Why We Love This Place Wednesday:

Briseis Myers

By Terra Avilla

Having children creates a different level of anxiety. Aside from concerns about their well-being, their growth rates, their reading level, their diet, their education, one of the most important things I worry about is my child being a nice human being. Being a kind, thoughtful person. Being a child that adults want their own kids to be around.

I want my child to be the kid in the class that when they go over to a play date, the other parent isn’t counting the minutes until they get picked up. Today, I write about one of the youngest features my article has ever showcased, little ten-year-old Briseis Myers.

The fact that “Brie” is so wonderful is really no surprise as she is the daughter of my two personal heroes Christi and Leon Myers. I met Briseis of course, through her parents many years ago. The blessing of living in such a close-knit community is being the opportunity to watch her grow.

In the time I have known this little superstar, I have seen her be a soccer star. This past spring, I was able to watch her front and center in her starring role in best of Broadway. She was striking and wonderful. I felt so proud of her, and she isn’t even my own daughter.

Despite being so young Little Miss Brie is incredibly multi-dimensional. Not only does know how to dance and sing, but she is also on our local swim team and is absolutely a little athlete. Swimming is no easy feat, but she makes it look like a walk in the park.

More impressively, aside from her athleticism, and after school activities, Brie is who I want my daughter to look up to. Brie is who I look up to. Brie is kind, and inclusive. Brie is thoughtful and sweet. When in a group of children, Brie is the child who makes sure that every kid feels welcome.

Brie is the kid you hope and pray will find your kid when your kid is struggling.

I have no doubt that if anyone, no matter their age, needed a friend, Brie would be that person. I can attest to this from first-hand knowledge.

Due to the demands of Holiday with a Hero, Peach and Brie often end up running around while their parents try and fundraise, are having a board meeting, are shopping for gifts, or like last year spent days and days, bagging and tagging and organizing gifts. During this time, Brie, who is two years older than my little Anna, does nothing but make Peach feel included.

Peach idolizes Brie, and I’m sure having a second-grader tag around you all the time gets tiresome, but Brie is so patient and kind with her.

At the golf tournament, poor Brie (who by the way WANTED to come help us volunteer) was inundated not only by Peach, but by Pearl and my baby. She was so kind (and mature beyond her years) that I couldn’t help but smile.

This beautiful little gem, helping take care of my children as she is invested in helping her parents and I with mundane tasks, to help other children in the county. It was selfless. It was beautiful. It was one of the many examples of why I love her and why she is one of the reasons I love where we live. (And I cannot wait to see her grow!)

BLM Offering Fall Color Ride

on the Bizz This Saturday

The Bureau of Land Management invites mountain bike riders and hikers to come outdoors and enjoy the beautiful fall colors peaking on the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail, when the Bureau of Land Management and Lassen Rural Bus offer a special shuttle service this Saturday, October 22nd, between Susanville and Westwood.

Participants should call the BLM at 530-257-0456 to reserve shuttle space to the Mason Station Trailhead (3.5 miles north of Westwood) for themselves and for hauling bicycles on the trailer.

There are separate $3 fees for the bus (paid to Lassen Rural Bus) and the bike shuttle (paid to the BLM), so one participant with one bicycle should expect to pay $6.00 total to use both services. Exact change is appreciated.

Riders and walkers should meet at 8:00a.m. at the historic Susanville Railroad Depot, 601 Richmond Road. The bus and bike shuttle will depart at 8:30a.m., and stop at the Devil’s Corral Trailhead, where participants can ride or walk seven miles back to Susanville.

The trail surface is gravel so wide tired bicycles are recommended. Hybrid and gravel grinder bikes are also used on the trail. Even children on wide tired single speed kids’ bikes have ridden the entire trail because it is mostly flat or downhill. The eastern seven miles from Devil’s Corral to Susanville is ideal for families with kids.

Fall along the Susan River and the Bizz Johnson Trail

Additional trail options provided by the Lassen Rural Bus service:

Continue west over Fredonyer Pass – bike riders can depart and follow six miles of Forest Service Roads to Goumaz, mid point on the Bizz Johnson Trail, and then ride 12 miles downhill (18 miles total ride to Susanville).

Continue to Westwood and then 3.3 miles north to Mason Station Trailhead – enjoy riding the full length of the Bizz Johnson Trail; follow an old logging railroad through dry east side pine stands for 10 miles then follow the Susan River for 15 miles, crossing the river 11 times on 100+ year old railroad bridges and pass through two railroad tunnels (25 miles back to Susanville).

Another option is the South Side Trail. A very scenic single-track trail, it parallels the Bizz Johnson Trail in the lower (eastern) seven miles of the Susan River Canyon between the Devil’s Corral Trailhead and Susanville.

This trail is popular with skilled mountain bike riders, hikers, runners and horseback riders. Connections between South Side Trail and the Bizz Johnson Trail are available on both ends of South Side Trail and at two places in between providing options for out and back loops of four, five, and eight miles.

For more information and to reserve space on the bus and the bike shuttle’s trailer, contact the BLM Eagle Lake Field Office at 530-257-0456.

Students Paint Schools Emblem

October 19, 1948

The big L on Antelope Mountain, about three miles from town was whitewashed by the freshman class of the Lassen Union High School last Tuesday. The L is formed by hundreds of closely packed stones.

Combining picnic pleasure with painting, freshman boys went out to start the chore early in the morning, and the girls of the class joined them at 11 a.m. and stayed until 2:30 p.m.

Class advisors, Miss Naomi Giddings and Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Nielson, assisted by Assistant Principal, M. R. Arnold, were with the freshmen. This is the first time the L had been repainted in four years.
