Arts Council Offering Sugar Skull Creation Classes This Month
The Lassen Arts Council is offering a series of Sugar Skull classes taught by the talented Ana Rivera. These hands-on workshops will guide participants through the process of creating their own unique and beautiful sugar skulls.
Sugar skulls are a beloved tradition associated with the Day of the Dead in Mexico. These colorful and intricate skulls, decorated with vibrant hues and embellishments, serve as both gifts and offerings.
Originally created as treats for children, sugar skulls have evolved to hold deeper significance. They are now often placed on ofrendas, altars dedicated to departed loved ones, as a symbolic gesture of remembrance.

|
Through their vibrant colors, intricate designs, and symbolic meaning, sugar skulls continue to be a cherished part of the Day of the Dead celebrations, connecting families and honoring their ancestors.

Susanville Police Department Raising Pedestrian Safety Awareness
October is National Pedestrian Safety Month, and the Susanville Police Department is reminding drivers to slow down and be alert for people walking on Susanville streets.
By always taking extra precautions, you can help protect pedestrians and reduce the risk of crashes and injuries. Walking should always be an easy and safe option for getting around any community.
| |
|
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 7,522 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes across the United States in 2022. In California alone, 1,158 pedestrian were struck and killed on California roads in 2022, accounting for 26 percent of all traffic-related fatalities in the state. The high number of pedestrians injured and killed on our roads highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and safety measures for people walking.
The Susanville Police Department offers safe driving and walking tips, including staying off the phone when behind the wheel or walking.
Drivers
- Do not speed, and slow down at intersections. Be prepared to stop for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
- Avoid blocking crosswalks while waiting to make a right-hand turn.
- Never drive impaired.
Pedestrians
- Be predictable. Use signalized crosswalks where drivers may anticipate foot traffic.
- Watch for approaching vehicles and practice due care crossing the street. At 30 mph, a driver needs at least 90 feet to stop.
- Make it easier for drivers to see you at night – consider wearing bright colors, reflective material, or use a flashlight when practical.
- Be careful crossing streets or entering crosswalks at night or on busier streets with higher speed limits.

Potatoes Stolen in Field
October 7, 1940
Authorities here are cooperating with Merle Baker and some 25 Boy Scouts of Troop No 58, under his leadership, in a search for a Lassen County potato thief.
The boys planted early in the summer a half-acre to potatoes on the Frank Bangham ranch, three miles from Susanville.
They expected to harvest about 35 sacks from the sale of which they planned to buy uniforms for several poor boys and put the rest into equipment.
When Baker and his Scouts went to harvest the crop early this week, they were able to gather only 4 ½ sacks from a few scattered hills, overlooked by the thieves.
