Sheriff’s Office Eradicates Over 34,000 Illegal Cannabis Plants in Coordinated Operation

A massive, two-day law enforcement operation led by the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office resulted in the eradication of 34,166 illegal cannabis plants and the seizure of over 12,000 pounds of processed marijuana with an estimated street value exceeding $10 million. The coordinated effort, which spanned the Ravendale, Madeline, and Susanville areas, also led to 14 arrests.

The operation, which took place on September 23rd and 24th, targeted illegal cultivation sites initially identified through intelligence developed by the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office.

That initial investigation led authorities to identify twelve properties in Lassen County allegedly involved in illicit cannabis cultivation operated by illegal immigrants.

Working alongside the Bureau of Land Management, investigators secured and executed a series of search warrants. In total, 11 warrants were executed in the Ravendale and Madeline areas, with one additional warrant executed within the City of Susanville.

Three new properties were identified during the Ravendale operations, leading to further warrants being obtained.

Significant Seizures and Arrests

The joint enforcement actions produced significant results beyond the plant eradication:

  • 12,310 pounds of processed marijuana were seized.
  • 14 arrests were made, and 11 additional individuals were contacted and identified.
  • 7 firearms were seized.
  • 2 vehicles were seized.

The wide-ranging operation involved a large task force, including personnel from the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office, Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, Susanville Police Department, Lassen County Code Enforcement, Public Works, and Environmental Health, the Bureau of Land Management, and the California Department of Justice’s Eradication and Prevention of Illicit Cannabis team.

Lassen County Sheriff John McGarva emphasized the importance of the operation for the community and the environment.

“This investigation highlights the continued priority of addressing illegal cannabis operations in both Modoc and Lassen Counties,” said McGarva. “These efforts are essential for protecting public safety, upholding state and local laws, and preventing the environmental damage associated with unregulated cultivation. We thank all partner agencies for their collaboration and dedication, which were key to the successful execution of this operation.”

The Sheriff’s Office affirmed that addressing illegal cannabis operations remains a top priority for protecting public safety and maintaining the integrity of state and local laws.

LMUD Schedules Public Hearing

on Proposed Electric Rate Adjustment

Lassen Municipal Utility District has announced a Public Hearing to consider proposed adjustments to its electric rates. The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, October 28th, at 5:30p.m. in the LMUD Board Room at 65 S. Roop Street.

This public meeting is a crucial step required by California law before any rate changes can be enacted, providing a venue for ratepayers to review, question, and comment on the proposal.

The Rate Adjustment Proposal

lmudupdate image

The proposed adjustments are detailed in a formal document known as a 14401 Report, named after the relevant section of the California Public Utilities Code. This report, a written recommendation from LMUD’s General Manager, outlines the adjustments, the financial rationale, and how they support the district’s long-term goals for reliability, affordability and infrastructure investment.

“As a publicly owned utility governed by the California Municipal Utility District Act, LMUD operates within a unique framework that prioritizes transparency, local control, and community benefits,” explains LMUD Public Relations Manager Theresa Phillips.

“Unlike investor-owned utilities, LMUD’s rates are not set by the California Public Utilities Commission. Instead, the LMUD Board of Directors, elected by local ratepayers, has the authority to establish rates, fees, and charges for electric service.”

Local Control and Transparency

Phillips emphasized the importance of public participation. “The upcoming hearing is your opportunity to learn more about the proposal, ask questions, and share your thoughts directly with the Board. Your input helps ensure that LMUD’s decisions reflect the values and priorities of the community we serve.”

Ratepayers interested in reviewing the detailed proposal, including the 14401 report, and the official hearing announcement can do so by visiting the Public Notices page on the LMUD website.

Susanville Council Declines to Buy Elks Lodge

October 2, 1967

The City Council last night said no to a proposal from spokesmen for Elks Lodge No. 1487 that the city purchase the historic Elks Lodge Building for $40,000.

The building, a stately old two-story mansion which sits at the head of Main Street and overlooks the city, is one of the first things tourists notice as they drive into Susanville.

Mayor Dale Soule said the city has been approached by the Elks Club to purchase the building.

Unable To Raise Funds

Following a discussion of the offer, the council agreed it would be unfortunate if the landmark was demolished, but indicated the city would be unable to raise funds to purchase the structure.

City Councilman Jim McKahan suggested that if civic organizations in the city wished to raise the necessary funds to purchase the building and bring it up to meet building code standards, the city would consider taking the facility as a gift.

“I don’t like the idea of seeing it torn down,” McKahan said.

“A lot of people would hate to see it torn down,” Councilman Charles Richardson agreed.

Three Factions

Councilman Ivor Lanigar, who also serves as secretary of the Elks, said the “big problem” with the Elks here is that the lodge’s 500 members are divided into three factions.

One faction, Lanigar explained, wants to remodel the old structure, which already has a modern meeting room on the rear of the lot.

Another faction, he said, wants to demolish the two-story house in front of the modern meeting room and build a modern front.

Still another faction, he said, wants to move to a new site altogether and build a completely new lodge.
