Adopt A Pet from the Lassen

County Animal Shelter – Spider

Miss Spider is sweet, spunky, and full of lots of playful energy.

This girl doesn’t seem phased by the shelter dogs passing back and forth in front of her kennel, so a home with dogs could be a possibility. What staff is certain of is that Spider loves attention and can’t wait to have a family of her own to play with and space to zoom about.

Spider is about a year old and will be spayed on Wednesday, Nov. 2nd. She will also be brought up to date on her vaccinations and leukemia tested.

NWS Bulletin: Winter Storm

Watch in Effect Starting This Evening

Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno are warning area residents to expect winter conditions, with heavy snow possible above 5,500 feet, beginning late this evening.

Above 5,500 feet, total snow accumulations 3 to 5 inches are in the forecast, with 5 to 12 inches above 7,000 feet possible.

Here in the Honey Lake Valley, we should prepare for west to southwest winds at 45 to 50mph, except along the ridges where wind gusts may reach up to 100mph.

lassenedcsponsorblock image

From late tonight through Wednesday afternoon plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commutes.

Strong winds may result in tree damage and may create subzero wind chills along the foothills and ridgelines of the Sierra.

Now is the time to prepare an emergency kit for your home and car. If traveling consider alternate plans, remember to carry tire chains, extra food, water and clothing. Once the storm arrives, travel may be difficult or impossible for an extended period of time.

Then its going to get cold

The cold airmass will likely usher in the season’s coldest temperatures thus far. High temperatures will plummet some 15-20 degrees below average on Wednesday and Thursday – struggling to get out of the 30s in the Sierra valleys and 40s across western Nevada.

With northerly breezes still in place, it will feel brisk out, even during the afternoon hours.

Hard freezes are likely, particularly Thursday and Friday mornings as skies clear. Now is the time to complete winter protections for exposed irrigation equipment if you have not done so already.

Susanville Police Department

Emphasizing Trick or Treat Safety

The Susanville Police Department is reminding the community that while the Historic Uptown Susanville Association’s Annual Safe and Sane Halloween celebration is going on from 3:30 to 5:30, Main Street will be closed from Cottage Street to Weatherlow Street.

They ask that you please follow posted detours for the Main Street closure while the event is underway.

“On Halloween the Susanville Police Department encourages everyone on the road to be extra careful as more children are out walking the neighborhood haunting for treats,” explains Police Chief Ryan Cochran.

policehalloween-300x300 image

“In an effort to keep trick-or-treaters and others in the Halloween spirit safe, The Susanville Police Department will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.”

The Susanville Police Department offers the following tips for families to be as safe as possible and share the road safely:

Drivers

• Slow down and watch out for more foot traffic in residential neighborhoods.

• Take extra time looking for trick-or-treaters at intersections and entering/exiting driveways.

• Never drive distracted or impaired.

• If you are heading to a local bar, restaurant or house party and plan to drink, bring the designated sober driver with you.

Parents and trick-or-treaters

• Make sure costumes fit to prevent trips and falls.

• Decorate costumes and bags/buckets with reflective tape.

• Have kids use flashlights or glow sticks to make it easier for drivers to see them.

• Walk on sidewalks, when available. Avoid darting into the street or crossing between parked cars.

• Stick to familiar, well-lit routes.

• Look both ways before crossing the street. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Large Amounts of Material is Being Assembled at Susanville

October 31, 1913

Susanville will be a division point. This has been settled beyond cavil by the commencement of a seven stall round house like the one at Colfax. Not only will this be built as soon as possible but a 6,000 barrel oil tank will be put up for the fueling of locomotives.

One of the most interesting things to be seen along the right of way in the neighborhood of town is the vast amount of material accumulated for the building of the road in advance.

Not only is this an assurance that the road will be pushed on to completion as soon as possible, but it is confidently asserted by those in a position to know that 50 miles of new road have been ordered built. There have been several surveying parties working in advance of the end of the road for several months and this is what they have been doing.

Strength is given to this rumor by the fact that the Utah Construction company is said to be buying large quantities of supplies for use in the spring. That they did not come here for one year’s work is certified by the character of the plant placed here and by the fact that they are not preparing to leave here now that the present contract is practically completed.

Enough ties are piled up in the yard to build several miles of road and the manner of piling them shows that they are expected to stay where they are for some time. There are also vast quantities of bridge and other railroad building material in the yard.

The round house is only a straw which shows the direction of the wind and it is a safe wager that the road will be pushed on into the Oregon country as rapidly as possible.

That the building of the road will mean much to Susanville is already proven and when a railroad population is added to the present one this will be a very busy little city.
