family Services, the sole provider of abuse focused prevention, intervention treatment and victim support services in Lassen County, will hold a special wreath laying ceremony on the morning of October 11th to honor the memory of Deputy Larry Griffith, Officer Robert McElrath, Deputy Jack Hopkins and all law enforcement personnel who put their lives on the line to protect victims of crime and their commitment to ending domestic violence in our community.

Again this year the annual ceremony will be held at the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office on Sheriff Cady Lane beginning at 10:00a.m., and the public is welcome to attend.

The Honor Guard will present the colors and refreshments will be served following the ceremony.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Several events are held by the organization during the month of October including the annual Dancing for a Brand New Me fundraiser. Purple ribbons were displayed at local businesses and community agencies to commemorate, acknowledge and bring awareness to the problem of domestic violence.

Lassen Family Services is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1979 and relying completely on federal, state, and foundation grants and public donations to provide a lengthy list of free services to the community; domestic violence and sexual assault rape crisis counseling/intervention, emergency shelter and transitional housing, 24-Hour Crisis Line, sexual assault response team, Court Appointed Special Advocates program, Child Abuse Treatment program, legal assistance/court advocacy, parent education, prevention education, law enforcement and hospital accompaniment, emergency food and clothing, emergency and non-emergency transportation and community referrals.

Fire Department Offering Fire Truck Rides and Fun at Saturday’s Open House

It’s time for Fire Truck Rides! October is National Fire Prevention Month and the Susanville Fire Department is inviting everyone to stop by for their fun-filled, family-oriented annual Open House at the Fire hall on Main Street tomorrow, October 12th.

The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Month is, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” and the folks at the Susanville Fire Department will be helping to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

openhouseblock image

The free, fun, family-oriented event will give everyone a chance to meet our local firefighters with hands-on activities, fire engine rides, equipment displays, the fire safety trailer and food and refreshments.

Did you know?

Working smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a home fire, giving people the time to get out safely.

The SFD offers these key smoke alarm safety tips and guidelines:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
  • Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out.

Plan ahead for your escape. Make your home escape plan and practice today. Follow this link to the National Fire Prevention Week website for more information about creating home escape plan.

The event, which runs from 10:00a.m. until 2:00p.m., will feature demonstrations, tours, fire engine rides, prizes and giveaways.

Lassen Youths Sign Up for Army

October 11, 1940

Many Susanville youths are deserting the plains and ranges for voluntary military service in the army and marine corps, according to Chief of Police W. O. Long.

Long has been called upon with the past few days to investigate the records of a number of volunteers who offered their services before draft by registration.

Leaving Susanville Tuesday were, Marvin Samuel Sherman, 1433 Prospect Avenue; Ralph Fred McCallister of Milford and Chesley Hillman DeForest of 1214 Pardee Avenue, all cowboys of Susanville.

A day or so before that Long investigated several whose names he did not recall. Of this group one was a “cowpuncher” of the Ravendale district. It is estimated some 50 young men from here have volunteered in the past month.
